Women a Focus at PGA Tour Superstore

PGA Tour Superstore (PGATSS), the largest golf-specific retailer in the U.S., continues to have record sales while expanding the number of locations and says clubs, apparel, and accessories specifically for women are an important focus to fuel additional growth.

In an exclusive interview with CEO and President Dick Sullivan he described how the company is working to erase the traditional male-centric approach to golf retailing and the ongoing program to create a woman-friendly experience in their stores. This initiative is an important part of Sullivan’s plans for PGATSS’s future and is already producing impressive results.

To illustrate Sullivan related how at the grand opening last August of the new store in Fairfax, Va. a long line was queuing prior to unlocking the doors and the fire marshal-imposed occupancy limit of 375 was hit within a half an hour. Perhaps this could be considered not too surprising as PGATSS prides itself on each customer’s visit being “experiential” which is a strong attraction in today’s post-pandemic retailing. Sullivan however also told me that the Fairfax grand opening saw more women’s apparel sold than men’s, a complete reversal of the usual pattern.

Consumers respond to retailers with a large stock of aggressively priced inventory where salespeople are friendly and knowledgeable. This of course applies to golf and especially when targeting women golfers, many of whom are new to the game and are looking for help purchasing equipment, plus they are demanding functional yet stylish apparel. Golfers of both sexes are drawn to PGATSS’s size with locations up to 50,000 square feet having multiple hitting bays offering computer simulators for lessons or practice, in-depth inventory of not just equipment but shoes and clothing and in fact most anything needed to play or improve.

As the pandemic changed everyone’s life it was soon realized golf was a perfect antidote for cabin-fever stress and an outdoors activity in which the entire family could participate. The number of golfers and number of rounds saw a dramatic rise of roughly 3 million in 2020 and the National Golf Foundation is forecasting the number to be higher in 2021. A major part of the increase was due to women finding the game fun and recent data shows about 40% of new participants on and off course are women.

According to Sullivan, “Thirty four percent of the new women golfers are under 18 years of age, and we plan to encourage them with more in-store events such as clinics.” He added women’s golf apparel has very much become a reflection of their lifestyle and pointed out, “Women are shopping for and choosing functional apparel and are used to a more relaxed wardrobe.”

“Fitness and wellness spending is exploding. Wardrobes are more casual, and more and more people are OK with a casual environment on the golf course.”

Emphasizing women have been and will be a focus of PGATSS efforts to grow participation in the game the company began “Get Golf Ready,” a series of six one-hour group sessions for novices. The goal is to make women more comfortable with golf’s sometimes-bewildering jargon, etiquette, and rules not to mention with the arcane world of equipment. Participants are taught the basic swing with PGTSS supplying clubs if the student needs them.

PGATSS is the official retailer of the nationwide Women’s Golf Day and a sponsor of other programs introducing women to the game. Showing the across-the-board commitment is a slogan the company often uses, “Girls Got Drive.” Growing-the-game is a long-term goal, so each location runs weekly free clinics to help juniors become part of the sport and last summer a First Tee Leadership Summit for 40 teens was hosted at PGATSS’s owner Arthur Blank’s ranch in Montana.

Additional support is provided to several other organizations dedicated to bringing more women into the game including “She Who Golfs,” “Fore the Ladies, and “Women on Course”

Sullivan was candid about the company’s struggle during the pandemic. “All our stores were closed 54 days during the Covid pandemic, but every vendor was paid on time and not a single employee was furloughed.” A remarkable record few companies, especially in retail, can match.

There have been inventory and supply chain concerns since first quarter 2020 leading to some items being in short supply. Sullivan said for example push carts and package club sets for women and juniors, “were going out the door as soon as they come in.”

At times extraordinary efforts were called for to meet customer demand. Sullivan told of taking delivery of several thousand wedges with no grips as an expedient from an unnamed manufacturer. However, typical of the pervasive make-lemonade-from-lemons credo, not only were the wedges made available to golfers for purchase, but the lack of a stock grip meant “each could be customized for the individual golfer to match the grips of the other irons in the bag.”

Speaking of the bounce back from being hit with the problems from closure and inventory supply Sullivan said, “We were able to have a rapid recovery, quick pick up and there was no slow down going into 2021.”

As chairman of the National Golf Foundation’s Board of Directors Sullivan is a recognized industry leader in both golf and retailing and was the first retail executive to be elected to be board chairman in the history of the Association.

Addressing the future of PGATSS Sullivan said, “We did as much business in the first half of 2021 as all of 2019 which was a record year and projections for 2021 have been increased 20 percent.” The growth of the largest golf-specific retailer continues. By the start of 2022 there will be 50 stores nationwide with plans to add as many as 10 each year and a National Hiring Day was held in early November to find all the new employees required.

Typical of Sullivan’s personal focus he closed our conversation with, “We are most proud of overcoming traditional barriers in golf retail while keeping our culture and attitude to be customer friendly.”

Oakwoods Country Club – Pure Golf in the Western Carolina Foothills

Like many North Carolina country clubs I have written about, Oakwoods Country Club in Wilkesboro has a rather unique story. It’s about how a group of people who all shared the same passion for golf came together to create a country club that they could all be proud of. It’s also a story about how to take a brand-new club and make it debt-free within five years.

Oakwood’s story begins in the fall of 1952 when several prominent country club-minded citizens in Wilkes County met in the Forest Hills home of Pat M. Williams, Jr. and his wife Dottie. Approximately $100,000 was pledged toward the construction of a new golf course to be designed by soon-to-be-legendary golf architects Robert Trent Jones and J.B. McGovern. in December of 1952, the Wilkes Country Club was organized at a public meeting at the North Wilkesboro Town Hall.

