Golf in Sebring, Florida – Don’t Overlook This Location

I heard it said years ago that by the year 2016, the population of the state of Florida would surpass the population of the state of New York. Not only were they correct,  but five years later, the margin continues to widen.

There are several reasons for this sudden influx of humanity, the climate is perhaps the biggest. Not having to pay state income tax has to rank up there as well. For golf enthusiasts, there’s no better place in the country to be, you can swing the sticks year-round if you don’t mind the heat and humidity of the summer. Take it from a golf lover who lived in Florida for 22 years, you can get used to it!

Now that you’ve decided to make the move and join the hordes that are heading to the Sunshine State, you’ll need to decide where to go, east coast or west coast. The further south you go – on either coast – the more expensive things get. The price goes up as you get closer to the water, too. Private golf communities are a great option if golf’s a key reason for your move; it’s like one-stop shopping.

There are some great values to be had inland on both real estate and recreation. Sebring is an area that’s often overlooked. The median home price is well below the national average and as far as golf goes, the area is referred to as “America’s Value Golf Capital.” It’s also home to The Citrus Golf Trail, a collection of five local courses.

One of the members of “The Trail” is Sun ‘N Lake, a golfing community. Sun ‘N Lake was once considered a retirement community but over the past few years, it has become a melting pot for both active adults and younger professionals. About 9,000 residents call Sun ‘N Lake home; many of them are snowbirds.

The community is home to two championship golf courses, which have been voted the number one golf course in Highlands County for four years running, Deer Run and Turtle Run.

Deer Run is considered the tougher of the two. The course was originally designed by Don Dyer in 1976; local golf course architect Ron Garl redesigned a couple of holes in 2003 and put his signature on it by converting the 18th hole to a par 3 with an island green. This championship layout plays host to qualifiers for the Web.com Tour, the Latin America Tour, and the Canadian Tour each year. Deer Run offers golfers 6 sets of tees with suitable yardages to fit every level of golfer. From the Black Tees, the course plays 7,202 yards with a slope of 134 and a course rating of 73.7. Ladies can play a manageable 5,046 yards; most members play from the White Tees which measures 6,170 yards (69.6/127). The greens are Champion Bermuda, and the fairways and roughs feature 419 Bermuda grass.

Deer Run’s final three holes can make or break a great round. Number 16 is a par 4, dogleg right that plays 352 yards from the white tees and requires you to at least hit your tee shot to the corner of the dogleg. If you favor the left side off the tees, you’ll take many of the trees out of play and have a good look into the green. Be wary of the water and sand that guard the green. Number 17 is the toughest hole on the back nine and certainly the most challenging. The hole plays 379 yards from the White tees with a large pond in the middle of the fairway. Most golfers will be able to hit driver off the tee and should favor the left side of the fairway or risk being blocked out by trees. A good drive is still going to leave a long to medium iron into an elevated green protected on either side by sand. As referenced earlier, Number 18 is truly a unique hole to end a round of golf; after all, not many courses end with a par 3! From the white tees, the hole plays 128 yards to an island green. Choose your club wisely, hit a good shot and success can be yours. Find the water and you’re just another statistic!

Turtle Run was designed by Charles Ankrom and opened in 1999. Golfers have 4 sets of tees to choose from: the back tees play 6,402 yards with a course rating of 70.7 and a slope of 127. The ladies’ tees play from 5,002 yards (64.3/114). Two other tee boxes offer yardages suitable for all levels of golfers. The greens are Tifdwarf Bermuda, and the fairways and roughs feature 419 Bermuda grass. The course is built in the middle of a Scrub Jay preservation area and provides safe shelter for this protected species; it’s also a beautiful setting for the golf course.

Distance off the tee is not as important on Turtle Run as it is on her sister course. In fact, leaving the driver in the bag may be your best move on many holes. At just over 6,400 yards the course is not going to overpower the majority of golfers, regardless of the tees you choose. Landing areas off the tees are generous, the greens are incredible, and the emphasis is on the short game. Some greens are open in front and receptive to the senior-friendly bump-and-run shot; the majority are elevated with bunkers in front and require you to carry your approach onto the green. Distance is also key as many greens have multiple tiers and being on the same tier as the hole can shave several strokes.

For me, the most memorable hole on Turtle Run is the par 5, 14th. At only 481 yards from the White Tees, it’s definitely not the longest par 5, but for many players, it’s going to take a driver out of your hand because of the stream that crosses the fairway about 250 yards out. If you play down the left side of the fairway you can get 260-280 yards before you get to the wet stuff. A good line off the tee is the bunker on the right. Keep to the right with your layup and you’ll keep the water on the left out of play and then hit your approach shot to a slightly elevated green but beware of the deep, large bunker in the front left.

Sun ‘N Lake Golf Club is a proud member of the Citrus Golf Trail, which has done a wonderful job of making the Sebring area a golf vacation destination. The Citrus Golf Trail offers a variety of stay and play golf packages that include rounds of golf at several local courses as well as accommodations at The Inn on the Lakes. Inn on the Lakes is a unique property; they have 155 spacious, beautifully decorated guest rooms and suites, and no two are the same. Their fine dining restaurant, Chicanes, offers delicious meals as well as a sumptuous breakfast menu. They are the preferred accommodations vendor of the Citrus Golf Trail.

Sun ‘N Lake is not what they call a bundled community, meaning that you don’t have to join the club if you buy a home there. It seems to me that if you live there and play golf a membership makes sense, especially at the ridiculously low prices they charge!  They are offering an introductory membership at 50% off that includes unlimited play on both courses including a trail fee for your private cart, a $200 driving range credit discounts on merchandise in the pro shop, and many other benefits. The first year will set you back less than $2500 for a family! There are also special rates for seniors, super seniors, and seasonal golfers as well.

If you’re looking for an affordable golf vacation or somewhere in Florida that you can call home, check out Sun ’N Lake in Sebring. You can visit them online at www.sunlakegolfclub.com.

Titleist is calling the new T-series irons “the next generation” and certainly can point to the previous generation models as being the most played on the PGA Tour.

Most recreational players will be looking at the new T300s which offer all the bells and whistles in game improvement without the wider soles and thicker top lines of the super game improvement T400s, which presumably will be updated soon as well.

Two of the top Titleist-iron people were quoted in the media release.

“The new T-Series irons represent another step forward in Titleist iron design and technology,” said Josh Talge, Vice President, Titleist Golf Club Marketing. “With these new irons, across the board, every detail matters. They provide the best precision and performance in their respective iron category with stunning aesthetics and feel. Golfers don’t buy an iron ‘line’, they want specialization, and that’s what each of these models offer.”

