Sun Mountain 3.5 LS Golf Bag Review

Not Light on Features

Sun Mountain recently unveiled a new line of carry golf bags that includes the 3.5 (as in net weight of 3.5 lbs.) LS stand bag. The 3.5 LS is designed to be a step up from the company’s lightest bag – the 2Five – and offers quite a few more features.

The 3.5 LS is built from a lightweight nylon fabric, with a high-strength-to-weight plastic. The extra  pound comes from a thicker strap, a more cushioned “Air-Flow” hip pad and an additional three pockets. When it comes to carry bags, there is usually a trade-off ratio between weight and features; the lighter the bag, the less features you get. The 3.5 LS breaks this stereotype. In all, the 3.5 LS has seven pockets, including a water-resistant velour-lined valuables pocket, a full-length apparel pocket and a hydration (aka water bottle) pouch. The extra pockets come in handy for inclement weather gear and an extra sleeve or two of balls for long golf trips.

Sun Mountain’s X-Strap System makes the bag easy to get on and off the shoulders and works just as well when used as a single strap for short jaunts. The carry straps are made with thick, high-density foam contoured to be wider at the top of the shoulder for more carrying comfort, and the new plastic strap guide provides effortless interaction between the two straps.

The 3.5 Ls’s stand is top mounted and features a patented roller bottom leg mechanism with highly durable carbon fiber legs that flip up and down effortlessly without any wavering or locking up. It’s the most stable stand bag I’ve ever owned.

The top of the 3.5 LS is 9” wide and is divided into four full-length compartments. Fourteen clubs fit easily, even if the putter has an oversized grip. The grab handles at the top and bottom of the bag make it easy to load and unload. Rounding out the feature list is an umbrella holder, a matching rainhood for those less than perfect days, a pen holder and towel loop.

I recently took the 3.5 LS on a whirlwind golf trip to Lake Oconee, GA, Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach, SC and Pinehurst, NC. Twenty-two golf courses in 15 days. The bad performed admirably in all kinds of weather conditions. It’s one of the lightest, high-quality golf bags on the market today and is loaded with all of the features you’ll ever need. It certainly gets the job done and looks good doing it!

The 3.5 LS bag from Sun Mountain is available in seven color options: Black, Black/Flash, Black/White/Red, Black/Cobalt/White, Gunmetal/Black/Yellow, Orange/White/Black and Navy/White/Red. Suggested retail price is $229.99. For more information on the Sun Mountain 3.5 LS stand bag, you can visit them online at