Through the purchase and the execution of options, the group was able to acquire 148 acres of land at the base of the Brushy Mountains and Jones and McGovern got to work. Construction of the original nine-hole course and clubhouse began in early spring 1953 with Arthur Ham, a venerable Scot architect, serving as the course designer. What Mother Nature didn’t provide, Arthur Ham did.

In January of 1954 Wilkes Country Club was renamed Oakwoods Country Club and opened for play during that month. It seems that a lot of what went into the clubhouse was donated or done in barter for memberships. This included the clubhouse which was built on a “cost-plus” basis. Eventually, the contractor agreed to cut his fee in half and take stock in exchange. Several local manufacturers donated furniture and a local appliance dealer outfitted the kitchen free of charge. Lockers were bought and donated to the club by members who received five years of free locker rent in payment. Hence, the original clubhouse was built for around $30,000.

Oakwood continued as a 9-hole course until 1962 when then head PGA Professional Bill Greene, age 29, was asked to supervise the construction of 9 additional holes. Just before Greene was hired by Oakwoods, noted course designer Ellis Maples had been retained to stake out a potential new nine holes of golf on property adjacent to the club. Green got to work with several other hard-working members and began the arduous process of land clearing, grading, cultivation, and planting needed to bring the new nine to fruition for OCC’s avid golfer members. These additional 9 holes were built with nothing more than two 1950’s model Ford tractors, a tractor-pulled five-reel fairway mower, and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. The new 9 featured Bermuda grass fairways and greens and opened for play in May of 1963.

With nine new holes, it was time to reroute the golf course. Holes numbers 1 and 2 of the existing nine became holes 10 and 11 of what is now the back nine and the just-completed nine holes became the front nine. This routing still exists today at Oakwood Country Club. Membership – which was around 125 when Bill Greene arrived, soon swelled to over 500.

Bill Greene retired from Oakwood Country Club in 1994 after serving the club faithfully for 32 years. He passed away in 2009. Bill and his long-time assistant Billy Hayes oversaw many of the club’s amenities and improvements over the years including the building of the tennis courts and driving range (1966), the installation of an irrigation system (1969), the paving of the parking lot (1972), a much larger swimming complex (1977), the hiring of the club’s first Green’s Superintendent (1980), and the cart shed (1992).

Dramatic elevation changes, challenging tee shots, and large undulating greens highlight your round at Oakwood Country Club. It’s a well-known fact that Oakwood has long been celebrated for the quality of its greens. You’ll encounter several water hazards and strategically placed, well-manicured bunkers

The first hole at Oakwoods Country Club is a 162-yard par 3 that plays straight downhill and showcases the club’s elevation changes and according to Guy Carroll, Director of Golf & Clubhouse Operations, big numbers are every bit as prevalent as low numbers. It plays around 150 yards downhill and maybe the toughest 150-yard shot you’ll ever face on a starting hole! It’s not noticeable until you get to the green but there is a creek that runs along the left side.

Number 4 is a short par 5 with a hidden agenda. At only 443 yards, you’re thinking about making up a shot or two on the competition, but not so fast. It’s a dogleg left with another blind tee shot and a small fairway bunker on the right side that catches errant layup shots. A small lake guards the right side of the green and makes you think about your second shot. Two small bunkers guard the left side of this wide, shallow green.

Ten, 11, and 12 are a good trio of holes. Number 10 is a 388-yard par 4, which is handicapped as the second hardest hole on the course. If I were naming holes, this one would be called “Avoid the Creek,” because of the creek that bisects the fairway. Off the tee you’re faced with a choice: play left of the creek to the wider part of the fairway and have a little longer approach shot or play down the sliver of fairway on the right with a large hill and trees framing the right boundary. Or do what I do, take dead aim at the creek knowing I can’t possibly hit it straight and deal with the results. My ball chose the right side and I was left with an approach shot into a green that slopes right to left and is surrounded by four bunkers.

Number 11, (par 4, 336 yards) feature a blind tee shot, and if you hit it left into the valley, you’ll be faced with a long, incredibly uphill approach shot into a small green. Number 12 is a challenging par 3 that plays downhill and slightly less than the 144 yards stated on the scorecard. The green sits out on a peninsula so choose your club carefully and make a good swing. There’s a steep hill on the left side and the ball doesn’t always roll down to the bottom. Hit your tee shot over there and you’ll be faced with a tough downhill pitch shot over a bunker onto a green with water behind it. Keep it right!

Your final hole of the day ends as it started, with a challenging 174-yard par 3 that plays uphill over water and is all carry. A single bunker guards the front left of the green and the woods to the right have collected their fair share of golf balls. Par is a great way to end.

Oakwoods features a full-length driving range located across the street from the clubhouse and a large practice green behind the clubhouse so there’s no reason not to be ready when you hit the first tee. After your round, stop by the Oakwoods Grille for your favorite adult beverage and typical clubhouse fare. I can personally vouch for the grilled chicken sandwich!

Last Word. Oakwoods offers a challenging golf course that is a lot of fun to play and will keep you coming back again and again. The par 3 holes at Oakwoods Country Club can make or break a great round. On the scorecard, they are handicapped 4, 5, 7, and 14 which only proves they are not pushovers.