“T-Series irons are designed to provide precise control for any player who wants to score lower,” said Marni Ines, Director, Titleist Irons Development, Golf Club R&D. “From form to feel to function, every aspect of these irons is crafted towards the golfer being consistent from their first shot to their last throughout every round. Whether it is the T100, T100•S, T200 or T300, every iron is individually engineered to help the golfer deliver a strike where they can see and feel pure performance.”

KINONA – Shaping the Future of Women’s Golf Apparel

In Hawaiian, the word KINONA means shape, and that’s what these products do: enhance a female golfers’ shape.

If you’re a female golfer who loves fashion, KINONA may be a brand you are not aware of but should be. KINONA is made for women golfers, by women golfers. The company was founded in 2017 by Dianne Celuch and Tami Fujii, two friends and corporate executives-turned-entrepreneurs. They are committed to making golf fashion more accessible and enjoyable for all women by bringing chic, contemporary, and functional fashion to the fairway. After all, looking good is just as important as playing well, isn’t it?

What sets KINONA’s apparel apart is its fabric. KINONA’s Italian fabric is what sets them apart from other apparel companies. It’s a combination of ECONYL – high-quality regenerated nylon and lycra. This results in superior fit, feel, and performance regardless of body type. The collections also feature apparel that stretches, compresses, and conceals in just the right places to flatter all figures. The fabric also has great moisture-wicking, sun protection, and antimicrobial properties. Shaping details such as higher waistbands, princess seam lines, etc. are built into all their shorts, dresses, and jackets. KINONA has added several innovative features such as tee holders and back pockets. They cater to women who are 30+ years of age, not exactly supermodel material, yet are comfortable in their own skin. That said, their apparel looks good on just about any body type.

KINONA seems to be at the forefront of popularizing the resurgence of the golf dress. Their Kick Pleat Chic Sleeveless Golf Dress is a sleeveless dress with a band collar a flattering high V-neck collar, and princess seaming in all the right places. The Italian fabric drapes beautifully, creating a flattering silhouette. The sassy front kick pleat adds both function and fashion as you stroll down the fairway. The mesh shorties help provide added coverage when you’re on the green. The Kick Pleat Chic Sleeveless Golf Dress is available in sizes XS – XXL and in Navy Blue/Foulard and Watermelon Red.

KINONA’s Swing and Swish Sleeveless Golf Dress is the perfect dress for just about anything; a day on the course, drinks at the 19th hole, or whatever else the club has to offer! It’s flattering, fun, and flirty. The Swing and Swish Sleeveless Dress features UPF 50+ sun protection and a 4-way stretch to get you completely through your golf swing without any pinching or binding. The zippered placket lets you decide how much sun you get. The dress comes with mesh undershorts with leg grippers, two on-seam pockets to help keep your golf balls and markers in place, as well as built-in tee holders. The Swing and Swish Sleeveless Golf Dress is available in Navy Blue, while the Swing and Swish Skort is available in the Mediterranean Floral print as well.

An innovative design is KINONA’s Rouched and Ready Sleeveless Golf Dress. With a 1/4 zip neckline that can be worn opened or closed and the “rouching” at the bottom also allows you to adjust the length of your dress, you can change your look as you choose. KINONA’s signature mesh undershorts are also included. It’s one of the most flattering and comfortable dresses you will find. The Rouched and Ready Sleeveless Golf Dress is available in Navy Blue and Foulard.

While it may not conform to your country club’s apparel regulations, the Tee it Up Shortsleeve Women’s Golf Shirt is the perfect basic tee when you just want to wear a cute skort to the grocery store. Or for a round of golf! It’s sewn from KINONA’s 4-way stretch Italian fabric and may quickly become your go-to tees both on and off the golf course. It’s available in White. Navy Blue, and Black.

The Tailored and Trim Golf Shorts are perfect for ladies who like to feel a bit more buttoned up. The pull-on design and wide waistband create a slimming silhouette and the 8″ inseam creates the look of a classic fly-front short. The seam down the front creates a lasting impression and the slits on the legs give added breathability and freedom of movement. The Tailored and Trim Golf Shorts are available in several solid colors and prints including the Foulard Print, Sand, Black, and Navy/Blue.

When the weather cools down you want to stay warm without sacrificing style and looks. KINONA has a couple of pieces that will help you do just that. Their Layer Up Golf Jacket is perfect for keeping the cool weather out on those early morning tee times, or for an early morning stroll around the neighborhood. It’s sewn from KINONA’s Italian fabric with plenty of stretch to launch your drive down the fairway. The Raglan sleeves help to make mobility a non-issue and the zippered pockets keep all your valuables in place. The Layer Up Golf Jacket fits easily over any of KINONA’s tops and is available in Navy, Blue and White.

KINONA’s Apres 18 Hoodie was meant to be worn to and from the golf course. Or when you’re warming up on the range. Or out doing the grocery shopping. Or binge-watching your favorite show. Get the picture? The cozy fabric, great quality, and attention to detail are everything you would expect from KINONA. The thumbhole in the cuffs helps keep the sleeves in place for added warmth and comfort and the pockets in the front are big enough to carry whatever you need. The Apres 18 Hoodie is available in either Watermelon Red or Navy Blue.

The Definitive Guide to Pinehurst Resort

The 11th Hole on Pinehurst No. 4

In recent years, much has been written about the renaissance of Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina’s famed Sandhills. From the restoration of No. 2, the opening of The Cradle, the reimagination of No. 4 and the resort’s new “forever” partnership with the USGA, the past decade has been a whirlwind of activity worthy of a 24-7 golf news cycle.

That stated, GolfGuide.com isn’t here to reinvent the sand wedge. Instead, based on numerous multi-day, 36-hole-a-day trips over the past five years, we offer our homebrewed, carefully curated Definitive Guide to Pinehurst Resort.

Let’s face it, planning a golf buddy or family trip to the Cradle of American Golf is an exhilarating experience. With nine courses, three hotels and a fistful of outstanding eateries, it can also be a bit daunting. Full disclosure, the resort has an awesome trip planning service to walk you through the nitty gritty.

But we’re here to caddie for you with a host of insider tips to help you pull-off the golf bucket list trip of a lifetime with flying colors. So with that said …

Best Arrival Day Golf Course: You can make a case for No. 5, an underrated Ellis Maples design that gently pitches and rolls through a residential area across Beulah Hill Rd. from the main golf campus. But the logical point to begin the epic journey that is Pinehurst Resort is the No. 1 Course, completed by Donald Ross in 1901.

Pinehurst No. 1

The expansive fairway of the par-4 opening hole is an arms-wide-open welcome to the Cradle of American Golf. The dead-straight, par-4 second follows suit, and every hole between it and the par-5 18th hole encourages golfers to play their absolute best. As an added bonus, the 18th tee box with the clubhouse in the background is the perfect buddies trip or family photo opp.

