WYNTK:
The hyper steel face of the G425 irons have a variable thickness similar to the face of metal woods and combined with the construction of the sole and top rail, which act like a hinge, improve ball speed and spin. Ping says the benefits are seen in both distance and control and with the perimeter weighting make for a playable, forgiving iron that should attract golfers with a range of skill levels.

G425s also from Ping lab testing have a 3% higher MOI than the preceding G410s and dispersion is tighter. The cavity badge is made of three pieces and is larger helping to cut down on impact vibration and contributing to a solid feel.

Ping also makes them available in the Power Spec Loft (5-iron 22°, pitching wedge 42.5°) if additional distance is a factor in selection without having to bend the hosels.

G425 Crossovers are similarly weighted and have a thinner maraging steel face than the preceding model Crossover with a 6.5% increase in MOI or resistance to twisting. Available in lofts of 2, 3 and 4 irons they are meant to fill in between irons and fairway woods for those that favor hitting irons rather than hybrids.

Ping’s G425 Drivers

WYNTK:
Ping had solid winners with the previous G410 and G400 drivers and the new G425 series hopes to continue the great results. As with the previous models the new series has three different versions to serve three different types of golfers.

The G425 MAX is the primary model in the series and will suit most players. It features an extremely high MOI the company says is the highest they have ever achieved. MOI is a measurement of the head’s resistance to twisting when impact is towards the heel or toe making it critical for average swingers who have trouble hitting in the sweet spot every time.

Revisions to the Dragonfly crown configuration allowed engineers to make the sliding weight at the rear of the head even heftier, 26-grams total, which helps adjust ball flight and improve the driver’s forgiveness.

The G425 LST (Low Spin Technology) model has a slightly smaller clubhead and meant for use by better players, those with high swing speeds, and uses a 17-gram movable weight. The head is designed to produce lower ball spin, a key to more distance, and testing shows about 200 rpm less than the previous G410 LST and 500-700 less than stablemate G425 MAX.

G425 SFT (Straight Flight Technology) is designed to help those with a pronounced left to right slice and does not have a sliding weight but rather a 23-gram fixed weight near the heel giving the SFT 25 yards more draw bias than the G425 MAX when its movable weight is positioned towards the heel.

“The Tour response to the G425 driver has been exceptional,” said John Solheim Ping’s president. “It started with a win its first week on the European Tour in the hands of Tyrrell Hatton at the BMW PGA Championship and has continued with wins around the world ever since. Viktor Hovland claimed the Mayakoba Golf Classic in early December with the G425 LST and one week later the U.S. Women’s Open champion also relied on the new driver. In all, the G425 driver already has six wins to its name, helping earn titles on all the major tours around the world. The players are instantly attracted to the clean, premium look of the clubs and even more impressed with the performance.”

Cypresswood Country Club – Once Again Central Florida’s Best Golf Value

Back in 1974 when award-winning golf course designer Ron Garl built Cypresswood Country Club in Winter Haven, FL, not too far from his hometown of Lakeland, it was the talk of the town. Golfers from all over Florida would converge on the course to see what it was all about and during the winter months, tee times were at a premium.

The course has always been in good shape and didn’t require anything other than routine maintenance with no major changes other than a greens renovation in 2000. That was until last year when Operator Bob Schade – who started working at Cypresswood as a golf cart attendant in 1986 and has been a mainstay ever since – and the board of directors of the Community Association decided to give the course a makeover in 2017.  They started with an all-new irrigation system in 2018 and then a major facelift in the summer of 2020.

Sadler Site Work was chosen as the contractor and did all of the construction.   Schade and his team spent a lot of time on the shaping of the greens to make Cypresswood the most golfer friendly course in the area.  Ron Garl would occasionally show up at the course and give Schade and his team some advice and suggestions.

The pandemic that started last spring enabled them to get a lot of work done in a much shorter period of time since there was little to no play on the golf course. Nevertheless, operations were shut down in May.  All 18 greens were rebuilt and replanted with TifEagle grass, tee boxes were laser leveled, and bunkers were expanded and flattened; everything geared toward making the course a lot more player-friendly. The focus of this redesign is clear: Hit the shot that the architect intended. In November of 2020, Cypresswood Country Club had its grand reopening. In comparing the course then and now, it is night and day; the course is a lot greener and although the fairways are still growing, it’s a lot plusher than before.

If you’ve played here before, you’ve probably noticed some of the changes, like the coquina-shelled parking area left of the greenside bunker on #8 and the pathway that goes through it.

