The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Birmingham: Some of the Best Golf in the State

Birmingham Alabama has a lot of options for golfers, both residents, and visitors. There are nearly 40 public, private and municipal courses within a 20-mile radius of downtown Birmingham, including the infamous Shoal Creek Club, designed by Jack Nicklaus which has hosted a couple of PGA Championships, as well as several courses accessible to the public. Arguably, none are as fine as Ross Bridge and the two championship courses at Oxmoor Valley.

Ross Bridge and Oxmoor Valley are part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, the largest golf course construction project ever attempted. The trail was the brainchild of Dr. David Bronner, CEO of the Retirement Systems of Alabama whose “build it and they will come” mentality paid off.

The RTJ Golf Trail consists of 469 holes of championship golf on 26 golf courses at 11 sites across the state of Alabama. Some sites have multiple 18-hole layouts, others offer several 9-hole courses. Some are executive-length courses, some will make the best golfers in the world cringe. Some are affiliated with neighboring hotels, some are stand-alone. But one thing they all have in common is that they were designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr and use the natural topography of the land. Whether you’re playing one of the many championship layouts or a “short course,” all are immaculately maintained!

Over the years I have had the opportunity to play several of the RTJ Trail courses and ultimately my goal is to play them all. Ross Bridge is my favorite and has been for many years. From the back (Black) tees, Ross Bridge plays 8,191 yards and is one of the longest golf courses in the world; thankfully there is more than one set of tees. In fact, there are 5 sets of tees offering several manageable distances: Purple (7,446), Orange (6,783), White (6,200), and Teal (5,312). It was cart path only the day we played so we opted for White, not that perfect weather would have made any difference!

The first two holes can either make your day or have you looking for the beverage cart early in the round. Ross Bridge starts you off with one of my favorite holes. The Par 5, 1st hole plays 511 yards and is handicapped #3 for men and #1 for women. The large pond that comes into play on your layup and approach shots creates somewhat of a double dogleg and makes you choose between carrying your layup shot over the water or laying up short of it. Either way, you’re looking at an uphill/blind approach shot into an elevated green guarded in front by two large, cavernous bunkers.

After your uphill climb from the first green to the second tee box, you’ll be happy to know that the 2nd hole is significantly downhill and, from the White tees, Number 2 plays a mere 322 yards. It’s a dogleg left with trees and sand at the corner of the dogleg that can be carried with a good drive. Most players opt for something less than a driver off the tee and play their shot slightly right of the left-hand fairway bunker. It’s a safe strategy unless you hit it too far and go through the fairway. Success off the tee will leave a short pitch into one of Ross Bridge’s smallest greens guarded on the right by sand and left and long by that pond you dealt with on the first hole. Pars or better on both of these holes will have your day off to a great start.

I found The Ridge Course at Oxmoor Valley to be a lot more of a challenge than Ross Bridge, mainly because all of the greens were extremely elevated. The starter told us that if your range finder tells you to hit a 7-iron, it’s probably a good idea to hit a 6! After my approach shot into the first green came up a little short, I too was a believer!

Oxmoor Valley offers 54 holes of golf with two championship courses (Ridge and Valley) and a Short Course. It’s built on mining land that was once owned by U.S. Steel and the holes are sculpted from the peaks and valleys that make up the Appalachian Mountains. As you play your way around the courses, you’ll encounter over 200 feet of elevation changes, scenic forests, and several creeks that you may or may not know are there.

The Ridge Course features roller coaster-like fairways, lots of tree-lined holes, elevated greens, and over 200 feet of elevation changes. Uneven lies are the norm out here. It’s one of the most photographed courses on the entire RTJ Trail and boasts some of the most thrilling par 5s in the state.  Case in point, the Par 5 3rd hole, which is considered by many to be the course’s signature hole. It’s the second of back-to-back par 5s, and it’s best to put the last hole out of your mind before teeing off! Number 3 plays 506 yards from the White Tees and is handicapped the hardest hole on the outward side. There’s water between the tee and green but it probably won’t come into play until your second shot. Tee off from an elevated tee box and favor the right side of the fairway. Do the same thing with your layup shot but by all means, keep it in the fairway. That will leave an uphill approach shot into a green with an outcropping of rock. Be warned that the green is not as deep as it looks.