Best Championship Course that Isn’t No. 2 or No. 4: No shocker, here, as No. 8 is situated third among the resort’s courses in the national and in-state rankings. But put Tom Fazio’s Centennial in just about any other state and it’s the best track around. The golf cognoscenti tend to forget just how pure this layout is, and the green complexes, green speed and pin positions rival any tournament-caliber venue.

Pinehurst No. 8

No. 8 isn’t cut from the same Sandhills aesthetic cloth as No. 2 and No. 4. Rather, Fazio was handed 420 acres of rolling hills and wetlands that required a skillful routing. There are several forced-carry tee shots and aerial approaches into greens, but its brilliance manifests in No. 8’s differentiation from its siblings. An early morning or late afternoon round, here, is a transcendental experience, as each hole corridor is isolated from the next.

Best Course to Revisit if You Haven’t Played it in Years: The obvious answer is No. 4. In the 70s it was a Robert Trent Jones Sr. course, in the 80s a Rees Jones course and from 1999 to 2017, No. 4 was a highly-ranked Fazio design. The golf course architecture musical chairs ended in 2018 when Gil Hanse completely reimagined and redesigned No. 4 as a “companion” course to No. 2. Hanse’s craftsmanship is so on-point that 19th hole debates rage as to whether it or No. 2 is the superior circuit.

Pinehurst No. 4

The not so obvious answer, on the other hand? No. 7. Original designer Rees Jones restyled this off campus course into a Herculean test of golf in 2002. No. 7 is 7,216-yards of pure muscle fiber routed through 25 acres of wetland, three acres of waste bunkers and 75 bunkers. Its 520-yard par-5 opening hole, with a double-bending fairway, sets the stage immediately for “hard par, easy bogey” – a timeless hallmark of Jones family design. Tee shots are generally downhill, approach shots are usually uphill, and Jones’ routing takes on a steady rhythm that makes No. 7 a joy to play.

Best Golf Bonding Experience: If golf was a religion (and for many it comes close), then The Cradle would be its church. On any given day, and especially in the mid to late afternoon, Hanse’s 10-acre short course is humming with golf groups from all over the U.S. and around the world with their shoes off and transfusions in hand.

The Cradle

Music from hidden speakers fills the air, as do tee shots from both grass and mat tees. The experience is collective and redemptive, and by the time golfers walk off the ninth green, they’ve made at least 100 new friends. And when church lets out, the people can simply adjourn to the 75,000-square-foot playground that is the Thistle Dhu putting course.

Best Non-Golf Bonding Experience: The Drum & Quill in the Village of Pinehurst is the type of joint where if the shades were pulled down tight, you’d lose all sense of space and time. The iconic pub and eatery owned by former golf marketer and writer Kevin Drum is as busting and boisterous at lunch as it is come nightfall. Well, maybe not quite. Pull up a barstool, order fish and chips, have the bar keep pull your favorite pint, and forget about what ails you. You won’t regret it.

The Deuce

Meanwhile, back at Pinehurst, the Deuce serves this role, and serves it well. Situated on the far side of the main clubhouse, this authentic tavern is located just behind the 18th green on No. 2. Outdoor seating allows guests to grab a beer and a bite and watch all the action coming in. An ample selection of craft brews are on tap, and everything on the gastropub-focused menu is perfectly executed.

Best Restaurant for Buddies and Family Trips: When the Pinehurst Brewing Company opened in the old Village steam plant in 2018, the vision called for a neighborhood gathering place that was equal parts golf buddy hang and family dining destination. Mission accomplished on that front and throw in a nice mix of local patrons and out-of-town visitors to top it all off.

Pinehurst Brewing Company

The “PBC’s” BBQ is front and center, highlighted by smoked baby back ribs, pork shoulder, brisket and homemade sausages. But hand-tossed, wood-fired pizzas are a sneaky second favorite, and pair just as well with the brewery’s selection of handcrafted ales and lagers. The Pivot IPA has become the stuff of legend, and as soon as it hits the taps and coolers (in cans), the supply can be wiped out in a matter of days.

Best Lodging for an Extended Stay: For those who want to play as many Pinehurst Resort courses as possible, i.e. all of them, even a 36-hole-a-day pace yields a five-day, five-night vacation that ventures into “extended stay” territory. The Carolina Villas rise to the occasion to fill this niche perfectly. Located adjacent to the Carolina Hotel, they feature four privately keyed guest rooms with their own bathrooms.

Carolina Villas

Better yet, the four bedrooms spill out into a spacious living room with a wet bar, dining area, and either a balcony or patio for chilling outdoors. The bed configuration is two queens, with each unit easily accommodating eight golfers or two families. All the modern accoutrements are included, such as Wi-Fi, flat screen TVs and Keurig coffee makers.

Vineyard Vines – Luxury Apparel for On and Off the Golf Course

Ever since I saw Jason Duffner walking off the course at the 2015 Memorial Golf Tournament in Ohio in 2015, I was intrigued by the brand. After doing some research and finding out how the company got its start, I became a fan. Once I started wearing their apparel, I became hooked!

Each year, the company seems to not only come out with new products but also continually expand on existing product lines. For example, their On-The-Go Pants may look – and feel – like your favorite pair of khakis from yesteryear, but these pants are packed with performance. The 55% cotton/32% nylon/13% Spandex fabric has a soft cotton-like hand feel and added stretch that moves with you through your golf swing. The stretchy interior waistband means you can make that extra run through the buffet line and your pants will forgive you. The hidden zipper and media pocket give you extra security while you’re on the move and the water-resistant fabric protects against unsuspecting spills. These pants fit straight through the thigh and slightly taper to the ankle. The On-The-Go Pants are available in waist sizes 24 – 42 and in 7 colors: Stone, Khaki, Harbor, Jetty Red, Blue Blazer, Tide Blue, and Sage Olive.

The Printed Sankaty Polo was named for the Sankaty Head Golf Club and Sankaty Lighthouse on the eastern end of Nantucket. By their admission, it is one of the best polos Vineyard Vines has ever made. It’s one of the softest performance polos on the market with a classic, relaxed fit, built-in stretch for comfort and movement, wrinkle-resistance for a clean look, and UPF 30+ for sun protection. The collar stand and 3-button placket give the Sankaty Polo a classic golf look and the whale logo on the chest identifies the brand. It’s available in sizes XS – XXL and in several colors including Flats Blue, Sliders Ocean Breeze, Jake Blue Tejeda, or Passion Fruit.

Our Garment-Dyed Shep Shoulder Sweater combines chunky, rugged cotton with their signature Shep Shirt styling. It’s a mix of classic cable stitches and contrast woven detailing at shoulders with a zipper placket and a washed/faded vintage look. The result is a warm layer that can easily be dressed up for drinks at the club or a day on the course. It’s available in sizes XS – XXL and only in Tide Blue.