Number 12 has a completely new look from the White and Gold Tee boxes. The fairway bunker on the right has been greatly enlarged and should come into play more often especially for those trying to cut the corner of this dogleg right par 4. The fairway bunker on the left side was also enlarged.

To me, 17 and 18 are still two holes that can make or break your round. Number 17 is a slight dogleg left par 4 that plays 376 yards from the White tees. Push your tee shot too far right and you can easily find the road, there are fairway bunkers on either side that come into play more often than not. A good drive will leave a short iron or wedge into an elevated green that features a lot of undulation and is well protected by bunkers.

Number 18 is also a dogleg left that plays 402 yards. Hit your drive too far or push it right and you can easily find the water; the fairway bunker on the left has been known to ruin some good scores too. Hit your drive out over the bunkers and you’ll be left with an approach shot of about 150 yards into a relatively flat, long narrow green that is protected with bunkers on either side. The slope that was in the middle of the 18th green was flattened to create more pin placements.

Number 3 has always been one of my favorite holes. This dogleg right par 5 plays 531 yards from the White tees. Water can come into play on the right side off the tee. Trees line both sides of the fairway off the tee and on your layup shot, so hit something you can control. Your approach shot is into a relatively flat, slightly elevated green that falls off on the left side There’s a lot of mounding around the green and a large bunker on the right.

After your round, stop by the Cypresswood Pub. They have all of your favorite adult beverages including ice-cold draft beer, house wines, and mixed drinks, and some of the best clubhouse food in the area. The menu is pretty basic but let me tell you, they have some of the best chicken wings I have ever had and their burgers are second to none. It’s no wonder golfers and non-golfers alike can be found at the Pub for lunch and dinner enjoying some great food!.

Membership at Cypresswood is easy and affordable. There’s no initiation fee – which is surprising with all the money that has recently been put into the facility – and you don’t have to live within this gated community. Best of all, there aren’t a lot of choices, no social memberships, junior memberships out-of-state memberships, or senior memberships to choose from; you’re either a resident of the community or you’re not. Non-residents pay a flat fee of $300 per month for an individual ($450 for a family). Residents pay $250/$375. For that, you’ll receive unlimited cart fees, greens fees, and range balls. Plus you can make tee times up to 14 days in advance. If you prefer to use your own cart, you can do that without an added trail fee; just show proof of liability insurance. That’s it. No food and beverage minimum – although the food is terrific – no pro shop minimum, etc. It’s the best membership value in Central Florida!

There have been a lot of improvements to the golf course and the clubhouse at Cypresswood. The pro shop has a good selection of logoed golf apparel and equipment from PUMA and Cobra as well as several upcoming Cobra Demo Days on the range. And, as always, Bob Schade is available to help fix your swing or answer any questions you may have about the club. For more information, visit their website at www.cypresswoodcc.com.

WYNTK:
The popularity of the previous Apex irons offered two years ago prompted Callaway Golf to update the family and include in addition to the Standard and Pro models, a new game-improvement iron under the tag DCB.

Each of the three versions take advantage of a face cup, Callaway’s Flash Face, which was designed using their supercomputer and artificial-intelligence software. In addition to improving the spin characteristics across the entire face, from heel to toe and bottom to top, A.I. allowed individual lofts to each have their own configuration with the goal of maximizing ball speeds for more distance.

The flagship of the family is the Apex 21 with what the marketing department calls a “21st century forging” and though categorized as a players-distance iron, they should be playable by a wide range of handicaps. The internal Tungsten Energy Core of up to 64 grams runs across the bottom and is split between the toe, middle and heel. This is five times the amount of the corresponding Apex 19 loft iron and serves to improve launch plus provide more forgiveness when impact is not in the center of the face. The now familiar urethane microspheres are also inside to absorb vibration which improves the iron’s feel plus the sole’s leading edge was reshaped for less turf drag.

Apex Pro 21 players-category irons are for those scratch and single digit golfers looking for more distance and spin control while also getting a somewhat easier to hit iron rather than a pure blade. The construction is a hollow body that uses the A.I. Flash Face Cup in the 3- through 7-iron and a face plate in the 8-iron through A-wedge. As with the Apex 21s the Pro model has tungsten weighting varying by loft, for example 90 grams in the 7-iron, plus makes use of the urethane microspheres. Callaway is quick to point out combo sets of the Standard and Pro make a lot of sense and in fact a stock combo set is available (Standard 3 through 7 and Pro 8 through A wedge) though any combination is available.

