Wilson D-100 Driver and Fairway Wood – Good Things from Wilson Staff

2608

willsonD100I have had the opportunity over the last several years to review Wilson Staff’s line of golf equipment – everything from drivers and irons to golf balls and wedges. So when I was asked if I would be interested in reviewing their latest drivers and fairway woods I jumped at the opportunity.

This marks the first time in a long time that Wilson has produced an entire range of clubs (woods, irons, hybrid and irons) with the same name. Perhaps it is because that the entire line utilizes “SuperLight Technology”, which essentially removes the unwanted mass to create a powerful, solid-feeling, balanced golf club. The key to incorporating this technology into a golf club is something Wilson refers to as “Right Light” which involves optimizing this limited weight and achieving the proper distribution among the head, shaft and grip to produce the best performance for each specific club.

Wilson Staff’s new D-100 driver is the lightest, easiest-to-swing driver on the market today and is over 50 grams lighter than traditional drivers. The SuperLight technology delivers extraordinary clubhead speeds resulting in greater distance: They have also incorporated an enhanced cup face design as well as variable face thickness technology meaning the ball travels hotter off the face for greater distance and a much more forgiving club. Nonessential weight in the crown has been moved to the side for a lower and deeper center of gravity, creating a steeper launch angle and increased MOI. Translation: more distance, more forgiveness and more fairways hit! This driver weighs in at a scant 269 grams.

The new D-100 Fairway woods are among the lightest and easiest-to-swing on the market as well. The Right Light™ club technology delivers optimally-designed club mass properties for greater head speeds with the same swing effort. The PVD Finish gives the D-100 fairway woods a low profile design; the sleek black finish sits square and delivers ultimate confidence at address.

The center of gravity has been relocated towards the heel, making it easier to square the club face at impact. Combine this with other technologies employed in creating this new club and you will find an improved launch angle and spin rate, and through chemically-etching the crown, moving it 10% lower improves feel and launch angle. Translation: more solid shots, better feel, higher launch all building to … a lower score!

I took both clubs over to my local driving range, not knowing what to expect. I played their DXi Superlight model for a few months last year and was quite impressed. I was told by their marketing department that big changes were on the way with the D-100 so I wasn’t sure what to expect. What I got was a big surprise. My first impression of the driver was how light and well balanced it felt. I did find it a little harder to work the ball left or right but if you are OK with hitting the ball straight all the time – and who isn’t – then this is the club for you.

After the positive results I had with the driver, my expectations for the fairway wood were equally as high and the D-100 did not disappoint. Again, I found that the lighter weight increased my clubhead speed which in turn added distance – just like Wilson Staff claimed it would. I found it very easy to hit both a draw and a fade, something that was tougher to do with the driver.

The new D-100 driver is available in three lofts: 9°, 10.5° and 12° and comes with a Matrix Ozik HD shaft in either senior, stiff or regular. The fairway woods are available in a 3, 5 or 7 wood, all with Matrix Ozik HD shafts in regular, stiff or senior. They also come with a headcover.

The entire Wilson Staff line is available at most major golf retailers – both brick and mortar and online. For more information you can go to their website at www.wilson.com.