Eighteen is an impressive par 5 and is ranked the hardest hole on the golf course. At 543 yards from the White tees, not many players will reach it in two. If they do, they should probably have been playing from the longer tees! Your aiming point is the chimney on the clubhouse. As is often the case on the Ridge course, there are steep drop-offs from the edge of the fairway. Playing your layup shot right of the 150-yard marker will give the best angle into the green which is protected front and right by bunkers.

Gimme the Money—A Golf Fan’s Rant

The LIV Golf Invitational Series (“Golf, But Louder”) paid for by Saudi Arabian oil money may be several things but most obviously it is not about growing golf’s participation around the world nor creating playing opportunities for world class players. That was the rationale pushed hard by those fronting for this competitor to the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.

Need convincing?

Look at what the management, i.e., Greg Norman, has done, not said, but done. Norman initially spoke of how the new tour wanted to work with the established professional tours and most emphatically not be a competitor. In reality that is not the case; the LIV Golf Invitational Series is not only a competitor but definitely not cooperating with the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.

The crux of Norman’s pitch was the new tour would create additional playing opportunities for elite players but at the same time did not acknowledge neither of the established circuits would allow their members to play in competing events. Either Norman and company thought we weren’t listening or were so gullible we wouldn’t see through the hyperbole and is another case of fans around the world being shortchanged.

Justification from those playing LIV Golf are rationalizations, misstatements, and innuendo over what they say are issues with the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. It’s not they weren’t making an extremely good return on their golfing talents but that they want more. In itself this isn’t wrong however most adults have figured out when decisions are made solely for the lure of money things almost never work out.

What no one seems to emphasize is the PGA Tour provided the opportunity for the defectors headed by Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Pat Perez, Louis Oosthuizen, Patrick Reed and Sergio Garcia a place to play against the best in the world and develop their games. Along the way this group of seven made over $340 million in prize money and that does not include off course revenue from sponsorships and endorsements.

This cannot end happily. The most galling part of this situation is some of the professionals choosing to leave the PGA Tour, indeed favorites of this writer, won’t admit it’s a simple case of “Gimme the money.” They skate around what LIV Golf is about deflecting attention from the human rights record of a misogynistic regime that happens to hold control over a significant portion of the world’s oil not to mention having probable links to terrorists such as those perpetrating the 9/11 massacre.

Seeking other opinions, I talked with a veteran woman player who’s thinking surely reflects many others. “Why can’t these players go after the money? Everyone can try to find a new job that pays better. The Saudis faults and treatment of women are not on the players’ minds just the fact they can play a lot less and earn a lot more. After all its just golf.”

Certainly “it’s just golf” is a point of view but it ignores the reason the Saudi’s are putting up such immense sums with no hope of making a profit hoping to make us forget the truth. Backing Hall Fame member Greg Norman’s 30-year vendetta against the PGA Tour evidentially seemed like a good way to accomplish their “sportswashing,” a practice going back to at least to Germany’s sponsoring the 1936 Olympic Games.

Another long-time amateur player told me, “The money is doing the talking and until those guys realize that reputations are more long-lasting that’s the way it will be.” In other words, it’s their legacy versus life-altering sums of money.

The LIV Golf titles mean nothing. The season is only eight 54-hole events and fields are limited to 48 players with a no-cut format and a mixture of individual and team scoring where everyone gets paid.

A glorified series of exhibitions would best describe it though they can boast some ranked players who have the task of carrying the rest of the mediocre field. Is that something to stir the interest and emotions of golf fans? Not likely.

Prize money is guaranteed and the rumored size of the amounts for signing with the new tour ($200 million for Mickelson!) creates a competition without real competition. Winning or even playing well loses a lot of significance because regardless of score each of the 48 takes home a check.

Golfing skill is being upstaged.

No longer is it how good you are but how quickly you can get your name on the LIV Golf contract.

The future in part will be determined what the major championships decide concerning LIV Golf members eligibility. The USGA allowed them to compete in the U.S. Open if they had already earned a spot but The Masters, PGA Championship and British Open have yet to make public their thinking.