Oakwoods Country Club is all about golf. Period. You won’t find a pristine dining room, spa, or fancy locker room. What you will find is a swimming pool and a challenging, well-maintained golf course that is affordable for any budget. There are no initiation fees and membership categories are broken down by age. A full membership won’t run you more than $195/month no matter how old you are or how much you play. Play just twice a week and you’re averaging around $25 bucks a round. If you’re an avid golfer in the area, you can’t afford not to join.

Major No-Shows at PGA Show

Planning for the 69th PGA Merchandise Show is well underway, but a list of those renting exhibit space reveals several top companies are missing. The list dated Nov. 18, 2021 does not include the two largest golf equipment companies, Callaway Golf (NYSE: ELY) and Acushnet Holdings Corp. (NYSE: GOLF) nor well-known smaller makers Tour Edge Golf and Wilson Golf.

Missing as well are PXG and TaylorMade Golf though in the case of PXG they have never had a presence at the Show and TaylorMade has not taken booth space for the last three years.

Also on the no-show list are subsidiaries of the big two. Callaway’s Odyssey (putters), Jack Wolfskin (apparel), TopGolf (entertainment), OGIO (bags) and Travis Mathew (apparel) which at past Shows had made the company the largest exhibitor. Acushnet is the maker of Titleist (balls and clubs), FootJoy (shoes and apparel) plus the brands Scotty Cameron (putters) and Vokey Wedges.

The Show is scheduled Jan. 25-28 in Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center after a one-year hiatus when events were held virtually due to the worldwide pandemic. It is the golf industry’s largest annual gathering and serves as a primary source of continuing education for PGA Professionals.

Sponsored by the PGA of America and tagged “The Major of the Golf Business,” in recent years it has occupied 1 million square feet of exhibit and meeting space while drawing 40,000 industry members including PGA Professionals, suppliers, and media. Early estimates for 2022 indicate the numbers attending may be one-third less than in 2020 while the number of exhibitors will be substantially fewer than the 1,000 on the floor for the past several years.

An Oct. 25, 2021, media release from PGA Golf Expositions who run the Show partnering with the PGA of America cited, “A recent survey completed by PGA Professionals and top buyers who frequently attend the PGA Show revealed that 70 percent of PGA Professionals and top buyers currently plan to attend the 2022 PGA Show; 19 percent are undecided with plans to be made within two months prior to the event.”

Concerning the 2022 Show PGA Golf Exhibitions Vice President Marc Simon was quoted, “While we anticipate a temporary contraction in participation this year, we are pleased to share that we are on course to welcome more than 600 golf brands and thousands of industry stakeholders to the 2022 PGA Show.”

Reflecting Simon’s comments there is no doubt people have become more cautious regarding travel and personal interaction, but tradeshow industry experts often point out while online or virtual meetings have their uses businesspeople know personal contact is the best way to build lasting mutually beneficial relationships.

For large companies exhibiting at the PGA Show requires a multimillion-dollar budget and some observers believe justification for this expense may be being reevaluated due to the experience of the 2021 virtual Show. Costs for a floor exhibit include renting space, furnishings and setup plus staff travel and expenses for a week in Orlando not to mention the possibility other projects having to be postponed.

Marketers know current customers may be served via the telephone, email, and evermore effective online software to handle everything from catalog showings to order processing. Face-to-face meetings may then be significantly reduced if not eliminated entirely.

In the past a strong inducement for companies to attend is the Show affords exposure to potential customers, but modern technology can provide a solution to this need also. Using sophisticated algorithms to match computer IP addresses with purchase-intent data lists possible buyers may be identified. Marketing departments can then place customer-specific advertising on viewed websites and initiate email or telephone contact.

On the other hand, some in the industry have repeatedly pointed out no matter the sophistication of virtual meetings or marketing, face-to-face relationship building will never be replaced. It would seem for the golf industry the solution remains to be figured out.

While no one is saying the PGA Merchandise Show is dead organizers will have to find better ways to generate an appropriate return on investment for attendees and companies of all sizes.

LPGA CME Group Tour Championship Showcases ‘Women Friendly’ Naples Golf

CME Group Tour Championship at Tiburon Golf Club

The LPGA season concludes this week at the CME Group Tour Championship at Tiburon Golf Club at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort in Naples, Florida. And what an incredible season it has been, by any measure. It could be argued that the LPGA’s star has never burned brighter, what with charismatic personalities like Jessica and Nelly Korda, Lydia Ko, Lexi Thompson and Danielle Kang.

The same could be said for women’s golf, especially over the past two years. Women comprise more than a quarter of all golfers, and represent 40% of all new golfers, according to the National Golf Foundation. In 2020, an estimated 450,000 women (juniors and adults) took up the game. Many golf courses now have multiple sets of tees rated for women, and golf pro shops carry as many women’s apparel and equipment lines as men’s.

Often referred to as the “Golf Capital of the World,” Naples and the surrounding Paradise Coast have been leaders in advancing the game for the ladies, and it shows throughout the region’s golf offerings and culture. Numerous public courses offer women’s golf leagues and instruction, and private courses host women’s golf social events, competitive tournaments and couples leagues.

Shining Example

Need a case in point? Look no further than around the corner from Tiburon Golf Club at the Club at Olde Cypress. Conveniently situated between the Gulf of Mexico’s sugar sand beaches and its main transportation artery, I-75, Olde Cypress is home to one of the region’s only P.B. Dye-designed golf courses. And on the course, on any given week during the high season, you’re likely to find one of the largest women’s golf groups in Southwest Florida.