The first pair of shorts Vineyard Vines brought to market was their Breaker Shorts and they’ve been making them better ever since. The 98% cotton/2% spandex fabric is super soft with just the right amount of stretch. These shorts are comfy, strong, and breathable. The slash pockets in front and button-through besom back pockets provide ample storage for all of your golf needs. These 9 Inch Breaker Shorts are available in sizes 28 -46 and in an embroidered design in Moonshine with embroidered fish heads. They look a lot better than they sound!

9 Inch Printed On-The-Go Shorts are sewn from the company’s lightweight, stretchy, moisture-wicking, and quick-drying On-The-Go fabric. The flexible waistband creates unsurpassed comfort and the DWR “Durable Water-Repellent” coating repels water. A hidden media pocket is great for stashing gadgets. These Printed On-The-Go Shorts are available in sizes 28 – 46 and in Basket Bora. The non-printed design is available in 11 vibrant colors.

Soft, broken-in slub cotton lends its name to Vineyard Vines’ Island Garment-Dyed Long-Sleeve Slub Crewneck. It’s garment-dyed and washed down for a lived-in look and makes for a great three-season lightweight layer. It’s 100% cotton and keeps its shape after numerous washes. The Slub is available in sizes XS – XXL and in several colors including Sharkskin, Jetty Red, Sunny, Moonshine, Vineyard Blue, Andros Blue, or Bright Peach.

For lounging around the house in total comfort I highly recommend the Whale Logo Long-Sleeve Harbor Performance Tee. These long-sleeve performance tee shorts are an essential addition to any active guy’s wardrobe. The 94% polyester/6% spandex fabric is a performance blend with added stretch and UPF 30 sun protection. It’s also moisture-wicking and quick-drying. The giant whale graphic gives the brand away. The Whale Logo Long-Sleeve Harbor Performance Tee is available in sizes XS – XXL and in White Cap, Medium Gray Heather, Bora Blue, Green Gecko, or Vineyard Navy.

The Bloom Sankaty Margo Shirt Dress is sewn from Vineyard Vines’ signature Sankaty fabric with UPF 50+ sun protection. The fabric is lightweight and airy and looks amazing with its elbow-length sleeves, collar, and button-front placket. The Bloom Sankaty Margo Shirt Dress is available in sizes XS – XXXL and in Deep Bay/Marlin.

The 17 Inch (Seersucker) Scallop Skort is a preppy performer. The performance fit has added stretch for mobility and the moisture-wicking twill skirt keeps you dry and cool. The undershorts have gripper tape at the short hem to keep things where they should be. The two back pockets have seam zippers, and the scallop hem and pocket details add a feminine touch. There’s a whale embroidered above the back pocket to help you remember the brand! It’s perfect for the course or the clubhouse. The 17 Inch (Seersucker) Scallop Skort is available in sizes 00 – 16 and only in Cornflower. It will pair well with your favorite polo. It’s also available in a 17 Inch, 88% polyester/12% spandex fabric in the same sizes and several colors including Stone, Deep Bay, and White Cap.

Vineyard Vines’ Solid Pique Polo offers timeless style in a soft moisture-wicking pique fabric to help keep you cool and comfortable all day long. The jacquard styled collar has open sleeves and an open hem and a buttoned front placket to keep you cool. It’s available in sizes XXS – XL and in White Cap. There’s also a whale logo embroidered on the chest.

For lounging around the house, the Vintage Whale Long-Sleeve Pocket Tee could easily become your go-to tee!  The 100% cotton fabric is soft and breathable, and the signature Vineyard Vines text down the left sleeve and whale graphic on the chest and back leave no doubt that this is indeed your favorite brand. It’s available in sizes XXS – XL and in several colors including Lady Slipper Fuchsia, Papaya Punch, or Clearwater.

The Dreamcloth Striped Relaxed Shep Shirt is designed for a relaxed fit and typically runs big, so you may want to consider sizing down. The super-soft 48% rayon/48% acrylic/4% spandex fabric has a luxurious hand feel and there’s a logo box on the chest and at the back of the neck. This garment is available in sizes XXS – XXXL and in Jet Black Stripe.

The Sun-Washed Fisherman Sweater was inspired by vintage fisherman sweaters and features several performance updates. It’s 100% cotton, fits true to size, and is designed for a relaxed fit. The gorgeous all-over mix stitching and crewneck with a ribbed collar, hem, and cuffs create a classic fisherman look. The sun-washed colors make this the perfect sweater for spring golf! The Sun-Washed Fisherman Sweater is available in XXS – XL and in either Andros Blue or Cloud Blue

Another great spring weather sweater is the Striped Heritage Cotton V-Neck Sweater. It too is 100% heritage cotton with a relaxed fit and a soft hand feel. In true classic golf sweater fashion, the collar, hemline, and sleeve openings are ribbed and the whale logo on the chest completes the look. The Heritage Cotton V-Neck Sweater is available in sizes XXS – XXXL and in White Cap/Deep Bay. It is truly a Vineyard Vines classic

The Island Fisherman Super Luxe Crewneck Sweater is the perfect layer for chilly days on the course. The 57% Merino wool/25% cashmere/18% nylon fabric fits true to size and is designed for a regular fit. The super plush cashmere blend fabric is super soft with a luxe hand feel and the crewneck and full-length sleeves pair well with the Mango Shirt Dress. It’s available in sizes XXS – XL and in Camel.

This is a brief glimpse of what Vineyard Vines has in store for golfers this spring. For more information or to see all of their wonderful golf and non-golf apparel, visit www.vineyardvines.com.

Gadsden Country Club – Casual Southern Elegance

Gadsden may not be well known to people outside of Alabama, but this small town of about 36,000 not only played an important role in the Civil War, but it was an integral part of Alabama’s rise as a southern industrial power, being home to steel, textile, and other manufacturing facilities. From the late 19th century through the 1980s, companies such as the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and Republic Steel called Gadsden home. As the economy changed, these companies moved out, taking a lot of jobs with them, but one business that has survived is The Gadsden Country Club.

The Gadsden Country Club was founded in 1919 on what was originally a peach orchard adjacent to the Noccalula Falls. The original club which included a 9-hole course was built on 50 acres of land, with an option of 50 more acres for 9 more holes at a future date.  As it turned out, the other nine wasn’t built until 1942.

Gadsden Country Club sits nestled in the beautiful foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The clubhouse is situated at the peak of 110 rolling acres in an elegant residential area and is known for its spectacular view. Inside you’ll find a fine dining restaurant and some of the best banquet facilities in northeast Alabama. There’s a full tennis complex and an Olympic-sized swimming pool. The pool is a popular family gathering place from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Members and guests enjoy exceptional service while experiencing the ambiance one would expect from a casually elegant southern club.