Whatever the future holds the LIV Golf Series’ ill-conceived attempt to carve a spot in professional golf for themselves is to the detriment of the establish PGA Tour and DP World Tour. Fans, local communities, and charities will also be big losers. Right now, most world class golfers compete against each other almost weekly while building a reputation and a legacy of which they can be proud.

Others are taking the approach easy money is more important.

Nashville National Golf Links – New Ownership Is All About Satisfying Customers

I’ve always wondered what would possess someone to own a golf course, after all, they are typically not the money-making machines that they once were. So, what would be the allure to leaving a perfectly good, well-paying career and purchasing a business that is physically and mentally demanding and is often a financial drain? It just doesn’t seem to make sense. Then I met Jonathan Williams.

Jonathan Williams is passionate about two things: golf and helping people. Before becoming the owner and General Manager of Nashville National Golf Links – the old Highland Rim Golf Course – in Joelton, TN just outside of Nashville, Jonathan spent 25 years in the financial services industry, sitting behind a desk, staring at a computer screen. “I had a solid career which afforded me this opportunity,” Jonathan said, “The dream was to one day run my own business; what better way to use resources than to combine the business passion with my golf passion.”

Six years ago, Jonathan and his wife Gloria decided to take the biggest step of their lives and purchase a golf course. It was a good fit because of his passions (golf and helping people). Their dream was (and still is) to create a family-oriented, user-friendly establishment where everyone is welcome to enjoy it.

For starters, there is no specific dress code at Nashville National Golf Links, just wear clothes and shoes. On the course, you’re likely to encounter all types of golfers, old, young, male, female, beginners, and seasoned players. You may also come across the odd fivesome – but not to worry, the ones we saw were hard to catch up to.

One of the first things the Williams did after purchasing the golf course was to make a few upgrades, clean up the fairways and the greens, and then the clubhouse and building facilities. In 2019, a new fleet of gas-powered golf carts was brought in and equipped with Club Car’s proprietary Shark Experience GPS and Bluetooth systems. Future plans include a new heating and air conditioning system in the pavilion building so it can be used year-round as well as adding a larger snack bar.

At most courses, the 9th hole leads back to the clubhouse, and golfers can fuel up with food and drink. Not so at Nashville National, the 10th tee is about a mile from the clubhouse. To better serve his customers, Williams has built a drive-up snack bar at the 4th green. There are 10 holes in this part of the course that a golfer can easily access.   In addition to pre-made sandwiches and hot dogs, there’s a BBQ grill and fresh burgers are usually available, as are all of your favorite beverages.

This amazingly beautiful 18-hole layout is set among natural Tennessee beauty. You’ll encounter limestone bluffs and Sycamore Creek, several times. And unlike many courses, not a single home has been built on the course. Other than the usual golf course pitfalls and hazards Mother Nature throws at you – water, wetlands, trees, etc., you’re not going to encounter a whole lot of manmade trouble, there are a total of three sand traps on the course.

Something that seems to be the norm at Nashville National is the blind tee shot, there are several of them as well as a blind approach shot on number 1. This alone puts a premium on course knowledge; another good reason to get to know Nashville National Golf Links.

A quick look at the scorecard lets you know that the course’s length is not going to overpower you. From the back tees, Nashville National plays 6,107 yards with a course rating of 70.2 and a slope of 123. There are three par 3s on the front, so par out here is 71. Three other sets of tees – Blue (5,573/67/118), White (4,950/64.5/112), and Yellow (4,249/65.5/110) provide suitable yardages so that the course can be enjoyed by golfers of all levels.

The five par 3s are by no means pushovers. Number 3 is a 164-yarder that plays uphill and probably closer to 170 yards. The wetlands between tee and green should not come into play and if you’re unsure of your tee shot there is plenty of room to the right to bail out. The par 3, 5th hole plays 159 yards from the back tees. The tee sits 40 feet above the green and the hole probably plays closer to 145. Woods line the left side so if you hook your tee shot, you can kiss that ball goodbye. Anything right and/or long is in the wetlands. Number 8 is a beast of a par 3 From the back tees, playing 243 yards into an elevated green. There’s not a lot of trouble, you just need to hit it long and straight. Par is a good score here.