The P.B. Dye-designed Course at Olde Cypress

A throng of 200 women golfers muster each week, some playing nine holes and others logging the full 18. Many female members (Olde Cypress is both private, and privately owned) participate for purely social reasons, while others are in it to win it. As they are prone to saying around Olde Cypress, golf stands for “GO Ladies and have Fun.” And to see the smiles and hear the laughs while they’re making their way around Dye’s eminently playable layout, they certainly are.

With a full slate of members, ownership at Olde Cypress understands just how important investing in its golf product is. The golf course recently reopened after a complete remastering of all turf on its tees, fairways and greens, as did its 34,000-square-foot clubhouse following several updates to its golf shop and its stunning second floor, which overlooks the 9th and 18th greens.

Women on Course at Olde Cypress

Other amenities at Olde Cypress include tennis and pickleball courts, a fitness center and pool and a 34,000-square-foot clubhouse featuring both casual and fine dining. The club is the centerpiece of a highly sought-after, 450-acre gated enclave with resale homes ranging from $550,000 to over $1 million. Airports, beaches, shopping and numerous marinas with Intracoastal and deep-sea access are just minutes away.

Stay-and-Play

When it comes to a couples or ladies golf getaway, it’s hard to top the La Playa Golf and Beach Resort, a boutique property situated right on the sugar sand beaches of the tranquil Gulf of Mexico. Guests have access to the La Playa Golf Club, home to a hidden gem of a Bob Cupp design that’s regionally revered for its conditioning and playability. The golf club is an easy 10-minute drive from the hotel, and its 10-minute tee time intervals ensure an enjoyable pace of place and plenty of spacing between groups. Cupp’s layout winds around 14 lakes and water features, but the well-placed forward tees take most of the water out of play on tee shots.

The La Playa Golf Club

Back at the beach, La Playa’s beautifully designed oceanfront hotel offers guests the ideal spot to rest and recharge for their next group of golf. For have-clubs-will-travel women, the lodging is every bit as important as the golf. And La Playa doesn’t disappoint with its newly renovated rooms and suites. Golf groups of any size can cap off the evening at Baleen, the resort’s award-winning restaurant just a few steps from the surf and sand of the Gulf.

BALEEN at La Playa Beach & Golf Resort

La Playa’s “Perfect Golf Escape” package offers guests one round with a cart and practice range balls as part of their stay at the resort. It’s the perfect stay-and-play for keeping your feet on the fairways and toes in the sand.

Getting There

There was a time when this far Southwestern corner of the Sunshine State was considered remote. And driving to the southernmost point of I-75 still a certain charm to it. But modern-day Naples and the Paradise Coast couldn’t be easier to reach. The region is served by the Southwest Florida International Airport in southern Lee County, offering direct flights from nearly 50 cities on 14 different airlines. The Naples Airport in the heart of Collier County is a premier, full-service FBO with U.S. Customs services. For golfers arriving by car, Naples is accessible via I-75 from points north and Florida’s east coast.

Feel vs. Real – deWiz Swing Analyzer

It seems nowadays anything labeled as “high tech” attracts attention and there’s no better example in golf training devices than the deWiz sensor watch. It tracks hand movement during the swing providing pulse feedback plus visuals via a Bluetooth-linked smartphone app.

WYNTK
Anyone who has been serious about improving their game knows the truth of the statement “what the swing feels like is not what is occurring” –the old feel vs. real phenomenon which makes self-instruction difficult if not impossible and provides jobs for thousands of golf instructors.

To provide a real time answer to this problem, without the necessity of hitting shots next to an instructor or even sending videos to him or her, the deWiz swing analyzer is now available. Five years in development the deWiz watch-style swing analyzer uses sophisticated sensors to measure the position of the hands throughout a swing and when user-defined parameters are violated a mild electric pulse or audio buzz occurs. The result is swing practice can become true swing training since improper hand positions are detected in real-time making correction easier on the next attempt.

The truly instructive feature of the deWiz is the avatar shown on the no-charge smartphone app that depicts the good and bad moves of the swing. For example, two of the most important factors, swing plane and tempo, are recorded and reported then shown in the smartphone graphic so corrections may be more quickly achieved.

“deWiz’s data capture capabilities are unmatched via our wearable device, precisely measuring golf swing data like transition plane, length of backswing, hand speed and tempo ratio like never before. But what sets deWiz apart is our Learning Stimuli. Interpreting data on a screen and translating that into a proper swing motion is a time-consuming, trial-and-error process. Meanwhile, deWiz combines high-precision data with real-time feedback within a golfer’s swing to help them improve faster,” said Markus Westerberg, co-founder and chief technology officer and certified PGA of Sweden instructor.

Most of us aren’t overly wowed by product endorsements from famous players but the list for deWiz is impressive including Martin Hall, Bryson DeChambeau, Annika Sorenstam, Henrik Stenson, Lydia Ko and Vijay Singh.

While the cost is more than a new driver this is a quality unit with understandable instructions and instant assessment of swing faults. For those willing to make the investment in the future of their games deWiz is an excellent choice.

Beginners’ Guide to Professional Golf

Golf is an extremely popular sport, and learning how to play can be lots of fun. If you are considering giving the game a go, there are some important facts that you need to know. Playing golf is not just about hitting a small white ball into a hole. It is a complicated sport with a considerable amount of rules, etiquette and tradition.

If you play golf, it can open up new social circles as well as help to keep your mind sharp. This guide will teach you everything that you need to know about learning how to play golf as a beginner as well as some useful information on the equipment that you’ll need.