The newbie of the family is the game-improvement Apex DCB (Deep Cavity Back) with a lot more offset than the Standards, a distinctly wider sole and a relatively deep cavity back that pushes weight out towards the perimeter. DCBs are targeted for use by those wanting a forged iron but needing more help launching the ball properly. Not meant to be a direct competitor to Callaway’s Big Bertha cast irons released earlier, the DCBs are a good alternative for higher handicappers wanting to play a forged iron. Mixed or combo sets are also a good possibility using the DCB’s for the lower lofts rather than hybrids.

WYNTK:
For several years Callaway Golf has manufactured the most-played hybrids and the new Apex 21s combine the best of what was learned with cutting edge software. Making use of their supercomputer and artificial intelligence machine learning they designed the new Flash Face SS221 and internal rods connecting the crown and sole. The company says the combination of the face and these Jailbreak rods produce more ball speed with the rods stiffening the head and directing more energy to the ball.

Weighting is concentrated in the sole and the center back providing both forgiveness on imperfect impacts and a tendency for high launch. The regular Apex 21 hybrid also offers increased versatility of ball flight control with its adjustable hosel.

The Apex 21 Pro has a much smaller head than the regular model having the compact look at address favored by better players in hybrids. Callaway says both shaping and placement of the center of gravity are similar to the previous Apex 16 model. The Pro shares the A.I. Flash Face and Jailbreak Rods features with the regular Apex 21s but have a forged 455 steel face. According to the company, Tour pros and better amateurs will appreciate the iron-like control and workability of the Pro with the clean lines and fixed hosel.

Lacoste: Apparel for Multiple Sports Activities

The fine folks at Lacoste recently sent us some of their “golf appropriate” apparel. While they do offer a complete line of men’s and women’s golf apparel, I use this phraseology because what we have found is that a lot of their apparel is appropriate for a variety of sports.

Lacoste got their start in the world of tennis. Tennis professional Rene Lacoste founded the company in 1933 and introduced a green crocodile as the brand’s logo. (his nickname was The Crocodile because of his ferocity on the tennis court). As you can imagine, much of their apparel is geared towards tennis. Which is a good thing. A lot of their apparel is suitable for both sports – tennis and golf. Let’s start with the Women’s SPORT Breathable Stretch Tennis Polo.  This collarless garment was inspired by the streamlined look of a wetsuit. It is ultra-breathable and is sewn from a stretch jersey fabric and features transparent ventilating mesh panels on the sleeves. The zipped banana collar has contrast piping and the smooth-glide zipper runs along the placket. There’s Lacoste branding in middle of back and a green crocodile transfer on chest. It’s available in Euro-sizes 32 – 46.

A new take on women’s golf apparel is Lacoste’s Striped Polo. The polo’s slim striping details outline the classic shape of this easy-fitting textured piqué polo. This textured pique garment is trimmed with contrasting ribbed finishes at the bottom of the sleeves and buttons that fasten down the back. The Women’s Striped Polo is available in Euro-sizes 32 – 46 and in Black/White and Red/White.

Another great ladies’ garment is the Women’s SPORT Ultra Dry Geometric Print Performance Polo, available in two stunning color combos: Navy Blue/Turquoise/Blue/White, or Orange/Purple/Red/White. It’s sewn in a breathable ultra-dry stretch jersey fabric with an open ribbed polo collar which adds a touch of femininity. The graphic print on the chest along with the green crocodile transfer identify the brand. It’s available in Euro-sizes 32 – 46.

Lacoste continues to be a trendsetter and the Women’s “Made in France” Cotton Pique Polo Dress leads the way when it comes to trendy golf apparel. This garment is a take on tie-dye which makes this straight-cut polo dress – sewn in cotton caviar piqué – irresistible. It features a ribbed polo collar and ribbed finishes at the end of each sleeve. The Cotton Pique Polo Dress has a recycled embroidered green crocodile and organic cotton crafting, making it environmentally-friendly. The “Made in France” Cotton Pique Polo Dress is available in euro-sizes S – XL and in Flashy Yellow/White, or Red/Pink/White, or Navy Blue/Blue/White.

When things cool down, you need something to keep you warm on the course and the Women’s SPORT V-neck Sweater is the answer. This elegant Lacoste Sport sweater is sewn in breathable stretch cotton so you’ll stay cool and comfortable under the pressure of the game thanks to Coolmax technology. The ribbed V-neck collar and ribbed finishes at bottom of garment and sleeve ends add a unique look and the green crocodile transfer on the chest let’s everyone know your favorite brand. It’s available in Euro-sizes 32 – 44 and in a brilliant orange color.