Gadsden’s CC’s tennis facilities include 8 Har-Tru soft courts, four hard courts, a fully stocked Tennis Pro Shop with racquet restringing capabilities, re-gripping, diagnostics, and the latest demos to try when it’s time for a new weapon on the court. Certified Tennis Professional Paul Robin coordinates all tennis operations such as private or group tennis lessons and a junior tennis program for all ages.   Weather permitting, the tennis facilities are available year-round.

The centerpiece of Gadsden Country Club is the 18-hole championship golf course. Since its original creation in 1919 by Scotsman George Black, there have been numerous changes; holes have been rerouted and the nines have been flipped. It is unknown who designed the second nine; some have attributed it to the infamous A.W Tillinghast who had visited the area years earlier and was thoroughly impressed. In 1997 world-renowned golf course architect Bill Bergin was brought in to weave his magic and reimagine the golf course.

Gadsden Country Club offers members and their guests five sets of tees with yardages ranging from 6,657 yards from the Gold Tees (course rating 72.3/slope 130) to the Red Tees for Ladies and Seniors which plays 4,884 (65.7/121). At 6,101 yards (69.5/128), the Blue Tees offer a good challenge and still let you leave with a little bit of dignity.

There are a lot of fun and challenging holes at Gadsden Country Club but none as memorable as the run from Number 15 through the 18th green. Make it around these four holes with a number around or below par, and you’ve probably had a pretty good round. Number 15 is the club’s signature hole, a picturesque par 3 over water that plays 157 yards from the Blue Tees. It’s one of only a few holes that doesn’t have a profound elevation change. It’s a 140-yard carry over the water with a small pot bunker in the back. Find the bunker and your sand shot can be intimidating with the water looming beyond the pin. Par is a good score here.

Sixteen is a 352-yard par 4 that has one of the most intimidating and challenging tee shots on the golf course. The lake you see between you and the green is only about 230 yards away and when the fairways are hard, there is a lot of roll. If you’re hitting your driver well, take dead aim over the trees on the right side, up the narrow sliver of the fairway that leads to the green. Laying up short of the water will leave an approach shot of about 125 yards into a fairly level green. Another hole where a par is a good score.

Number 17 is a dogleg left that plays 359 yards from the Blue Tees. The large pine tree in front of you screams “drive the ball over me,” and if you do so successfully, you’ll have about a 100 – 110-yard pitch shot slightly uphill.

The closing hole is the toughest on the inward nine and one that will surely test your mettle, Ideally, you want to play down the left side and find the fairway left of the fairway bunker on the right. Hit your drive right off the tee and the fairway falls off by the trees and cart path, leaving an extraordinarily hard second shot.  Trees dot the landscape along the left side too and anything left of those trees will be tough as well. A good drive will leave a mid-iron into a small green protected by a bunker front right and a large overhanging oak tree front left. Once again, par is a good score here.

Gadsden Country Club has some pretty impressive practice facilities including a full-length driving range where you can hit every club in the bag, a separate chipping area, and two practice putting greens. The course is open year-round, weather permitting, but bad weather isn’t necessarily a game-changer. You can move your game indoors and play or practice on the club’s TrackMan system.

After your round, head inside the clubhouse for your favorite beverage and a bite to eat. When it comes to dining and good food, you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything better than what is offered at Gadsden Country Club. The dining facilities include a Gentleman’s and Mixed Grill, Casual Dining Room, Main Bar, and several private dining rooms that are used for banquet and private events.

If you’re serious about your golf game and want to take it to the next level, PGA resident pro Matt Ganshaw can help. Using the Trackman launch monitor and indoor simulator, he can help fix any of your swing woes. The pro shop is fully stocked with logoed apparel from all of your favorite manufacturers as well as tees, balls, and other golf necessities.

Gadsden Country Club is accepting new members and has a membership plan that will meet just about everyone’s needs and budget. Galway Bay Rainwear 2021

Galway Bay Apparel is serious about rain and golf. Their tag line is “Just because the weather changes, doesn’t mean your swing has to.”

Every golfer knows if you play this maddening game sooner or later you will be rained on and having quality rainwear designed for golf by golfers to keep dry and warm is the secret for not having your day ruined.

For this golf season Galway Bay, based in Novi, Michigan, has updated their stylish line with new touches of color and improvements to the waterproof fabric used for the long sleeve and short sleeve jackets and pants.

The updated fabric is called Hydro-Flex 32 and as the name implies it both sheds water and has stretch so you are dry and can make an unrestricted swing. The 3-layer fabric has a hydrophilic interior that pulls moisture away and passes it to the outer layer that contains Teflon to be dispersed along with the rain plus excess body heat is released for added comfort.

Hydro-Flex 32 is lightweight and not bulky so walking and swinging are comfortable without any pulling across the shoulders and chest.

In discussing the 2021 offerings Michael Brown COO of Galway Bay was quoted, “Our proprietary Hydro-Flex 32 fabric is the most breathable waterproof technology in the industry. The All-Weather Jacket is now more lightweight and includes more stretch with the same level of waterproofness and breathability.”

Brown continued by saying, “It’s the subtle touches, like a quieter, stretchier fabric and design elements that help you play undistracted and unrestricted, that our customers appreciate. Add in rubberized waterproof zippers and rain pants that fit to your personal waist and inseam and you start to see our commitment to bringing golfers the most functional and enjoyable-to-wear rain gear on the market.”

Small touches often mean a lot and Galway Bay solved the irritating way rain jackets rub on your chin when fully zipped because there being too much collar in the front by tapering the high rear collar to just 1.25 inches and making it rounded. No chin-poking anymore as you walk and swing.

Another nice touch is the waterproof/windproof pants are available in standard and tailored fit and have belt loops to solve the annoying problem of other rain pants that don’t stay up. It goes without saying all the zippers are waterproof.

The black-on-black with long sleeves jacket is a great choice for all-weather wear and the company is running an introductory price of $299, $30 less than regular retail, and the companion classic fit pants, which are unlined, lightweight, and breathable, also in black are $184. The black-on-black short sleeve jacket is introductory priced at $20 less than list for $229.

As the season progress a short sleeve white jacket with black accents ($249) and a long sleeve jacket with sage accents ($329) will be available.

“The Short-Sleeve White Jacket is an eye-catching piece that will have its instant fans. The black-on-black is a versatile staple that will likely be our best seller, but we’re excited to be doing new things with our colorways and how the accents panels and the logos appear on jackets, so the looks really pop. The Black with Sage Jacket really takes some fun, new directions with the accent panels but it’s still a great-looking, classic piece,” says Brown.