Number 11 is a 168-yard par 3 with no trouble around – as long as you hit it straight and not too long; Sycamore Creek runs down the left side and wetlands on the right of the green. The green is a lot longer than it is wide. Number 16 is the signature par 3 on the Nashville National layout. From the back tees, the hole plays 195 yards, downhill, over water, and into the prevailing headwind. Not only is it a challenging hole, but it also looks good too!

The par 5s on the front 9 are 3-shot holes for the majority of golfers. Number 4 plays 553 yards from the back tees. A good drive followed by a good layup will still leave a mid-iron to wedge into the green. Anything right of the green is big trouble. Number 7 is another long par 5 – 542 yards. There’s plenty of room right off the tee, but then you want to favor the left side on your layup, otherwise, you could find the long, overgrown grass area or be blocked out by the large oak tree. Your approach shot plays uphill and longer than your GPS says.

The back nine ends with two par 5s, the short, 503-yard 17th, which is another three-shotter, and the 540-yard 18th. Seventeen is a double dogleg, first right and then back slightly to the left. The fairway has a lot of rolling hills in it and your third shot plays into a small green. Your round ends with a blind tee shot on a slight dogleg left. Your drive needs to favor the right side, anything left is most likely lost in the forest.

Nashville National Golf Links has facilities to warm up every facet of your game before your round or to just get in some good practice. There’s a full-length driving range with six target flags, a large, short game area, as well as chipping and putting areas. There’s also a fully stocked pro shop with all of the necessary golf accessories – gloves, balls, hats, and logoed apparel, as well as a snack bar with beer, burgers, hot dogs, and snack foods.

One thing you can never count on is Mother Nature and golfers know that there is always a chance of rain, thunderstorms, and inclement weather. Nashville National is the only course I know that will offer you a full-value raincheck whether you’re on the first hole or the 18th green. No partial credit, no pro-rating, you’ll get a raincheck for a free round of golf – all 18 holes. Once again, it’s all about giving customers what they deserve.

The Club at Savannah Harbor – The Best is Getting Better

After 22 years, The Club at Savannah Harbor is getting a much-needed facelift! Savannah Harbor is a stunning 18-hole championship golf course designed by well-known and renowned architect Robert Cupp with tremendous input from legendary PGA TOUR professional “Slammin’ Sammy” Snead. The Club at Savannah Harbor has received numerous accolades over the years including recognition by GOLFWEEK Magazine as one of the “Best Courses You Can Play in Georgia”2020.

The Club at Savannah Harbor is located in beautiful Savannah, GA, and offers a very memorable golf experience. After all, how often do you get to play where the pros play, specifically the PGA TOUR’s Champions Tour, Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf Championship?

The course lies nestled between the banks of the Savannah and Back Rivers of the splendid Georgia Low Country. The serenity of coastal Georgia, with its tidal marshes and abundant wildlife, provides a stunning backdrop for The Club at Savannah Harbor. You’ll also enjoy magnificent views of both Hutchinson Island and Savannah’s Historic District which exudes Southern charm.

Since the Club at Savannah Harbor opened in 1999, the golf course has received a four-star rating from Golf Digest for “Highly Recommended Places to Play.” It is also ranked among the Top 100 Golf Courses in America by Conde Nast Traveler. From the back tees, Savannah Harbor plays 7,288 yards to a par of 72 with a course rating of 74.8 and a slope of 138. The Member Tees seem to be the most popular and play 6,330 yards (70.7/130) but I had a great time playing the Silver Tees, which play 6,048 yards (69.5/125). Ladies will find that the Jade Tees (5,261/71.0/125) can be a lot of fun and still provide some excitement. As always, pick the tees that best suit your game and enjoy yourself.

The course is currently closed and will remain closed until the beginning of September. According to Head Golf Professional, Chris Thompson, when it reopens the shape and length of the course will remain virtually the same. There will be a lot of cleaning up and clearing out in certain areas of the course and it will receive much-needed work on fairways and tee boxes. The irrigation system will be brought up to today’s standards and the greens will be enlarged to their original size and shape and replanted.

Given Sam Snead’s pension for gambling, it’s no surprise that the golf course was designed with a “risk versus reward” philosophy in mind. You’ll encounter several opportunities to shorten various holes but often the risk may outweigh the reward.