Golfing Equipment

The first thing that you will need is a set of golf clubs. You can find them at your local golf club, but if you are looking for some good deals, it’s best to shop online. Purchasing brand new golf clubs can be expensive, but there are some great affordable sets available. Some well-known brands to look out for are Cobras, Taylormade and Callaway. The latter brand is widely considered to be one of the best in the business!

It’s also a good idea to purchase some golf balls. As you get more accustomed to playing the game, you’ll find that your shots improve. This means that you’ll start using balls more frequently, and they won’t last as long. Golf balls can be pricey, but there are some cheap options available online and in sports shops.

Did you know you can bet online for various golf games and tournaments? Please visit www.novibet.co.uk/sports for more information.

Driving Ranges & Driving Courses

If you’re a beginner at golf, it’s best to go with an experienced friend or loved one the first few times. They can point out where you are going wrong and ensure that your technique is correct. If they are not available to take you, consider heading down to a driving range or a golf course for some practice.

Driving ranges are ideal for beginners. You’ll find nice calm surroundings with greatly reduced pressure compared to when you play on the actual course. There are usually practice fairways, golf mats and lots of different environmental targets. You can use them to improve your contact with the ball and to get used to the various types of clubs that you’ll be using.

Driving ranges are not expensive either; prices depend on how long you’re planning on being there. Some will offer discounts for junior players. If you’re planning on practising more than once, it might be worth looking into buying a membership card.

There are also some great courses that offer beginner lessons. It’s always best to try and book with an experienced instructor who can give you some top tips on how to start playing golf like a professional.

Conclusion

If you’re new to the game of golf, it’s best to ease into it gradually. Start off with some practice in a quiet environment where you can perfect your swing. Chat with friends about playing in the future for more fun!

Never Too Early, Never Too Late Holiday Golf Gift Guide

Sometimes the only way to fit in a round of golf is to get it in early. And that’s certainly the case with holiday shopping this season, with all the supply chain and shipping hazards (to borrow from golf parlance) that must be evaded. So to speed up the pace of play, we present our “way too early” golf gift guide to jump-start your online shopping experience. You can thank us, later.

Radmor Golf Fall + Fall & Winter Collection

Saving the planet one piece of golf apparel at a time is an ambitious resolution. But that’s just what Radmor Golf has set out to do. The Seattle-based golf apparel company is the only brand in the golf industry to eliminate the use of “virgin” polyester at the garment level – a harmful material used in the vast majority of “stretch” and “moisture wicking” fabrics.

Radmor Golf

In doing so, Radmor Golf has reduced the amount of recycled ocean polyester and recycled nylon to just 10%, almost unheard of in the apparel business. Instead, founders Scott Morrison and Bob Conrad rely primarily on BCI organic and extra-long-staple Pima cotton, two of the softest, most durable cotton types available.

Radmor’s new fall and winter collection features a curated assortment of high-performance, refreshingly casual polo shirts, corduroy and knit pants and t-shirts in fall colors like sage and blue graphite. And as golfers battle the elements this winter, or just want to stay toasty, Radmor’s hoodies, sweatshirts are popular plays, and its weather-resistant Moscrip Jacket is perfect for rainy or blustery days.

For Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Radmor is planning a “site-wide” sale with savings ranging from 30 to 50%.

The VERO X1 ($39.99) is nothing short of a technological marvel, replete with a metal-infused mantle and enhanced perimeter-weighting that produces the highest allowable velocity off the clubface. According to independent testing recently conducted by Golf EQ, OnCore Golf’s VERO X1 bested Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x in distance and delivered 60% less sidespin. Professional golfer Erik Compton just switched to the VERO X1 after rigorous testing and says it is the longest, straightest ball he’s ever played.

TRUE linkswear + Foray X + Sport

The walking-focused golf shoe brand headed up by Jason Moore and his brother / PGA TOUR player Ryan Moore debuted several new lines this year including its wildly popular TRUE Pebble and Dead Golfer collections. Rounding into the final stretch of 2021, these Pacific Northwest pioneers are bolstered by an $11.25 million investment from private equity firm KarpReilly.

TRUE linkswear

Recently, TRUE debuted the limited-edition Queen of Clubs Foray X True Knit II ($175), its first collaboration with the women’s golf apparel brand Foray Golf. The shoes come wrapped in a Foray-designed carry bag perfect for travel or just storing the shoes at home. Foray has also added several unique finishes to the shoe, including a translucent sole under which sits the Queen of Clubs artwork.

The Moore brothers are all about comfort and performance, and TRUE’s Sport Series was just unveiled in November to rave reviews. Engineered for the eternal pursuit of par and the grinders and early risers, as the TRUE crew likes to say, the Sport’s adaptive upper is both breathable and waterproof, a one-two punch any diehard golfer would relish. It’s offered in two models, OG ($165) and Lux ($175).

TRUE is planning a Black Friday sale with killer “final sale” deals on older models, big-time savings on top-selling collections and free gift cards with certain levels of spending.

Sun Mountain + Cirque Rain Gear

Let’s face it, there will be times this winter when the weather says “no” to golf. With Sun Mountain’s new Cirque rain gear, golfers are now free to say “no” right back. Cirque is the company’s top-of-the-line waterproof lineup and is its most breathable rain suit to date. The jacket and pants are extremely lightweight, waterproof, and breathable due to their three-layer construction.

Sun Mountain

The breathable waterproof membrane has a 20k waterproof rating and an elite 50k breathability rating. Key is the four-way stretch fabric that makes this rain suit ultimately playable – a must for golfers who want to be able to perform amid the elements, not just play. Cirque is available in Men’s Full-Zip Jacket at $299.99 and Pants at $259.99.

