Golf rangefinders using the ubiquitous GPS technology have become commonplace and almost every golfer in the frequent-player category who isn’t using a laser rangefinder has either a GPS watch or handheld model. SkyGolf is a leader in the handheld segment with the SkyCaddie SX500 ($349.99) introduced last year now has a smaller, less expensive version the SkyCaddie SX400.

According to Jacqui Surman, COO and Senior Vice President of SkyGolf, “Now, we have harnessed all the advanced stroke-saving features of the SX500 and designed the SX400 for golfers wanting a more compact version of this popular device. The graphics and interface of the SX500 and SX400 are incredibly appealing and really give you every bit of information tour pros get from their caddies to play your best golf. With the launch of the SX500 and now the more compact SX400, we believe the SX Series is the best-priced, easiest to use, and most feature-packed GPS rangefinders on the market today.”

The visuals on the SX400 are clear and most of all useful showing the yardage and hole layout for each shot. The 4” diagonal display, though smaller than the 5” of the SX500, is still very readable even in bright sun. The first two times it was tested was at a course with GPS screens on the carts with the hole location loaded into the system daily. Yardage agreement between the SX400 and cart mounted system was excellent, and any difference was usually due to me having the hole location off slightly.

SkyGolf is different than the competing handheld yardage devices because their system is built around measurements from walking each course with GPS tracking units to record exact location of hazards, greens and green dimensions. Contrast this with dimensions and locations derived solely by measurement of satellite images and you get a sense of the commitment SkyGolf has made.