Another beautiful Women’s sweater is the Recycled Cashmere V-neck Golf Sweater. The raglan sleeves, striped ribbed V-neck, and ribbed finishes at the wristbands and bottom of the garment make this environmentally-friendly piece extremely functional, comfortable, and warm. Contrasting stripes at the bottom of this must-have complete the sporty chic look. It’s available in Euro-sizes 32 – 44 and in 2 color combos: Navy Blue/White/Red or White/Yellow/Green. You’ll look and feel great styling down the fairway with the embroidered green crocodile on the chest!

The Women’s Signature Wide Hooded Fleece Sweatshirt is a cotton blend fleece sweatshirt that hits its mark with the Lacoste signature in puff print on the chest. With a modern, loose fit, drawstring hood and kangaroo pocket, it’s a sportswear must for any wardrobe. It’s available in sizes XS – XL and only in White.

There’s a lot for guys too. Lacoste’s Men’s Motion Colorblock Crew Neck Sweatshirt delivers uncompromised comfort and style while delivering warmth. This thick cotton blend fleece features a tubular crew neck with raglan sleeves and ribbed wristbands at the bottom of the garment. The tri-color colorblock design with a contrasting single zippered pocket and silicone crocodile on the chest identify the brand. Look good and stay warm in the Colorblock Crew Neck Sweatshirt. It’s available in sizes S – 4XL and in 2 colors including Navy Blue/Grey/Navy Blue.

Imagine your favorite golf polo with long sleeves and a crocodile on the chest. Now it’s a reality: the Lacoste Men’s Long-Sleeve Classic Fit L.12.12 Polo. The recognizable thick cotton piqué material with ribbed collar and armbands brings a classic chic yet casual touch to your everyday outfits. The two-button placket, mother-of-pearl buttons, and the classic fit are pure Lacoste. And, as always, the crocodile logo on the chest lets everyone know your favorite brand. This new long-sleeve polo is available in sizes XXS – 4XL and in 6 colors: White, Black, Red, Blue, Green, and Bordeaux.

Another functional long-sleeve garment that’s great for the golf course is the Men’s SPORT Breathable Golf Polo Shirt. It features raglan sleeves and a breathable ultra-dry stretch jersey material. The three-button ribbed polo collar and contrasting placket give this well-crafted garment a classic look. The breathability make this a perfect choice for guys looking for a little extra sun protection. There’s an embroidered Croc logo on the chest. The SPORT Breathable Polo is available in sizes S – 4XL and in Black.

The Men’s SPORT Water-Resistant Hooded Zip-Up Jacket gets you ready for anything, no matter what the weather is outside. This sleek rain jacket comes in a diamond-patterned performance fabric with a hood, mesh lining and logo lettering encircling the sleeves. The diamond taffeta is a smooth, very light weaved fabric with a slightly shiny finish and it’s water-resistant. The ergonomic hem and elasticized finishes at the bottom of garment keep you warm and dry and the slant zip pockets and interior zip pocket do the same for your valuables. There’s a green crocodile logo emblazoned on the chest.

Every great top needs a bottom and Lacoste’s Sport Fleece Track Pants are perfect whether you’re an athlete in training or just lounging around the living room. They feature an elasticized waistband and leg bottoms and a drawstring closure. The cotton blend brushed fleece fabric will keep you warm and toasty and the crocodile logo on the right leg identifies the brand. The Sport Fleece Track Pants are available in sizes S – 4XL and in several colors.

SanSoleil Golf Apparel – Sun Protection and a Whole Lot More

SanSoleil is best known for their sun protection golf apparel, particularly long sleeve polos and outerwear pieces. Many of the pieces in the SanSoleil collection are available in a wide array of bright, vibrant colors and fun prints such as Americana, Golf Cart Blue, Carlyle Pink, Snow Leopard Capri,  Lady Luck Red, and Cosmos Blue just to name a few.

Tunica Mississippi – Golf, Gambling, and The Blues

Located in the Mississippi Delta, 30 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee, the town of Tunica, MS is truly a “rags to riches” economic development success story. For years Tunica was recognized as the most impoverished city in the country; the neighborhood known as “Sugar Ditch Alley” was recognized as America’s most deprived neighborhood.

That all changed in the early 1990s when the casino industry hit the area and legalized gambling put Tunica on the map. Tunica quickly became the third-largest gaming destination in the United States, trailing only behind Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Currently, there are 6 casinos in the area – known as Tunica Resorts – and although most of the population still resides outside the city limits of Tunica, thousands of locals are employed by the casinos.

Tunica is located 25 miles from the intersection of I-55 and I-40 putting it within an easy day’s drive to 2/3rd’s of America’s population. People from near and far to try their luck at a myriad of slot machines and table games at the area’s six casinos.