PeakVision + GX6 + SL9

PeakVision’s Dual Zone lenses give golfers something they simply don’t get with any other eyewear: an upper zone for blocking harmful UV rays and a lower zone that elucidates green topography. If Neo and Trinity from the Matrix played golf, they’d wear “Peaks.” For the holidays and into 2022, the company is leaning hard into its GX6 ($127.50 on sale) and SL9 ($118.99 on sale) models.

PeakVision GX6

The GX6 is made from aluminum-magnesium, a much lighter and more durable frame material. The frame’s temple pieces also feature rubberized technology for added gripping, spring hinges for added flexibility, and a fully adjustable nose bridge. SL9 features a fully adjustable hypoallergenic nose bridge for maximized performance and spring hinges for added flexibility.

Southern Tide Polos + Quarter Zips

Greenville, S.C.-based Southern Tide knows exactly how to stay in its lane. After all, when your logo is a Skipjack (fish), you can’t exactly start cranking out heavy wool hoodies and joggers. Instead, this unapologetically preppy brand is sticking with long sleeve polos and quarter zips this winter, perfect for golfers in tropical or temperate climates seeking a little shelter from the 50s and 60s.

Southern Tide

The Driver Heather Long Sleeve Performance Polo ($99) is a classic piece with a classic fit with plenty of stretch for ease of movement on the course and Southern Tide’s usual UV protection. The Cruiser Heather Micro Striped Performance Quarter-Zip Pullover ($110) features stretch and moisture-wicking fabric and is offered in five colors. And when it does rain in Southern Tide country, the Intracoastal Quarter-Zip Pullover ($165) affords ample protection.

Peter Millar + Hoodies

Golf’s leading bespoke brand is getting into the hoodie game, and early indications are that Raleigh, N.C.-based Peter Millar has come to play. At the top of the line is the cozy Excursionist Flex Popover Hoodie ($378), crafted in Europe with Italian Merino wool. It features a tailored fit with a dash of performance yarn to give it just enough stretch for playability.

Peter Millar

Next up is the Crown Crafted Merino Waffle Hoodie ($248), a slightly more formal hoodie, if there is such a thing, with Merino wool sewn in a waffle knit pattern for a visibly comfy texture. And what’s a great hoodie without a pair of golf joggers? Peter Millar’s Apollo Performance Pants ($99) are available in navy blue and iron, and perfect for on- and off-course wear.

DownUnder Board + 2.0 Tour Edition

For most part of golf’s storied history, training aides have focused almost entirely on the upper body, whether it’s swing plane, path or impact. The DownUnder Board is eschewing tradition by helping golfers active their lower bodies. More than 100 Tour pros are using the “DUB,” including Brendon Todd, Harold Varner III, Luke Donald and Christina Kim.

The DUB 2.0 Tour Edition was released earlier this year featuring adjustable width for a variety of different swing types ranging from full to chipping and even putting. It can also be rotated for golfers who prefer to flare their feet for additional rotation. The DUB was invented by Australian golfer and instructor Bradley Hughes, who’s focused on creating a solution for stabilizing the lower body during the golf swing.

DownUnder Board

Using the board is a cinch: just set the width and rotation, apply pressure to the board with the inside of the feet and make a golf swing. Hughes recommends taking several swings without a ball, first, to get a feel for it. The DUB 2.0 Tour Edition was available on sale for $99.50 as of this writing, including an instructional video from Hughes. It’s regularly $109.

Arccos Caddie + Link

Arccos Caddie operates via Smart Sensors screwed into the ends of club grips, or via Smart Grips and provides golfers with shot tracking, smart distances for clubs, a range finder, strokes gained analytics and more. Users simply download the app, pair their clubs via Bluetooth connection, download the course they’re playing and away they go.

Arccos Caddie

And now with Arccos Caddie Link, golfers can leave their phones in their bags, golf cart or pushcart and still enjoy the full suite of Arccos features. Link is a wearable clip that attaches to a player’s belt or waistband, records shots and transfers the data via Bluetooth connection to the base smartphone. Because it frees up the phone’s microphone, golfers can listen to music, sporting events or take videos on the course.

Link retails for $129, and it can be bundled with Smart Sensors (14, one for each club including a putter sensor) for $279.99 for a 10% savings.

Pinehurst Resort + Donald Ross Package

If couples give each other new vehicles for Christmas, is it crazy to think a golf package, at only around a 1/20th of the price, would be an over-the-top gift? Pinehurst Resort’s Donald Ross Package is an absolute bargain in the “off-season,” offering golfers a chance to experience the Cradle of American Golf at over 50% off the peak spring and fall rates. Packages include two nights’ accommodations in any of the resort’s three hotels, villas or condos and three rounds of golf on any of its nine courses.

The 11th Hole on Pinehurst No. 4

And because all that golf makes for a hungry group, Pinehurst also throws in its famous Southern-style breakfast each morning and a three-course dinner every evening of your stay. The Donald Ross Package starts at $692 per player from Nov. 28 – Feb. 28 (note: the Carolina Hotel will be closed Dec. 19 – Jan. 5). Playing the famed No. 2 requires a $125 surcharge, but it’s more than worth the add-on this time of year to experience the site of the 2024 U.S. Open (and 2029, 2035, 2041 and 2047).

WYNTK
Based in Portland, Ore. PAYNTR Golf was begun by David Paynter, a former professional cricketer and Mike Forsey, an industry executive with experience at several of the leading footwear companies. Building on what was learned making shoes for cricket they felt the global market was ready for a new and innovative golf shoe.