Galway Bay’s New 2021 Rainwear Line Already Making Waves

Galway Bay’s (galwaybaygolf.com) newest All-Weather rainwear line recently debuted with instant acclaim and improvements to its renowned lightweight, breathable, fully waterproof Hydro-Flex 32 fabric. The award-winning collection of jackets, pants and pullovers, also known for its ability to block wind and rain, and allow golfers to stretch and move freely while staying warm and dry, showcases classic style and some new fashion-forward touches.

Popular golf-equipment review website (www.mygolfspy.com) has already heralded Galway Bay’s All-Weather rainwear line 2021’s “Best Rain Wear Under $500.”  According to MyGolfSpy’s panelists, “The All-Weather suit performs well once again. It has some small tweaks in its design but the performance was never compromised. The water runs off with ease but the suit remains breathable in warmer conditions. Throw in customizable pant lengths and you have a top performer in 2021.”

In 2018 and 2019, Galway Bay was also named MyGolfSpy’s “Most Wanted Rain Gear” over every other brand in the industry.

New for 2021, Galway Bay has made its ultra-waterproof Hydro-Flex 32 fabric even lighter and stretchier for better freedom of movement. Also, new colorways in the All-Weather Jacket line include black-on-black, black-on-sage and, for the first time, an eye-catching short-sleeved white jacket with black accents.

Galway Bay’s new All-Weather Pants are now available with a quieter, lighter Hyrdo-Flex 32 fabric for comfort and ease of motion. The waterproof and windproof pants now come in standard and tailored fit – with a more modern-cut tapered leg – options. Both pants feature belt loops, a seven-inch zipper and nine-inch-deep pockets, are designed to look like and be worn as golf slacks, eliminating the need to dress in layers. Galway Bay’s newest pants are constructed of the improved Hyrdo-Flex 32 material and can be ordered to fit a golfer’s exact waist and inseam sizes, optimizing comfort, fit and style like no other rain pant ever has.

“Our proprietary Hydro-Flex 32 fabric is the most breathable waterproof technology in the industry. The All-Weather Jacket is now more lightweight and includes more stretch with the same level of waterproofness and breathability,” says Galway Bay COO Michael Brown. “It’s the subtle touches, like a quieter, stretchier fabric and design elements that help you play undistracted and unrestricted, that our customers appreciate. Our jacket collar, for example, is high in the back to keep your neck dry while tapering down in the front so it doesn’t poke your chin. Add in rubberized waterproof zippers and rain pants that fit to your personal waist and inseam and you start to see our commitment to bringing golfers the most functional and enjoyable-to-wear rain gear on the market.”

THE 2021 LINE
The 2021 expansion of the Galway Bay line shows a commitment to the most cutting-edge materials and design in the industry while presenting an inviting variety of styles and colorways.

The all-new Black-on-Black All-Weather Long-Sleeve Jacket is available at a debut price of $299 (regular retail price – $329) while the matching unlined, lightweight and highly breathable Black All-Weather Pants, in classic fit, retail for $184. The All-Weather Short Sleeve Jacket will retail for $249 but is currently available for $229.

Later this year, an All-Weather Short-Sleeve White (with black accents) Jacket will be available for $249 along with the All-Weather Long-Sleeve Black with Sage Jacket ($329). “The Short-Sleeve White Jacket is an eye-catching piece that will have its instant fans. The black-on-black is a versatile staple that will likely be our best seller but we’re excited to be doing new things with our colorways and how the accents panels and the logos appear on jackets so the looks really pop. The Black with Sage Jacket really takes some fun, new directions with the accent panels but it’s still a great-looking, classic piece,” says Brown.

THE TECHNOLOGY
Galway Bay’s bi-component technology (Hydro-Flex 32) is a proprietary, three-layer 100% waterproof fabric that is constructed with a hydrophilic interior to pull moisture away from the skin and transfer it to the outer layer. The exterior surface area disperses and releases moisture for more efficient dry times. It regulates temperature in both hot and cold conditions. In addition, the fabric is more breathable, stretchable than ever, and features a rubberized waterproof zipper that together ensures the ultimate comfort and fit providing true performance.

All Galway Bay fabrics are designed to breathe easy, releasing excess body heat and reducing sweat so golfers can swing and move freely.

Galway Bay rainwear is sold online and, soon, in select golf shops. To learn more about Galway Bay’s innovative line of golf outerwear, visit www.GalwayBayGolf.com.

WYNTK:
The Tour Edge Exotics family expands dramatically with the addition of the Pro 721 drivers, fairway woods and hybrids. All are designed to produce low spin with smaller heads than the previous 721s made for recreational golfers. Pro 721s will be attractive visually to better players who typically have higher swing speeds as well as providing the performance they want.

The Pro 721 family carries the tagline “Straight from the Tour Van” and will be offered only in a 1,000-piece run limited edition of each model.

The idea is to provide better ball strikers with low spin penetrating shots for added distance by pushing the center of gravity near to the face with the driver and fairway woods open at address and the hybrid square.

“We’ve become the leader in low spin technology and Pro 721 is taking that to a new level,” said Tour Edge founder and Master Club Designer David Glod. “These designs lead to penetrating shots with an extremely tight dispersion that maxes out distance, while still offering healthy launch angles.”

We particularly took note of their special Diamond Face technology seen first last year. The 2.0 version uses multiple diamond shapes of variable thickness on the interior of the face to act as what Tour Edge calls “mini-trampolines.” Their testing shows faster ball speeds and better retention of ball speed when impact is not in the center of the face.

A Beginner’s Guide To Golf In Texas

It’s one of the oldest sports in existence, having been created in the 1700s, but it also stands as one of the more popular sports within Texas itself. As a sport that has considerable traction and interest across Texas as a whole, it is unsurprising that that so many people from across the state are willing to get involved.

Why is golf big in Texas

It might not be as popular as say football or cricket as far as worldwide interest goes, but it would be fair to say that there are some native Texans who helped to shape how popular golf now is in the Lone Star State. It might seem surprising, but in the course of shaping the modern game as you now know it, no fewer than 17 native Texas have been inducted in the Golfing Hall of Game, which is simply staggering especially when compared to the other larger states. In California, they have only seen seven such inductees, whereas in Florida they haven’t received a single one. Even the likes of Jordan Spieth hail from Texas, meaning that one of the bright lights of the modern game also calls the state home. With so many big names having hailed from Texas, it is unsurprising that so many people have taken an interest as time goes on.

Where do I find more information

Finding information of your favorite golfer can be difficult, especially in the build up to a major tournament and it is important to use the correct sites wherever possible. Why not take some time to research some of the ways to find your favorite content so you can be more informed for all the major tournaments. Nobody likes to be left out of the loop and by knowing where to go, it can make life that little bit more interesting in the long run. Golf has been around for hundreds of years and isn’t going anywhere, so you might as well embrace it.