While the allure of gambling and the possibility of greatly increasing one’s net worth is the draw for many visitors, there is plenty to do outside of the casinos. If you’re into music, you’ve come to the right place; if you like the blues, even better. The state of Mississippi is known as the “Birthplace of America’s Music.” The Mississippi Delta is where the Blues began and is home to the King of the Blues B.B. King and the King of Rock n’ Roll Elvis Presley.

The Gateway to the Blues Museum is located at the Visitor’s Center on Highway 61 and is the first attraction many people see when they roll into Tunica. The building itself dates back to around 1895 and was once a train depot. The staff inside can provide you with a lot more information about this as well as directions, advice and the latest information about events, and attractions. If you need a hotel room or help in making dinner reservations they can help with that as well.

The Gateway to the Blues Museum is a must-see attraction for all music lovers and tells the story of how the blues was born. Another blues attraction is The Mississippi Blues Trail which is the state’s tribute to this truly American music genre. The trail consists of 120 historical markers throughout Mississippi, and each marker tells a story about a person, place, or event essential to the creation of the Blues. The plaque outside the Visitor’s Center tells the role that Tunica played in helping to grow the blues, with references to the Abbay & Leatherman Plantation, Eddie James “Son” House, Harold “Hardface” Clanton, James Cotton, and the Hollywood Café. More about the latter later.

If you enjoy a round of golf on a challenging course, Tunica has a couple of options. For about what it costs for a couple of spins on a high stakes slot machine, you can play on one of two courses: Tunica National Golf & Tennis or River Bend Links.

Tunica National Golf & Tennis Club

The topography in this part of the Mississippi Delta is pretty flat, but Tunica National Golf & Tennis Club has made the most of it. The course was designed by Mark McCumber and features Champion Bermuda greens that are large and receptive, gently rolling zoysia fairways and six sets of tee boxes. Tunica National winds its way around several lakes and strands of pine trees and features bunkers that are well-maintained with a lot of character with high faces and a rugged look.

None of the par 5s are what I would consider reachable in two, at least from the Blue tees or longer, and each side ends with the toughest hole of that nine. The course’s #1 handicap is Number 9, which plays 415 yards from the back tees with water down the right side and bunkers in the narrow landing area. Success off the tee will leave a mid-iron into a well-protected green with sand and water on the right.

To me, the #2 handicap, Number 18 was more challenging. It’s a 443-yards par 4 dogleg left with water looming in the landing area off the tee. The hole gets longer when you have to hit less than driver off the tee and leaves a longer approach. The green has a lot of undulation and is guarded by two bunkers in front. It is a really challenging finishing hole.

Tunica National has a very impressive practice facility many players come here just to hone their game. There’s a 360° driving range where you can hit every club in the bag, a separate short game area, and practice putting green. After your round, stop by the lounge for your favorite adult beverage or a bite to eat. The food is fantastic and the staff friendly.

River Bend Golf Links

I realize that to be considered a true “links” golf course a large body of water needs to be involved and although the mighty Mississippi River is nearby, I don’t think it counts.  That said, River Bend Golf Links is the closest thing I’ve encountered to a links course outside of Scotland. The bunkering on each hole gives it a rugged look and a Scottish feel, and when the wind is blowing, even more so. Although the course is a shadow of its former self, the greens are in great shape and the course is a lot of fun to play, regardless of how good you are. According to General Manager Chris Conklin, many of the bunkers will be filled in soon; they are just too maintenance-intensive. So, if you’d like to get a feel of what it’s like to play in the Home of Golf without the expense of airfare and the hassle of a passport, give River Bend Links a try.

Visitors to the Tunica area have a lot of choices when it comes to selecting a place to lay their heads at night. MGM Resorts International’s Gold Strike Casino Resort seems to offer the best value when it came to rooms and dining options and their world-class casino. Our suite had a king-size bed, large, flat-screen TVs in both rooms, ample sitting area, and a master bathroom with an air jet tub. For breakfast, I highly recommend the buffet at the Buffet Americana, they offer everything you could dream of for breakfast. For dinner, you won’t find a better steak in town than what they serve at the Wine Spectator award-winning Chicago Steakhouse; their seafood dishes are delicious too! And be sure to check out the dessert menu.

If you’re looking to get a casual bite to eat while at the Gold Strike, check out their newest offering, BetMGM Book, Bar & Grill. MGM invested $7 million in what they believe is the future of gambling: the sportsbook. BetMGM opened Mississippi’s first sportsbook on August 1, 2018, 26 years to the day after legalized betting launched in the state. In addition to great food and drink, BetMGM features more than 60 HD screens including a giant video wall, expansive bar, three-meal dining, sportsbook, VIP lounge, lively entertainment, and the Mid-South’s first Topgolf Swing Suite.