The heart of the X 001 F comfort/performance features is how the combination of the TPU outsole and the cushioning of the foam midsole plus the graphite “Propulsion Plate” work with the unique pattern of nubs on the sole to control the rotational energy of the swing. The design was specifically engineered to help recreational players make more efficient use of ground forces to produce more power.

At present sales are all DTC (direct to consumer) through the PAYNTRGOLF.com website.

Our evaluation is these are very comfortable shoes to wear, and they have loads of lateral support so even the most aggressive swingers will like them. Comparison with competitive shoe models is difficult but PAYNTR’s pricing is in the range of similar performance shoes.

WYNTK
PXG is serious about providing game-improvement category clubs to those golfers needing that type of club by expanding their line with the new 0341 fairways and 0317 hybrids as well as continuing the policy of moving their pricing down market which should help to attract a larger number of buyers.

According to their website both the 0341 fairways and 0317 hybrids are being sold at a discount of $130 from what is presumably is the “regular price” though it is not known if any sales have been or will be made at the higher number. An interesting historical contrast can be drawn with the 2017 model PXG 0341 Fairway Woods that carried a list price of $500 each and 0317 Hybrids were $400 each.

The targeting of the largest club-buying segment, recreational players wanting moderately price clubs with high quality and the latest technology, was confirmed in the press announcement by Bob Parsons company founder and CEO. “For those who need more forgiveness, our XF GEN4 Golf Clubs are our highest achievement yet. Our new fairways and hybrids not only pardon a multitude of sins, but also round out the lineup so you can take sharper aim, hit it farther, and score lower.”

The 0341 fairways and 0317 hybrids join the 0811 XF GEN4 driver and 0311 XP GEN4 irons brought to market last spring. For all models the XF stands for “Xtra Forgiveness.”

The Valley at Eastport Golf Club – Don’t Let the Length Fool You.

The Valley at Eastport Golf Club sits on a piece of land nestled along the beautiful Intracoastal Waterway, just off Highway 17 between North Myrtle Beach and Little River, SC. The course originally opened in 1988 and was designed by Dennis Griffiths. At only 6,200 yards from the back tees, The Valley at Eastport is a course that isn’t going to overpower many golfers, however, it’s not your typical Grand Strand layout. It has always been a favorite of locals and snowbirds in North Myrtle Beach and Little River and is especially popular for couples.

It’s more of a finesse course with lush tree-lined fairways and naturally undulating terrain that doesn’t permit you to spray the ball all over. The cleverly contoured Mini-Verde Bermuda greens will test any golfer no matter how good they are. Each hole presents a fresh, new look, and many demand skillful shot-making into and around meticulously manicured greens.

The Valley at Eastport Golf Course plays 6,232 yards from the Blue Tees with a 68.6 course rating and a slope of 134. There are a total of 4 tee boxes:  White (5,545/66.9/125), Gold (5,016/64.5/119), and Red Tees (4,698 yards, 64.5/118). There is only one par 5 on each side, hence the par of 70. Arguably, Number 18 at 468 yards plays like a par 5 for most golfers.

Number 1 is a 359-yard, straightaway par 4 with a lone pine tree on the right side of the fairway. It’s just far enough for most players that, if you push your tee shot right, it’s going to come into play. There’s a lot of mounding in the fairways that can lead to the dreaded uneven lie. Two bunkers protect the front.

At 366 yards from the Blue tee, Number 2 is another medium length par 4. It’s another relatively straight hole with a lot of mounding. The long, narrow green is slightly elevated and fronted with a cluster of bunkers.

Number 3 is a short, 338-yard par 4 that requires accuracy rather than length of the tee. The pin is barely visible off the tee because of the island of bushes and shrubbery, which makes it feel like a slight dogleg right. There’s water all down the right side but if you play your tee shot down the tree line on the left side with a slight fade, you’ll leave a short pitch shot into an elevated green that is wider than it is deep. Par is a good score on this tricky little hole.

The par 3 holes at the Valley at Eastport Golf Club are challenging and all involve water. All four par-3s features greens that are set at the same angle, front left to back right.

Number 7 is the longest at 190 yards from the Blue tees and although the water shouldn’t come into play, for many it does. Sand guards the right side in the form of two separate bunkers.

Number 4 is a challenging 160-yard par 3. The green is angled and surrounded by water. Finding the green off the tee can be a challenge, especially if the wind is blowing.

Although it’s the shortest hole on the course at 137 yards from the Blue Tees, Number 13 is by no means the easiest. That tribute belongs to the 15th hole. It’s all carry over water and if you miss the green left, you’re most likely wet. Miss it long or short and you could easily find a bunker. Find the green off the tee and you just might make par!

Number 15 is another challenging par 3. The green sits at about the same angle as the 4th hole. It plays 175 yards from the Blue tees and requires a carry of about 125 yards over water.

Holes 17 and 18 are two finishing holes that can make or break a great round; they are incredibly long and challenging. Number 17 is a par 4 dogleg left that plays 434 yards from the Blue tees.  It requires a long drive down the right side that opens up the hole and leaves a long but unobstructed shot into the green. Anything left of the middle of the fairway will require a long approach shot over trees. Either way, you’ll need to carry the large pond that fronts the green. Hit it right of the green and you’ll most likely find the bunker.

In my mind, Number 18 should be a par 5. As it is, it’s a 468-yard par 4 (I’ve played par 5s that are shorter). A great drive is still going to leave at least 225 yards, most of which is over water. The way I played it was driver, 9-iron short of the water, and pitching wedge over the water to the green. Pull your tee shot left and you could easily find one of the three bunkers. Par – or even bogey – is a good way to end your round.

