New Callaway Golf Footwear – Comfort and Performance

footwear-mCallaway Golf isn’t a name that immediately comes to mind when you think of golf shoes. Irons, drivers and balls yes; golf footwear, not so much. But Callaway is looking to change that with the introduction of two new lines of golf footwear: the Del Mar Series and Apex Tour series. These shoes were introduced to the market in mid-October and have really enhanced Callaway’s footwear product line.

The Del Mar series is a casual, spikeless shoe while the Apex Tour is a high performance tour player shoe. The Del Mar series is made up of two models: The Del Mar Zephyr and the Del Mar Sport; both are designed with the California heritage of the Callaway Golf company in mind. The Zephyr and Sport models offer the perfect balance of comfort and performance in a casual style appropriate for the both the course and the clubhouse.

Both the Zephyr and the Sport feature premium leather uppers as well as lightweight EVA outsoles that are combined with Callaway’s Xfer power wall and rubber traction elements. These features provide optimum stability and traction and dramatically reduce the amount of slippage that can occur on the shoe’s lateral sides when performing the backswing and finish.

The new Del Mar Zephyr is about 20% lighter than last year’s Del Mar series and has a more elongated casual shoe style similar to other popular European brands. It also features the Ortholite 3D insole for added comfort. The Sport model has a similar outsole model to that of the Zephyr as well as a molded Ortholite insole and is 12% lighter that the 2014 version. The Sport has a wider profile and is available in wider sizes, which is preferable by players wanting a more generous fit.

I slipped on a pair of the new Zephyr shoes and went and went out and played a round. They are a good looking shoe and elicited a number of comments. When faced with a number of uphill lies, downhill lies and wet conditions., the shoes performed well with no noticeable slippage. I couldn’t blame my poor shots on the new shoes, they kept my feet connected solidly to the ground.

With the Apex Tour shoe, Callaway took one of their most popular models and, with input from Callaway Tour players, redeveloped the shoe from the ground (pun intended) up. The newly designed Apex Tour shoe offers tour players exactly what they are looking for: a shoe crafted from premium leather that offers the ideal balance between a dress shoe and a golf shoe, as well as stability and comfort.

The Apex Tour features an outsole composed of multi-density materials. The outsole also features Xfer traction elements strategically placed to work in concert with nine PINS System Softspikes for ultimate Tour-level traction. The molded Ortholite insoles and enhance heel cushioning provide an improved fit to ensure maximum comfort.

When I saw the Apex Tour shoes, my first thought was “they don’t look real comfortable,” and “I wonder how long it will take me to break these shoes in?” When I slipped them on my feet (using the shoe horn provided by Callaway, of course) I was amazed at how comfortable they were. As for break in time, there was none. I wore them without incident (or blisters) for 18 holes; 13 holes longer than the Allen Edmonds shoes I had that looked similar. They performed well on the course and looked good doing it!

These new Callaway golf shoes are available at many golf shops both brick and mortar and online. The Del Mar Sport golf shoes retail for about $99.00; while the Zephyrs go for about $120 and the Apex Tour shoes will set you back $180.
