Mavrik Irons for 2020 from Callaway

Callaway Golf’s run atop the iron market has lasted for five years and for 2020 they are looking to extend that streak. The big news is for the first-time engineers were able to gain the advantages of artificial intelligence (A.I.) and machine learning used for the top selling 2019 Epic Flash driver and apply it to irons, the new Mavrik irons.

The purchase of a larger supercomputer effectively doubled the capacity and pushed component design to levels conventional engineering cannot approach. This capacity allowed extending the A.I. process to the three new model irons.

Thousands of iterations were done targeting a specific set of performance goals for distance, spin and playability while factoring in dozens of variables. The resulting face configuration was tagged the Flash Face Cup and they went so far as to create different face configurations for each loft. Callaway says this is a breakthrough comparable to what they accomplished with the Epic Flash driver and point out this is the first use of A.I. and machine learning for designing irons.

Faces of the long irons are biased to provide high launch and ball speed, mid-irons speed and consistency of spin while short irons control of spin and trajectory were optimized. An internal tungsten weight helps to increase the rebound of the face therefore offering the potential of more distance. The tungsten is surrounded by urethane in the form of microspheres and besides fixing the weight’s exact location it also serves as an impact dampener, what Callaway calls the Tungsten Energy Core.

Three models will be available Jan. 23, the Mavrik, Mavrik Pro and Mavrik Max offering the choice of True Temper, Project X, and KBS shafts plus Golf Pride grips. Pricing is the same for the Mavrik and Mavrik Max, a 7-piece set is $799 with steel shafts and $899 for graphite. Mavrik Pro is $899 for a 7-piece set and only steel shafts are available.