There’s so many courses

There is an abundance of golf courses across Texas that hav seen some of the biggest names and tournaments take place across the state. This has been a significant increase in the number of people getting involved with golf and wanting to improve their own game – it is unsurprising that they want to join some of the bigger names in the sport. Even the Ryder Cup was based in Texas at one point, showing that even the biggest competitions wanted to make use of the state’s facilities. In 1967, Houston played host to golf’s biggest competition and it was seen as a rousing success with millions tuning in to watch it. For Texan involvement in this year’s Ryder Cup, it all hinges on the form of Spieth, who has seen his ranking jump from 22nd to 13th in the current ranking and he will be hoping to push himself even higher.

With so many courses across the state, why not make the most of what is on your doorstep. It could be worth your while.

Victoria Hills Golf Club – Possibly Ron Garl’s Best Design

Deland, FL is located about 30 miles north of Orlando, on your way to Daytona Beach along I-4. To many, it’s recognized as the home of Stetson University although golfers may recognize it as the home of one of golf course architect Ron Garl’s best designs.

Victoria Hills opened in 2002 and has been delighting golfers of all abilities ever since. Over the years, the course has been awarded its fair share of accolades including a 4 1/2-star rating from Golf Digest Places to Play as well as several others including the 7th Best Public Access course in Florida (Golfweek 2004/05), and #41 in the Top 50 Public Courses you can play in the US by Golf World Magazine in 2010. It’s a perennial Florida favorite and has been consistently ranked in the top 12 courses in Florida, thanks to Ron Garl’s creativity. Victoria Hills is also enrolled in Audubon International’s Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses to ensure that the course helps to protect our local environment, conserve natural resources, and provide wildlife habitats.

The course sits on over 150 acres of gently rolling terrain that is typically not found in Florida. The land features lots of contouring and elevation, something not often seen in these parts of the state. Many golfers once considered Victoria Hills the best course in Central Florida with its rolling hills, lush vegetation, and finely manicured course conditions. Victoria Hills is surrounded by hundreds of oak hammocks and Augusta pines, and the course is delicately carved from a sandy terrain with pristine lakes and flowering green foliage throughout.

The naturally rolling terrain and pine tree-lined fairways are more reminiscent of Pinehurst, North Carolina than Florida. Trees line the fairways of many landing areas although there are ample landing areas off the tees. However, on a few holes, clusters of bunkers on either side seemingly shrink the landing area. Around the greens, you’ll find a variety of swales, collection areas, and deep bunkers guarding many of the elevated putting surfaces. Straight putts are a rarity at Victoria Hills. The majority of greens have a good deal of slope and undulation to them.

Florida golf courses are often defined by water, palm trees, and sand. That isn’t the case at Victoria Hills in Deland, FL, except for the sand. There are over 100 bunkers on Victoria Hills in a variety of shapes and sizes. Many of them are quite penal with thick, well-trimmed bunches of sawgrasses framing many of them. Clusters of bunkers dot the landing areas off of most tees, sometimes on both sides of the fairway. Water is basically non-existent and only comes into play on 5 holes.

This beautiful 18-hole, par-72 golf course offers golfers five sets of tee boxes. The Champion(back) tees play 7149 yards with a course rating of 74.7 and a slope of 134. If you’re good enough to play from these tees you’ll face some formidable carries over the few water hazards that do exist, as well as ravines and sandy waste areas. Move up to the Challenge (Blue) tees (5967 yards/69.3/124) and most of these hazards are either not in play or out on the peripheries. Nonetheless, the course still offers a challenge for all who visit. The views are magnificent, and you’ll be tested with each shot you take!

Like most Ron Garl courses, Victoria Hills has many holes that will stick in your memory for a while. Number 4 is a slight dogleg left that plays 361 yards from the Challenge Tees. By hitting your tee shot past the fairway bunkers on the right, not only will you take the lake on the left out of play, but you’ll also have an unimpeded shot into a well-undulated green.

Number 5 is a long straight par 5 that, if I were naming holes, it would simply be called “Bunkers.” There are no less than nine bunkers in the landing area and from the Challenge Tees, this demanding par 5 plays 520 yards. Even though it’s about as straight as a hole can be, it’s going to take three well-executed shots to reach the green, which is surrounded by bunkers on all four sides. If you can make a par or better, take it and be happy.

The 8th hole is another picturesque hole with a landing area squeezed in by bunkers on either side. From the Challenge Tees, it plays 347 yards and from the tee box, it looks as if there is no landing area past the traps on the left. A good drive that finds the fairway is going to leave a short pitch shot into an elevated green with a false front. Bunkers protect either side and the one on the left is rather deep.

Number 15 is an interesting dogleg left par 5 that plays 477 yards from the Challenge Tees. What makes this hole so interesting is the group of large oak trees on the left side of the fairway that comes into play with your tee shot. Long ball hitters that can guide their tee shot between the water on the left and the oak trees, can shorten the hole and have a go for the green in two. Higher handicappers that play down the right side the entire way take the water out of play. It’s a fun golf hole.

Before your round, warm it up with a bucket of balls on Victoria Hills’ driving range. The practice facilities are pretty comprehensive and include a double-ended grass range with multiple targets, 2 short game areas with sand bunkers, and a large putting green.

After your round stop by for some delicious food and drink at Sparrow’s Grille. They offer a diverse menu, friendly service, and there are several dining venues available for different occasions. Sparrow’s main dining room is elegantly appointed and hosts some of the area’s most beautiful wedding receptions. Sparrow’s is open every morning for lunch at 11 AM and offers dinner Wednesday – Saturday nights. There’s also a Sunday brunch. Sparrow’s isn’t limited to your regular clubhouse food. For lunch try something different like the Soy-Chili Glazed Pork Riblets or the Egg Salad BLT. For dinner, there’s the Blue Cheese-Crusted Filet Mignon. It doesn’t matter what you choose, it’s all delicious!

What you’ll find at Victoria Hills is a course with a lot of character. The rolling terrain the course is built on has a lot to do with that; it is anything but a flat, boring Florida golf course. Although there is ample room for error on many holes, a good short game is necessary if you want to score well. The course has been under new ownership since the beginning of 2020 and numerous changes have been made to maintain and continually improve the overall aesthetics and course conditioning for both members and guests. I spoke with several golfers who play the course regularly and they are excited about the continuous work and effort being done on a daily basis.

If Victoria Hills is a course you like to play over and over, why not consider membership? There are several benefits to becoming a member including unlimited greens fees and tee times up to 14 days in advance. You’ll also receive discounts in the pro shop and restaurant. Fill out the form on their website for more information. www.victoriahillsgolf.com.