For those who want to escape the glitter and bright neon lights for a down-home southern meal, head over to The Hollywood Café. We’ve all heard the saying “You can’t judge a book by its cover,” and nowhere does that apply more than The Hollywood Café in Tunica. The building looks very dilapidated and run down – it was once an old farm commissary. In addition to serving some of the best deep-fried dill pickles in the state, The Hollywood Café also shares in the area’s rich musical history. Pianist Muriel Wilkins performed there for years, and she and the Hollywood Café were immortalized in Marc Cohn’s hit song “Walking in Memphis.” Many other blues legends have graced the stage of The Hollywood Café. When The Hollywood Cafe originally opened in the summer of ’69, there was no stage or food, just a bar. Over the years the café began to offer dinnertime music and a menu evolved that included steak, catfish, and their signature dish, fried dill pickles! The menu is vast and you won’t leave hungry…or broke; everything is very reasonably priced.

PXG’s Economy-Priced 0211 Family of Clubs

A lot has changed since January 2015 when Bob Parsons, the founder of GoDaddy.com introduced, Parsons Xtreme Golf and a line of ultra-expensive clubs. How expensive? In case it has slipped your mind a full bag of the initial models would set you back more than $5,000.

Parsons was called foolish, a dreamer and a disruptor but six years later he and his company are still in the market and still producing premium priced clubs with premium materials and design. The question is are they worth it and of course that’s an individual decision but it does seem PXG is having some new thoughts about growing their business and the premium pricing of their products.

This has been evident for a few months with discounts of clubs both on their website and at their authorized retailers, but the newest club family introduction has moved PXG from the top of the price spectrum to nearly the bottom. For example, the 2021 0211 Driver is listed for $375 but discounted to $295. By comparison, a 2021 Callaway Golf Big Bertha B-21 lists for $500 and there is no discount nor is there one for this year’s Cobra Golf’s Radspeed driver carrying a retail of $449.

Many times, we have brought our readers attention to the pricing strategy used by Tour Edge Golf, marketing high performance clubs at very golfer-friendly prices such as the 2021 Hot Launch E521 and C521 model drivers with price tags of $230.

Doing the math, a full bag of the new PXG 2021 0211s comes in at just over $2,000 depending on the set make up, which is quite a difference from the original pricing.

The question then has PXG forsaken the ultra-premium pricing which meant competition with the largest equipment companies such as Callaway, Titleist, TaylorMade and Cobra or are they looking to go against less pricey competition? Interesting to contemplate and it may simply be PXG trying to expand the breadth of potential customers. One clue may be publicity for the new line uses the tag line, “The Science of Sexy.”

Bayou DeSiard Country Club – Louisiana’s Best Country Club Value

Bayou DeSiard Country Club is a special club in Monroe, LA. In addition to having a Perry Maxwell-designed golf course, Bayou DeSiard is home to the W.E. Cole Cotton States Amateur, one of the best practice facilities in the state, and numerous dining options.

Bayou DeSiard Country Club was incorporated in 1945 and on Labor Day 1948, the club opened as a 9-hole golf course. Bayou DeSiard was built on land donated by the Biedenharn family and was developed by charter members who donated their time, equipment, and materials for construction at cost. A few years later, additional land was purchased and the second nine was built.

The 18-hole championship golf course designed by Perry Maxwell opened in 1948, Ron Prichard did a restoration in 2009 and returned the course to Mr. Maxwell’s challenging and enjoyable layout that you see today. Bayou DeSiard Country Club is repeatedly ranked one of the top courses in the South. From the Championship tees, the course plays 7,234 yards with a course rating of 74.5 and a slope of 131. In all, there are 6 tee boxes with yardages as short as 4,340 as well as two “blended” tees (Black/Blue and Blue/Gold) for a total of 7 yardages. Odds are there’s one to suit your game.

The golf course at Bayou DeSiard Country Club features tree-lined fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and water on 10 holes. Lush fairways planted with 419 Bermuda grass give way to beautiful mini Verdi greens. For the most part, fairways are open and receptive off the tee and there is a lot of undulation in the greens. The first three holes feature water left of the green, so if hitting it left is part of your game, get it out of your system on the practice range. The course is easy to walk Director of Golf Nick Ellison estimates that about 85% of their winter rounds are golfers walking the course.

