Whitefish and Flathead Lakes are the largest natural freshwater lakes west of the Mississippi encompassing over 3,300 acres. Lake cruises, sailing, sea kayaking and a variety of rental boats are available. The waters are abundant with native Cuttroat, Rainbow Trout, Bull Trout, Whitefish, Pike, and Kokanee Salmon. Fishing Licenses are required and fly fishing lessons can be arranged. Charter boat fishing for one to five people for full or half day trips are also available, including gear. Or, you could spend the day relaxing on one of the public beaches and enjoying a swim in the crystal clear water.
Hiking. Find yourself surrounded by nature, enjoying a hearty lunch amidst awe-inspiring vistas. Learn about the natural history, human influences and wildlife as you traverse the "Crown of the Continent." Day hikes, hike and horseback or overnight guided treks of up to five nights ending the day next to a campfire and a delightful meal are available.
Cycling: Mountain Biking and road touring are popular activities for locals and visitors alike. Big Mountain's Bike Academy offers more than 20 miles of single-track trails and lift access for bikes.
Whitewater Rafting. The most invigorating way to explore the Middle Fork of the Flathead River along the southern border of the Park. Your guide swiftly maneuvers the raft through Class II and Class III rapids. Departures include half-day, full day with lunch or an evening riverside BBQ cookout. Great full day combinations, such as half-day horseback riding with a half-day of whitewater rafting, or a half-day of guided hiking in Glacier National Park then half-day of whitewater rafting. Multi-overnight combinations are also available.
Horseback Riding. Celebrate the wonders of nature by horseback. The high country rides explore the trails of Glacier National Park, the Bob Marshall Wilderness and the Flathead National Forest. Boat Cruises. Narrated boat cruises are available in the Park on Lake McDonald, St. Mary and in Many Glacier on the Swiftcurrent and Josephine Lakes. If you're early, join a special cruise for hikers to Grinnell Glacier with a Ranger-Naturalist leading the way. On Flathead Lake enjoy a Brunch Cruise, wine and cheese on a sailing sloop or tour the shoreline around Wild Horse Island. Rent ski boats, jetskis or pontoon boats for a day on your own.
Chuckwagon Dinner Ride getaways for a taste of the Old West and an evening of family fun. An all-you-can-eat western BBQ is served up in a backwoods tent camp while you're entertained by some knee-slapping music, tales of the pioneers and the valley history. Another choice is a ranch house BBQ with a live western music show.
Indian Reservation Tours. The Blackfeet, Plains, Salish, Kootenai and Pend d'Orielle Native American Indians share Reservation perspective of the the area's original peoples. See the picturesque St. Ignatius Catholic Mission and the National Bison Range. Follow the power politics behind the Kerr Dam and visit the preserved buffalo jump sites, the tipi rings, trading posts, museums, sacred sites, old Agency and the Blackfeet Indian Ranch. Visit the Bob Scriver and the John Clark Memorial Art Museums. Both Reservations offer half-day and full-day tours by appointment only.
Kayaking. Capture the beauty of Flathead Lake by sea kayak and explore the many islands and its wildlife. The motion of paddling is gentle, comfortable and very stable in the long sleek frame. Feast on a Sunday Brunch in a secluded cove or a full moon special departure with a moolit meal. Inflatable and hard shell whitewater kayaks are available on guided trips or rentals on your own.