I’ve always had a fondness for golf courses that name their holes. Many are named after an interesting attribute of the hole itself, however, the names of most of the holes at Savannah Harbor pay homage to the history of the Savannah area. And there are several memorable ones.

Not only did Sam Snead help design the course, but there’s also a hole named after him as well. Number 10 is a short, 323-yard par 4 named “Slammin’ Sammy.” You’re encouraged to do your best Sam Snead impersonation and hit your tee shot as far as you can – straight. Hit it over the fairway bunkers on the right and you’re in the clear. All that’s left is a short approach shot into an elevated kidney-shaped green. Your only obstacle is the large bunker fronts left. It’s a good birdie hole to start the back nine.

Number 14 is another short hole that is best played with a straight shot off the tee. It’s aptly named “Alligator Alley” because the fairway serves as a crosswalk for gators crossing the course. It plays 284 yards and if you pull either your tee shot or approach shot to the left, you’re probably wet. A good drive will leave a short pitch shot into the green, a safe iron off the tee will leave you in the rolling mounds of the fairway. It’s another hole where par – or better – is a definite possibility.

Number 16 is named “Washington’s Guns” which is about what it takes to reach the green in regulation; from the back tees the hole plays 459 yards, yet it’s the #10 handicap! A good tee shot played just left of the fairway bunker will leave a tong to mid-iron approach into the green which is guarded by a bunker in the front left.  You’ll need to hit an accurate shot into the green because of its crowned, and any misplaced shot can easily roll off. Par here is an excellent score.

Wormsloe was one of the first and most successful plantations in Savannah and lends its name to the finishing hole at Savannah Harbor. At 457 yards from the back tees, there’s a lot of fairway between you and the green. Your tee shot needs to avoid the fairway bunkers on either side that are strategically placed in the landing area. Finding one off the tee will make par that much tougher. Your approach shot is played into another crowned green that is well protected by a large bunker on the right. Anything long is a tough up and down because of the slope of the green.

Savannah Harbor has always had tremendous practice facilities and even with all of the renovations going on, that will not change. There’s a large, dual-ended practice facility with a short game area and a large practice putting green.

If you’re looking for a place to stay during your visit, The Westin Savannah Harbor is located adjacent to the golf course. The hotel has 390 guest rooms, several restaurants, an outdoor pool, and a ton of meeting space as well as extensive meeting space, multiple dining concepts, and an outdoor pool. A complimentary water taxi is available to take you across the river into the historic sections of Savannah, Georgia’s oldest city. There’s a marina onsite that allows boaters to stop off at the resort for dinner or golf.

The Refuge Golf Course in Flowood, MS: An Old Course with a New Look

If you played The Refuge Golf Course in Flowood, MS before 2017, you may not recognize it these days. The Refuge closed in 2017 for an extensive renovation and restoration under the direction of golf course architect Nathan Crace. During that time, a $50-million hotel and conference center was also built where the old clubhouse used to stand.

The Refuge Golf Course was originally designed by Roy Case and opened to rave reviews in 1998. The Club quickly gained acclaim as the “Best Purely Public Golf Course in Mississippi.” GolfLink.com ranked The Refuge as high as the #4 course in the state.

The Refuge is carved out of 200 acres of wetlands. The course is routed through stands of towering pines and centuries-old oaks and for the most, the original wetlands have been preserved. The original layout was nine holes out and nine holes back, like something you’d expect to find on a links-style golf course. Back then, the rap on the course was that it was too short for longer, better players and too tight and awkward for lesser-skilled golfers. Miss the fairway and you literally took your life in your hands, looking for your ball in the snake-infested rough!

Crace, who is from Mississippi, readily accepted the task to update and renovate the course. As part of the renovation, invasive trees were removed, and fairways were widened. Irrigation and drainage systems were also enhanced, and all course bunkers were rebuilt with the Better Billy Bunker system, which provides superior drainage. Many modifications were made to the overall routing including three new holes, the relocation of several water hazards, as well as new and enlarged cart paths. All greens were re-grassed with TifEagle Ultradwarf Bermuda and a new forward “Family” tee box was added.

