Ok, who would travel from the east coast to Kalispel, Montana to check out golf courses? The east coast is home to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Pinehurst, North Carolina and the whole golfing state of Florida. That's just the short list of golfing destinations on the east coast. I have visited most of them so when the invitation came I thought, why not. Golf Guide is looking for the unknown golf destination and this one wasn't known to me.

Whitefish, Montana is probably better known for fishing, hunting, and skiing. And rightly so as they have earned that reputation. Yet I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and conditions of the golf courses in the area. But, they had something I considered even more attractive. A friendly and accomodating attitude that I have yet to experience anywhere else. Yes, even in the pro shops, where at other courses I've felt as if I they were doing me a favor by allowing me to pay a hundred or more dollars to play a five hour round of golf, these professionals were actually happy to see you, greeted you with a smile and warm welcome, and had a few minutes to ask where you're from and answer a few questions about the golf course. Whats the area like in general? Whitefish is located about 24 miles west of Glacier National Park and was originally founded as a timber and farming town. The railroad played a major role in the early growth of Whitefish in 1891 when the Great Northern Railway entered the valley and again in 1900 when a more northerly route was established at the foot of Whitefish Lake. For the next fifty years it was timber and farming that created a strong economy for the area. The timber and farming slowly gave way to recreation and retirement communities.

Whitefish and the Kalispel area are now known for fishing, swimming, boating, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, mountain biking, skiing , ice skating, dogsledding, golf and more. The nitelife offers everything from rock and roll to theater, Keno, Poker, live horse and dog races, music festivals, chuckwagon dinners, and star gazing on Big Mountain. If you can't find something to do here, check your pulse, you're probably dead!
