STX is said by many golf industry experts to be the foremost authority on insert face technology. It would seem that over a quarter century ago the company introduced the first patented soft face insert, creating what at the time was referred to as “the softest legal face in golf.”
Soon after that, STX introduced the first USGA approved interchangeable face insert and removable weight system. These and other innovations have helped create a few of the standards for the putters we use today.
The ProFIT 5 is a classically styled, plumber’s neck putter. For the technical geeks out there, the ProFIT 5 is precision milled from 17-4 stainless steel and features 3 degrees of loft with a 71 degree lie angle. The putter is fitted with an exclusive black and white Golf Pride grip and a top of the line STX head cover. A black PVD finish complements the design. This dynamic combination of STX’s patented interchangeable insert technology and contemporary hardware creates a modern.
The ProFIT 5 was developed for golfers who prefer to fully customize their putter’s feel and response; as mentioned earlier it features interchangeable weights and face inserts for the ultimate in customization.
The black insert which is the softest of the three comes standard on the ProFIT 5; the red insert is considered medium and green insert is the firmest of the three. The red and green inserts are sold separately. The ProFIT 5 is available in both right and left hand models.
The folks at STX were kind enough to send me a ProFIT 5 to review and I am happy to say that since using this new putter, I have seen considerable improvement and have officially switched to it full time from an Odyssey 2-Ball Putter that I have been using for about three years.
Although the ProFIT 5 is reminiscent of a Ping Anser putter, the differences are significant. First of all, the face is interchangeable and the weighting can be changed. This makes the ProFIT 5 adaptable to all playing conditions. When playing in slow conditions, I can choose the green insert and the 14 gram weights to dial in on my distance control. When the greens are fast, I use the black insert and the 5 gram weights which deliver superior accuracy. If neither of these seem to be working, I give the red insert a try and use various weight configurations until I find the right response that renews my confidence and helps you hole more putts.
Secondly and more importantly is that it is wider at the bottom and provides a better feel on takeaway. I used to find myself waggling the putter all over on my takeaway; with the ProFIT 5, I have renewed confidence in my putting ability.
STX putters are available at many fine pro shops, online retailers as well as golf megastore Golfsmith. For more information on the company, you can visit them at www.stxgolf.com.