The latest iteration of The Refuge plays to 7,013 yards from the tips with a course rating of 74,6 and a slope of 137. Most players I spoke with favored Tee II (6,327/71.1/135). There is now a suitable distance for players of every skill level from beginner to professional. Because the terrain in this area is so flat, The Refuge is an easy course to walk.

The Refuge features a nice mix of short risk/reward par 4s as well as longer, more challenging ones. Greens tend to be guarded by nasty little pot bunkers which can be penal with deep faces. Cart paths, bunkers, and wetland areas are meticulously maintained and add to The Refuge’s aesthetic value.

The newly designed Refuge Golf Course has several memorable holes. Number 6 is the first par 5 on the golf course. Trees on either side of the fairway guide you towards the green, which is visible from the tee box. The lone fairway bunker on the left catches its fair share of errant tee shots. Water comes into play about 100 yards from the green on the right and the green is protected by two more bunkers.

The course also features back-to-back par 3s at Numbers 7 and 8 which can make or break a good round. Number 7 is 182 yards and typically plays into the wind, especially in the afternoon. The green is elevated so you’ll need to select a club that will get you to the green. There’s a pot bunker front left and waterway right if you totally mishit it. The green is long and narrow and slopes back to front.

Number 8 plays 173 yards over water with a pot bunker situated just short of the green. The green is extremely large and deeper than it is wide; it can easily be a two-club difference between a front and back pin placement. It’s almost totally surrounded by water; anything right or short is most likely wet.

Number 16 is a short but interesting par 4, that plays 345 yards from Tee II. The lake on the left side creates a dogleg left and the large pine tree on the right side adjacent to Tee IV, forces you to play your tee shot towards the water. Trees line the right side; a good tee shot will leave a short pitch shot onto a green that is guarded with water on the left side.

At 377 yards, Number 18 is a relatively short and easy par 4 – as long as you keep your tee shot in play. Play your tee ball down the left side, that will take the fairway bunkers and water out of play. A good drive will leave a short iron or wedge into an elevated green that falls off to the left and is surrounded by bunkers. Eighteen provides a fitting end to an enjoyable – and memorable – round of golf.

The renovation also included an upgrade of The Refuge’s 15-acre aqua driving range. Every shot longer than a wedge is hit into a large pond with lighted fountains offering measured targets. Concrete was poured and new matted hitting surfaces were installed. Lights behind the range have also been added, allowing golfers to practice after the sun goes down.

The clubhouse was replaced by a golf shop within the new hotel. The new Sheraton hotel features multiple restaurants and bars, a swimming pool, a lazy river, 27,000 square feet of meeting space, a fitness center, a cooking school, and a spa. It is located just minutes from the city’s main airport. Head Golf Professional and General Manager Blake Hatfield’s office is located at the back of the golf shop.

Resort golf courses are, in most cases, more playable than your average daily fee course or private country club. Golfers at resort courses are there to have a good time, not set course records. As Flowood and the capital city of Jackson set their sights on becoming a viable golf destination, the renovation of The Refuge Golf Course is a step in the right direction. And the way Crace rerouted the course, it will be more appealing to golfers looking to just play nine holes. Playing the Refuge no longer requires 4 ½ hours to kill! Rates are quite reasonable too; the top in-season rate is $65.

The resort-style hotel at The Refuge Golf Course offers everything you need to feel welcome during travel. Rumbling Bald Releases Fall Golf Packages Amid Unprecedented Demand

Booking an annual or regular golf trip a couple of months in advance is so 2019. More and more, golf destinations and resorts are rolling out rates six months to a year ahead of schedule. Count Rumbling Bald in Lake Lure, N.C. among them.

With temps ranging from the mid-60s to the low 80s in September and October, ample fall foliage and the refreshing waters of Lake Lure next door, this 3,000, 36-hole golf panacea is a popular pick for fall golf getaways.

As such, Rumbling Bald, situated an hour east of Asheville and two hours west of Charlotte, is making its fall 2022 golf packages available to book this summer ahead of what is projected to be a record-breaking autumn season for the 3,000-acre golf destination.

Starting at $347 per golfer for two nights and two rounds of golf on Apple Valley and Bald Mountain, fall package rates are offered from Sept. 18 through Oct. 31. Three-night, three-round and four-night, four-round options are also available for $477 and $608 per golfer, respectively. Rates include all taxes and fees and are based on full occupancy in a Rumbling Bald villa or studio.

