Dunning Golf Apparel – Taking the Classic Golf Look to a New Level

2198

In 2001, Ralph Dunning revolutionized the golf industry by launching the very first apparel line comprised exclusively of performance fabrics. It’s interesting to note how Dunning got into the golf apparel industry. In 2000, he was playing golf in Hawaii, a place where it’s naturally quite hot. He went in the pro shop and purchased a traditional cotton golf shirt which, at the time, was considered “performance” in the golf industry.

dunningAt the end of his round, he discovered that the shirt was not only discolored from sweat stains, it was also drenched. After returning home, he realized the time had come to bring the technology used in creating specialized apparel in the cycling and running industries into the golf industry. He began to create golf shirts with fabrics specifically engineered for the game’s playing conditions. These proprietary technical fabrics are engineered from the yarn up, meaning performance is built in and won’t wash or wear out after repeated use.

Not too long ago, Ralph Dunning sold his company to Tharanco Lifestyles which is, in his words, a real golf company. Tharanco Lifestyles also owns the Greg Norman Collection and GN Women’s. According to Dunning, “It was a natural fit to partner with a company that has a real passion for golf, experience in the industry, and a desire to grow the game.” Today, Dunning garments are known for their clean and sophisticated aesthetics and it’s no wonder that Dunning Golf apparel is tested and trusted by the world’s greatest athletes. Dunning Golf apparel is engineered for athletes but designed for players.

The Golfin Guy was fortunate enough to receive a few pieces of this extraordinary apparel from the 2015 Spring Collection to review. Unfortunately for the ladies, Dunning only makes men’s apparel but who knows, that could change. Here are some pieces that caught our eye:

The Classic Stripe Yarn Dye Pique Polo is the player’s fabric choice when competing on hot, summer days. The yarn is mechanically stretched, giving it an ultra-soft feel, color fastness, and, most importantly in the heat – breathability. It’s offered in a classic weight and is so versatile, it can be worn on or off the course. The moisture wicking of the fabric keeps it dry where it’s in contact with the skin. The Classic Stripe Yarn Dye Pique Polo is 100% technical polyester and sports the Dunning nameplate on the right sleeve. Available in sizes S – 2XL and in four color combinations: Windsor Blue/White, Windsor Blue/Canoe, Wave/White, White/Windsor Blue

The Stretch Solid Jersey Polo is designed for players who prefer a heavier fabric over lightweight technical fabrics. The fabric is luxurious, with a real soft feel and offers four-way stretch for incredible playability and freedom of movement. In other words, you can’t attribute that bad swing to being bound by your polo! The material is 93% technical polyester and 7% Spandex. The Stretch Solid Jersey Polo also has a two-piece self-collar which helps to maintain the shape over time. This Dunning polo is both tested and trusted by the world’s greatest golfers and athletes. Keep in mind this is a regular fit polo so if you prefer a cleaner, more athletic fit, better take it down a size. Available in sizes S – 3XL and eleven colors: Canoe, Wave, Dusk, Bloom, Hastings, Sequence, White, Grey, Solar, Halo, Black.

Heritage Performance Short – Over the last two years, Dunning Golf has worked to create a fabric that offers premium performance while recognizing the understated history and heritage of the game. The Heritage Performance Short combines luxury pima cotton with proprietary technical fibers resulting in a new performance fabric with the look and feel of cotton only with premium moisture management properties. You’ll find a luxurious hand feel and next to skin comfort in this 70% Cotton, 25% Polyester Sorbtek, and 5% Spandex Twill fabric. The Heritage Performance Cotton collection offers a clean and understated styling that allows for versatility off the course. Available in waist sizes 30 – 42 and in three colors: Windsor Blue, Oyster and Khaki

The Stretch Thermal Striped 1/4 Zip delivers both insulation and breathability in a lightweight stretch fabric. If you play in an area where the climate changes on a regular basis, this is your go to piece for year round play. It features a drawstring waist for a customized fit with a trimmer fit on the sleeves for playability and feel around the greens. The material is 94% Polyester, 6% Spandex and sports the Dunning logo on the back of the neck. Available in sizes S – 2XL and in either Black or Halo.

Guide to Dunning Golf’s Color Palette: Dunning Golf has a very unique color palette that runs just about the entire length of the spectrum. Just as unique are the names of the colors. Here’s a Layman’s guide to the color palette:

Canoe – Red. Like the Florida State Seminole logo!

Wave – Light Blue

Dusk – Grayish Blue

Grey – Or Gray in the US

Bloom – Soft Pink

Hastings – Yellow

Sequence – on the Dunning spectrum, it’s the color between Wave and Dusk.

White/Black – Technically not colors, but who’s counting?

Solar – Orange

Halo – Navy Blue

Last Word: Dunning Golf offers high-quality, luxury golf apparel at a competitive price. I see the quality along the same lines as Peter Millar, Ralph Lauren Sport (RLX) and Martin Golf but with a lower price point. In scouring the Internet, there don’t seem to be any brick and mortar shops that sell their apparel, only online at www.dunninggolf.com  or other high end golf apparel cyber stores.
