Miura MB001 – Pure Muscleback Power

Yoshitaka Miura is returning Miura Golf to its forged roots. For the first time in six years, Miura Golf is introducing a new blade iron – the MB001 muscleback. The MB001 will join the Tournament Blade and the Series 1957 Small Blade as just the third forged blade model in Miura’s lineup.  Miura Golf, who arguably makes ”the world’s finest forged golf clubs,” takes its time when it comes to creating new clubs. According to Company President Adam Barr
“The only calendar we operate on is the one in the minds of the Miuras.” The company also offers several cavity back iron sets along with hybrids, wedges and putters.

Yoshitaka, eldest son of Miura founder Katsuhiro Miura, led the MB001 project. Yoshitaka is a club-grinding expert who learned under his father. He was advised by his brother Shinei, who supervises forging operations at the company’s factory in Himeji, Japan, as well as his father.

According to Barr, “The MB001 contains the benefits of all the lessons we have learned in watching irons perform, since the Tournament Blade came out in 2007 and the Small Blade arrived in 2006.”

In creating the MB001 the Miuras made a few minor tweaks to the sole and the appearance at address. An improved hosel-to-leading edge blend reduces the appearance of any offset, and a more upright appearance at impact “helps players feel secure standing over the ball, allowing them to swing away with confidence,” says Miura.

The sole was slightly altered in order to improve turf interaction, giving players a better chance of keeping the clubface square at impact. There is also a bit of bounce ground into the leading edge (thanks Yoshi), making it even easier to hit off of tight lies.

A number of classic Miura traits can be found in the new MB001 irons. These include a narrow top line as well as a clean, minimalistic look. Compared to the company’s current forged iron options, the MB001 has a clubhead that is nearly the same length heel-to-toe as the Tournament Blade. The clubhead is only slightly smaller than my current Callaway Apex forged irons and the sole is a bit narrower.

The MB001 is delivered in its own little Miura club bag which is quite impressive looking. The club itself has a very classic, old-school look to it. Pick it up and you instantly get an idea of how well balanced these clubs are – they simply feel great! It is easy to work the ball with these irons: high, low, left or right. Just make the necessary adjustments and you’ll be amazed at how easy it really is.

As with most forged irons when you hit it “pure”, you hardly feel a thing; hit it off-center and your yardage will suffer. One thing I did notice was that when I missed the shot off-center, my hands didn’t sting. I suppose this could be due in part to the suppleness of the PURE grip that comes installed as standard equipment.

These irons are probably not for players that don’t hit the ball right on the button. If you concentrate on watching the face of the club make contact with the back of the ball, and you’re bound to hit it right on! If you rely on feel and you hit the ball consistently, these irons could easily become your new best friend!

As is the case with most – if not all – Miura products, the price point on the Miura MB001 muscleback iron is a little step at $235 per iron. For more information on the MB001 or any other Miura product, visit their website at www.miuragolf.com.