Last Word: For the most part, the greens are small and require accurately hit approach shots. Before your round, warm up on Valley at Eastport’s chipping and putting green. If you’re not hitting your short irons and you have trouble with your short game, you may have some problems. The speed of the practice putting green mirrors what you’ll experience on the course.  If you need to hit a few balls to loosen up, there’s a driving range just across the street at Harbour View. There are several blind shots, so take a moment to drive ahead and see exactly what’s in store.

The 6th tee box offers a great view of the historical Governor’s Lighthouse. This lighthouse was built in 1984 by Governor Richard Riley to honor all of South Carolina’s past and present governors and stands at the end of Coquina Harbor. The Valley at Eastport is the only golf course in the area with such a view.

They are also only one of a handful of courses with live oaks throughout the golf course and sycamore tree between the 15th and 16th holes that are probably a couple of hundred years old. These Sycamore trees are featured in the club’s logo.

The Valley at Eastport’s goal is to provide you with a quality experience, exceptional service, and a comfortable, friendly atmosphere. Inside the clubhouse, the Valley at Eastport has a well-stocked pro shop that features some of the best equipment and apparel available. The Valley at Eastport offers several membership plans including one designed specifically for non-residents. Other memberships include golf and social memberships, single and family memberships, and junior membership. Call General Manager Bill Jones for more information or visit their website at www.valleyateastport.com.

Pro V1s Radio Capture Balls

Making use of a Trackman inside, whether honing your swing, undergoing a sophisticated club fitting, or “playing” simulator games, capturing the ball spin rate has always been a measurement of what is considered unacceptable variability and error. The amount of spin effects other important factors such as carry distance, descent angle and trajectory height.

Spin numbers are important especially for better players to maximize distance and control and until now the best way to ensure spin rates reported by the Trackman unit indoors were accurate was to paste small, shiny markers on the ball. Now Titleist has come up with a better solution working with engineers from Trackman by adding radar reflective strips between the cover and the mantle of the two most played balls on the professional tours, Pro V1 and Pro V1x.

“Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x RCT golf balls combine the game’s greatest combination of speed, spin, and feel with new technology that more consistently captures precision performance and golf ball data from TrackMan units used in an indoor setting,” said Jeremy Stone, Vice President, Titleist Golf Ball Marketing. “We have worked closely with TrackMan for more than two years to optimize this embedded radar reflective, patent pending technology. The result is a reliably strong ‘signal’ that enables spin capture on all shots.”

Tagged as RCT for Radar Capture Technology, the new Pro V1 RCTs and Pro V1x RCT will be in stores Nov. 3, 2021, for $64.99 per dozen.

PUTTR is the World’s First App-Enabled Smart Putting Green That Allows Golfers to Connect and Compete Worldwide

Live on Indiegogo, PUTTR is a smart, connected putting green with app, single & multiplayer games and next-gen stats.

Los Angeles United States – October 25, 2021 /MarketersMEDIA/ —

PUTTR, the revolutionary new smart putting green that lets golfers stay connected and compete in multiplayer golf events worldwide, is live on Indiegogo and a bonafide crowdfunding success story having raised over $100,000 in less than a week.

‘Drive for show and putt for dough’, goes the age old golf adage. During an average round putting takes up 42% of golf shots so it’s one skill that can make or break a score. There have long been indoor putting greens in executive suites worldwide, but for the first time ever, PUTTR is introducing the world’s first smart, app-enabled golfing green to make practice both engaging and fun.

“A few years ago, my wife and I had our first son, and, naturally, I wanted to get him into golf right away. So, I took the Earl Woods (Tiger’s dad) approach, and started working with him at the hole and moving backwards. I wanted to make sure he knew how important putting was,” says founder Matt Allard on the inspiration behind the project. “Getting to a course was challenging with his age and our schedule, so I bought one of those home putting mats so we could play and practice. After he would go to sleep, I would hit a few putts, but get bored almost immediately and fold it up and put it away. I figured there had to be a better way to practice putting, make it fun and gamified, but also give me feedback on where I was making, missing and needed to improve. That’s when PUTTR was born.”

PUTTR is unlike any other putting green on the market because of its integrated computer vision technology through the green’s connected camera. This enables detailed analysis of every putt to give the user feedback on where they need improvement. The technology also seamlessly connects to the PUTTR app via Bluetooth to guide the user through games, drills and competitions. PUTTR measures both to give the user feedback on not only misses and makes, but where they are making and missing from every distance, short, long, left, right. A profile feature allows users to track their stats, progress over time, see their achievements and receive customized games and drills based on where the system determines the golfer needs practice.

PUTTR also makes for a fun game night in with the family. Playing games allows players of all skill levels to enjoy putting, from detailed practice routines to arcade style games like Cricket, Pop-A-Shot, Skee-Ball, HORSE and more. Interactive leaderboards allow users to see how they compare to their friends and earn bragging rights. Soon golfers will also be able to play for real money, so people can really “putt for dough.”

“Currently the ‘at-home putting mat’ market is basically just a carpet with a hole. There is no gamification, analysis, or feedback that actually helps people improve,” adds Allard. “Gamification in practice is so important because it not only makes practice much more fun and engaging, but it also simulates pressure so that it translates to competition on the course.”

PUTTR is currently live and available to support on Indiegogo: www.indiegogo.com/projects/puttr-smart-putting-green