Lodging options include the Apple Valley Studios (across from Apple Valley) and two- and four-bedroom Fairway Villas situated along Bald Mountain just steps from the first tee. Via its wide variety of spacious vacation rentals, Rumbling Bald can accommodate golf groups of all sizes. Luxury vacation homes are also available for extended stays and golf rounds can be added a la carte.

Additionally, Rumbling Bald’s Weekday Special Golf Packages are a great value for those with flexible schedules and are offered Sunday through Wednesday starting at $320 per player for two nights and two rounds and range up to $554 per player for four nights and four rounds. Customized weekend packages for groups of all sizes are available year-round.

“Rumbling Bald is a year-round golf destination, but the peak fall season is when this property, and these courses, really shine,” says Rumbling Bald General Manager Jeff Geisler. “Temperatures are in the low 80s in September, transitioning to the 70s and 60s in October. The fall foliage around the lake is stunning, and that’s typically a dry period in the Carolinas.”

Rumbling Bald continues to extend complimentary golf rounds to leaders of groups of 12 or more when booking their first trip to the property. The Large Groups 12+ Comp is ideal for PGA Professional-member trips, small tournaments, or large golf buddy trips. The shoulder- and off-seasons are ideal for group play, with ample value and typically a faster pace of play than the peak spring and fall periods.

Getting There

Tucked along scenic Lake Lure and surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, Rumbling Bald is secluded yet eminently accessible from numerous metro areas. Charlotte, Asheville and Raleigh, N.C., Knoxville and Nashville, Tenn. and Greenville and Spartanburg, S.C. are all one to five hours away.

Golf Courses

The idyllic retreat features two contrasting 18-hole layouts: W.B. Lewis-designed Bald Mountain and Dan Maples-designed Apple Valley. Rumbling Bald’s marquee course, Apple Valley, stretches to nearly 6,800 yards and features expansive views of Bald Mountain and the surrounding Lake Lure area. Maples estimated 75% of shots at Apple Valley are either level or downhill, virtually unheard of for a mountain course. Shimmering mountain lakes adorn 12 holes, but water only occasionally comes into play.

Bald Mountain, at 6,300 yards, is renowned for its unique configuration of five par 5s and five par 3s. Movie buffs appreciate the 16th green, the backdrop of a scene from “Dirty Dancing.”  A protégé of golf course architect George Cobb, Lewis is known for his traditional approach to course design. This philosophy is reflected in Bald Mountain’s playability from tee to green.

Amenities

Rumbling Bald is rich with amenities and activities, including scenic Lake Lure boat tours, boat rentals, tennis, pickleball, a full-service spa and hiking trails. Families enjoy the Trout Stream Pool and Lazy River, winding its way through the outdoor pool area where guests relax under fan-cooled covered seating. The Charlie Rymer Golf Show To Air On ESPN2; Episode 1 Will Debut On June 5

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Season 2 of The Charlie Rymer Golf Show, which is set in Myrtle Beach, S.C., ”The Golf Capital of the World,” will debut Sunday, June 5 on ESPN2 from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.

The 14-episode season will feature celebrity guests, including television and film actor Ray Romano on the debut show. ESPN2 is available in 75 million households, bringing the good times of The Charlie Rymer Golf Show to players across the nation.

Former NFL All-Pro Sterling Sharpe and award-winning country music star Jamey Johnson will also be among the season’s featured guests. In addition to celebrity appearances, The Charlie Rymer Golf Show will showcase Myrtle Beach’s array of golf courses, game improvement tips, and the area’s abundant attractions, among other features.

The show will run through mid-October with new episodes airing on Sunday mornings between 7 a.m. – 9 a.m., depending on ESPN2’s scheduling commitments.

The show is built around Rymer, a former PGA TOUR player and longtime media personality, as he interacts with celebrities and locals, both on and off the course, with his typical charm and charisma.

Among the golf courses featured in Season 2 will be the Love and Fazio courses at Barefoot Resort & Golf, Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, King’s North at Myrtle Beach National, True Blue Golf Club, Glen Dornoch Waterway Golf Links, Prestwick Country Club, and Rivers Edge Golf Club.