Tanglewood Golf Course – Mountain-Style Golf in the Hills of Kentucky

Tanglewood Golf Course is an eighteen-hole golf course in Taylorsville, Kentucky that isn’t easy to find. Unless you’re looking for it, you probably wouldn’t know it’s there but trust me, it’s worth the drive. And I’m not the only one that thinks so. According to General Manager Matt Puckett, year in and year out, groups come to Tanglewood from the surrounding states and the club’s 12 condos and 12 motel rooms start getting booked up for the year by the middle of April.

Tanglewood is located a mere seventeen miles from Louisville, Kentucky, and I-265 (the Gene Snyder Freeway), The course is set on over 200 acres of “rolling terrain,” and I use that term loosely. It’s probably as close to mountain golf as you can get to in this area. It was designed by Buck Blankenship and opened for play in 1994. From the White Tees, Tanglewood plays 6,202 yards; With a course rating of 70.9 and a slope of 129. There’s one par 5 on the front side, making it a par 35, and three par 5’s on the back for a par of 37. Ladies typically play from the Red Tees (4,802/66.8/117) with a par of 73.

While there may not be a lot of bunkers on the course, the elevation changes and slope in the fairways and greens more than compensates. Narrow tree-lined ryegrass fairways that play along sloped hillsides produce those dreaded uneven lies and ultimately lead to fast, well-manicured Bentgrass greens. You’ll encounter numerous blind shots, so course knowledge is at a premium.

Tanglewood is full of memorable holes. If you can get off to a good start on the first hole, you’ll probably have a good round. It’s long – 431 yards – from the White tees, with a blind tee shot and a semi-blind approach shot. Other than that, it’s a breeze!

Number 4 is an interesting par 4. It’s only 324 yards but requires a tee shot from an elevated tee box, over a deep valley with a pond at the bottom to another left to right sloping fairway. It’s about a 200-yard carry from the tee to the top of the hill. Success off the tee will leave a short chip shot into a shallow green.

Number 6 is Tanglewood’s signature hole and rightfully so. At 494 yards, it’s a 3-shot par 5 for just about everyone. If I were naming holes, this one would be called “Layup,” because it’s all about the second shot. There’s a lake that sits about 140 yards in front of the green and forces the majority of players to hit a good layup shot which will leave anywhere from 130 – 150 yards into an elevated green that slopes back to front.

Number 8 is a good risk/reward par 4 that plays 287 yards from the White tees. The green isn’t visible from the tees and those large trees you see directly ahead of you are in the middle of the fairway. Anything hit off the tee that goes past the 150-yard markers will make it difficult to get your approach shot up and over the trees. The other option is to go past them but hitting a driver is a big risk.

Number 10 is a short par 4 (269 yards) is a risk/reward hole that begs long ball hitters to go for it off the tee. If there’s any doubt about reaching the green. Hit an iron off the tee. Everything slopes hard left to right, and if you hit it right, pars can be tough to come by! The green slopes back right to front left.

Holes 11, 12, and 13 define Tanglewood. Play these three holes at par or better and you’ll likely post a good score when all is said and done. You’ve probably played here before too! Number 11 is a 396-yard par 4 that is the course’s #1 handicap. It’s a very slight dogleg left, and the green is not the one you see in the distance; it sits below the second hill and behind the pond. A good drive will still leave a blind mid-iron shot into a green fronted by a small pond. The right side provides a bailout area and leaves a slightly uphill chip shot. The green slopes left to right and can make for some interesting putts.

Number 12 is the longest par 3 at Tanglewood and because it plays uphill, it’s slightly longer than the stated yardage of 215. Anything that comes up short is going to leave an uphill pitch shot. The green slopes back to front, so anything over the green can leave a tricky up and down.

I found Number 13 to be the most intimidating tee shot on the course. Off the tee, there appears to be little, if any, landing area. The fairway slopes dramatically left to right. If you’re a longball hitter, consider hitting your tee shot left and playing down the adjacent fairway. It’s not traditional but it worked for me! Find the fairway off the tee and you’ll need to play your layup shot to the left, again, to compensate for the sloping fairway. That will leave a short, slightly downhill chip shot into a large green that slopes modestly from back to front. Miss the green on your approach. Hard to believe it’s handicapped #7.

Number 18 is a fun finishing hole and a good chance to get a stroke back on the last hole. It’s an uphill dogleg left that plays 278 yards from the White tees, over a pond. A good drive will leave a short pitch into a small green and a chance to at birdie with a good chip shot.

Tanglewood taught me how to deal with blind shots, especially approaches into the green. What I discovered is that when in doubt, hit less club. There isn’t a lot of water to deal with and most of the “trouble is on the peripheries and behind the greens. Coming up short isn’t a bad thing; you’ll keep the same ball in play. I’m sure I would feel differently if I played the course regularly.

Tanglewood is centrally located and within two hours of three major metropolitan cities: Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and Nashville. They offer tremendous stay and play packages with lodging overlooking the #10 fairway and either hotel-style or condo accommodations. Packages start at $220 for a hotel-style room and include 3 days of unlimited golf with a cart and 2 nights stay. Condos start at $250. Tanglewood offers all guests a $10 breakfast buffet as well as buffet-style meal plans that feed groups for $10 per night. Small appetizers are available in the full-liquor bar.

Tanglewood also offers some incredible membership rates. For example, you can play 7 days a week with a golf cart for $1400/year. If you average 10 rounds a month for 9 months, that’s a little over $15.00/round. For more information, visit their website at www.golftanglewood.com.

WYNTK:
Many of us remember the original 300 series drivers from TaylorMade in 2000 that set the standard at the time for performance and the new 300 Mini targets those looking for a high MOI, low spin driver they can also from the fairway. At 307cc the new driver is not just an overgrown 3-wood, which typically are around 180cc, but a dual-purpose club…off the tee and off-the-deck.

The titanium face uses TaylorMade’s familiar Twist Face which adds loft to the toe area to counteract act hooks and decreases loft in the heel to straighten out slices. Behind the face is a deep, wide sole slot to help improve ball speeds particularly when impact is low on the face.

To aid shots from the fairway the center of gravity is low in the head and the sole is made of a 54g steel plate in a V-shape to smooth the passage of the head through the turf.

“It’s been 20 years since we last made a metalwood this size. It was only natural to call it the 300 Mini Driver to acknowledge what the 300 Series meant to our brand and the game,” said Tomo Bystedt, Product Creation, Metalwoods. “We blended the throwback look with modern carbon, titanium and steel construction to produce a club the speaks to TaylorMade loyalists while delivering distance from the tee and the fairway.”