Speaking of practice facilities, golf course architect Nathan Crace was hired to rejuvenate Bayou DeSiard’s. The club had invested several years ago in three practice greens that were known as the “Triangle,” and could be used for target shots up to 170 yards, but what was missing was a chipping green. One of the greens was converted to a 6,000 sq ft chipping as part of the new short game complex. There is also a full-length driving range where you can hit every club in your bag as well as a practice putting green. It’s one of the biggest selling points of the club.

Bayou DeSiard Country Club has several memorable holes, one of which is the par 5, 6th. The hole plays 495 yards from the White Tees and will require some strategic play if you want to be successful. There’s water down the right side that meanders out into the fairway farther than you think and you’ll find that the closer you get to the green, you’re going to have to carry it over the water to get on. The green is long and narrow with lots of undulation and is protected on the right with water and on the left with sand. Oh, and there’s a railway track that runs down the left side. If you find yourself on the tracks, best to use your partner’s club to hit out! It’s just a fun golf hole!

To me, Number 10 is the most interesting hole on the golf course. If I were naming holes it would be called “Redheaded Stepchild,” with no offense to my auburn-haired friends. It’s a hole that just doesn’t seem to fit in with the rest of the course. The hole plays 407 yards and is a huge dogleg left that just keeps turning left. Trees line the left side and there are several pot bunkers at the corner that need to be carried off the tee, otherwise, the trees will block you out. Depending on the tees you play, your best bet is to hit a club that will put you over the traps and leave yourself a short pitch shot into a large green that slopes left to right.

Number 15 is a short, fun, little par 3 that plays 116 yards from the Gold tees. According to the scorecard, it’s the easiest hole on the course. It’s all carry over water into an odd-shaped green that is a lot wider than it is deep. A shot from the bunker behind the green at a front pin placement can be treacherous. A front left pin placement can be tricky as well as the green slopes down towards the water. Back right is no fun either as the landing area near the pin is tiny. It may be the shortest hole on the course but par is a good score here!

Bayou DeSiard’s easiest hole is followed by the inward nine’s toughest, the par 5 16th. From the Blue Tees, the hole plays 524 yards. From a distance, the bunkers that appear to be guarding the green are about 100 yards out so play your layup shot accordingly. There is one greenside bunker on the right, three on the left, and railroad tracks that guard the right side.

In addition to one of the area’s best golf facilities, Bayou DeSiard has an impressive tennis facility with 7 lighted courts – 2 hydro courts and 5 hard courts.  The hydro court system is the most advanced clay court watering system available. Several of the courts include lines for pickleball, the nation’s fastest-growing sport among active adults. The onsite tennis shop can set you up with new equipment or outfit your current gear with new strings and grips. The onsite tennis pro can also assist with making you a better player.

Great golf and tennis aren’t the only things that Bayou DeSiard Country Club is known for. They have been pampering members with an incredible variety of dining options since the 1940s. Members have access to 10 different rooms making Bayou DeSiard Country Club the perfect venue for whatever your taste-buds crave. Events are a large part of DeSiard’s social calendar and they offer a bevy of catering options and a stunning array of menu items for all occasions. One of their many dining areas is the perfect spot for your weddings, private dinner parties, or business events. Or just unwind after a great round of golf at the 19th hole or evening drinks at the Founders’ Bar.

This is just an overview of what Bayou DeSiard has to offer its members. If you ever get the chance to visit the club and play the course, don’t pass up the opportunity. Director of Golf Nick Ellison and his staff have created a club that is family friendly and affordable. Give them a call at (318) 323-5136 or visit them online at www.bayoudesiardcc.com.

Amelia River Club – A Northeast Florida Golf Staple

Amelia River Golf Club is located on Amelia Island, just north of Jacksonville and within minutes of the historic town of Fernandina Beach. It’s recognized as one of the most prestigious courses in all of North Florida and a favorite of both local golfers and visitors to the Amelia Island area. There are several reasons for this. One is that the course is always in pristine condition, from the manicured fairways to the sculpted bunkers. The second is the smooth TifEagle greens which roll fast and true. But what seems to set Amelia Island River Club apart from other public access courses in the area is the staff, some of the friendliest and most knowledgeable people I have ever met in the golf industry.

This Tom Jackson designed championship course plays to 6,808 yards from the back tees with a course rating of 74 and a slope of 139. I found that the White/Blue Tees (6,082/70.4/1310 provided a challenge and still let me leave with a little dignity. Five sets of tees plus a couple of blended yardages produce lengths that golfers of all abilities will enjoy. Whether you’re a true beginner or a single-digit handicapper, the course will challenge golfers of all skill levels.

Amelia River Club is a course that is going to reward brains over brawn. Although the course is long enough that you’ll have ample opportunity to hit driver out here, it’s all about ball control and accuracy if you want to score well. The course could be described as a “Links meets Parklands;” some holes are wide open and highly susceptible to the winds that often blow off the nearby water, while others feature tree-lined fairways sculpted around the forest of majestic live oaks, sable palms, pines, and wax myrtles. Water comes into play on at least thirteen holes in one way or another; creeks cross the fairway in several places and there’s a good chance you won’t know they’re there. There’s a lot of mounding on the peripheries of the fairways and around the greens, predominantly on the sides that have no bunkering and the sand traps are well-manicured. This is particularly evident on the par 5 holes. There are no houses in the course, just you, lush green fairways, and that little white ball!

There are several memorable holes out here. Amelia River starts you off with a good test, a 521-yard par 5 that for the majority of golfers is going to be a 3-shot hole. The fairway is wide open off the tee and with the airport to the left, all you need to do is steer your tee shot clear of the bunkers on the right. You’ll have to make a decision with your second shot: go for the gusto or layup. Smart money is on laying up short of the water and making a birdie with a good chip shot. A par is nothing to be ashamed of as you get started.

The second hole is not the type of golf hole you’d expect to see this close to the coast, a beautiful tree-lined Dogleg right par 4. The hole is short and plays a mere 337 yards from the Blue Tees. If you push your tee shot left, you’ll have to contend with a large oak tree in the fairway that can put a damper on an otherwise good approach shot. The green is guarded by a large, deep fairway bunker front right.

Holes 14 and 15 showcase course architect Tom Jackson’s passion for presenting golfers with risk/reward opportunities. If you’re a longball hitter, here’s your chance to make up some strokes. Number 14 is a dogleg left par 4 that plays 321 yards from the White Tees, although it’s more like a left turn than a dogleg. That being said, longball hitters will have a chance to hit it over the water and have a go at the green. The rest of us just need to hit it straight off the tee, past the corner which will leave a short to mi-iron into the green. Number 15 is a slight dogleg left that plays 309 yards and with a well-struck drive is reachable. The green is well-protected by bunkers so it might require a little luck as well.

The club’s signature hole is Number 17, a 147-yard par 3 over water into an island green. That seems to be the theme up here in northeast Florida! The triangular green if guarded front left by a small bunker. If the pin is in the front, things can get interesting! The signature 17th hole is a par three surrounded by water demanding an accurate shot to the island green which closely resembles another very famous golf hole in our area! The final hole ends at the edge of the Amelia River and its expansive tidal marsh.

With trees framing the fairway off the tee on the par 5 18th hole, the drive can be intimidating. The hole plays 478 yards and doglegs slightly to the left so favor the right side off the tee. The fairway widens in the landing area of your layup and then you’ll have a short pitch shot into an odd-shaped green that’s protected on the right by three bunkers and by trees on the left. It’s a challenging finishing hole.

Before your round, warm up on Amelia River Club’s full-length driving range where you can hit every club in the bag. If your game needs some work, talk with the friendly PGA professionals in the pro shop and schedule a lesson.

After your round, grab a bite at the River Bar and Grille, Amelia River Club’s casual grill. The menu features delicious breakfast sandwiches, burgers, and salads. It’s perfect for both a hungry golfer with a hearty appetite and a player who wants a lighter fare. You can dine inside or out depending on the weather.

If you can’t get enough of the Amelia River Club’s golf facilities, you may want to consider becoming a member. Several membership categories are available including Single and Family Full Memberships, Corporate and Social Memberships. Your monthly membership fee entitles you to reduced cart fees and no fees after 2 pm if you’re walking, unlimited greens fees and range fees, advance tee time booking, and discounts in the pro shop and restaurant.

WYNTK
Bridgestone Golf has had a nice long run with the e6 ball, since 2005, and the latest version is still targeted for players with low to medium swing speeds wanting a soft feel without sacrificing yards with the driver and less curvature because of less side spin.

“The e-Family has a lengthy, storied history at Bridgestone,” said Elliot Mellow, Golf Ball Marketing Manager – Bridgestone Golf. “The e6 is actually the longest running model in the e-Family and is our most successful two-piece Surlyn golf ball model to date. It has a significant following among moderate-speed players who demand a very soft feel with maximum distance off the tee and enhanced forgiveness on the long- and mid-irons. As a bonus it also provides incredible feel on and around the green.”

The core of the e6 is larger and softer than the previous version which allowed the cover to be thinner for better control of scoring shots around the green.
