WYNTK:
The previous driver model from Ben Hogan Golf was the GS53 and since its introduction in May 2019 the reception it received might be described as a tepid even though at $300 (later $325) it was $100 to $200 less than many competitive drivers. The new GS53 Max is meant to remedy that for this rejuvenated club company begun by golf legend Ben Hogan in 1953.

To begin with the GS53 Max has a bigger head, 460cc versus 445cc, and a 22 percent larger face which, with a larger sweet spot, helps to hit the ball more squarely more often.

The GS53 Max clubhead retains the Speed Slot of the previous model, a cutout area of the sole towards the toe that allows the toe to close more quickly, and real aid for mid to high handicap players.

The use of a carbon composite crown and tungsten rear sole weight allowed Ben Hogan engineers to move the center of gravity lower in the head and slightly further back helping even players with moderate swing speeds achieve a high ball launch. To improve forgiveness, they also were able to reposition more weight towards the outside of the head increasing impact stability and resistance to twisting.

According to CEO Scott White, “Our R&D mission for the GS53 MAX was to keep the Center of Mass as low and as far rearward as possible, which is very different when compared to the original GS53 driver which is much higher and more forward. As a result, the combination of the lightweight composite crown and tungsten sole weight allow us to position the Center of Mass so that we maximize launch while decreasing the amount of ball spin. This provides a higher ball flight … especially for players who don’t have Tour-caliber clubhead speeds … for increased carry and roll out. “

The adjustable hosel design allows changes of up to two degrees from the base loft, one degree stronger or weaker and lie angle/face angle from square to open or closed.

After years of financial and product uncertainty present owners headed by Scott White opted for a direct to consumer business model that, particularly for the company’s irons and accessories, has been popular with golfers. GS53 Max Orders being booked now have a project shipping date the week of Thanksgiving.

Club Sales Boom and the Show is a No Show

Sales of golf clubs are booming and though one hardly is dependent on the other, health considerations have caused cancellation of the annual PGA Merchandise Show. Both however are driven by effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The social distancing requirements to put in place to reduce the spread of the virus are perfectly matched to playing golf as people looked for “things to do.” In the past six months rounds of golf played have undergone a massive surge with the most recent guesstimate being 30 million more rounds will be played this year than last.

More rounds mean more club sales and this summer saw a burst of pent up demand fueled by those taking up the game for the first time, former players returning to the game and regular golfers playing more.

For the July through September quarter Golf Datatech, the Kissimmee, Fla. company that tracks industry data, reported retail equipment sales in the U.S. was second highest ever for a three-month period at $1.001 billion. The record set second quarter 2008 is only slightly more at $1.013 billion with the previous best third quarter being in 2007 at $852 million.

Opinions vary as to whether this surge in the number of golfers, rounds played, and equipment sales will continue but some in the industry are voicing optimism.

“The story keeps getting better as golf continues to surge coming out of the shutdown, and Q3 equipment sales suggests that 2020 will likely end up positive for the entire year,” said John Krzynowek, Partner, Golf Datatech, LLC. “Year-to-date sales for total equipment are now up 0.2% compared to 2019 and considering the size of the hole created by the shutdown in April and May this recovery has been nothing short of remarkable. While the US economy will not enjoy a ‘V Shaped Recovery’ in 2020, if golf continues on this trajectory we will be there soon.

Of special interest is whether the pandemic initiated switch to purchasing equipment online will continue. During recent months e-commerce experienced strong growth and some analysts are saying Internet transactions will keep expanding.

The decision to cancel the 68th PGA Merchandise Show after a September announcement it would be held as usual was made Oct. 21 by the PGA of America and PGA Exhibitions. The Show held in Orlando, Fla. is the largest annual meeting of the industry with 40,000 in attendance and 1,000 exhibitors spread over 1 million square feet of the Orange County Convention Center.

The announcement pointed out after consulting exhibitors, PGA Professionals and industry groups cancellation of the Show just three months away was made “Prioritizing the health and well-being of the global golf community during the ongoing pandemic.”

Plans are being made to conduct an interactive virtual meeting featuring continuing education programs for PGA Professionals, new product launches, exhibitor showcases and networking events.

PGA Golf Exhibitions Event Vice President Marc Simon commented, “This year’s virtual PGA Show will offer unparalleled online engagement, connecting our industry to drive business and grow the game. Technology has brought us together in amazing new ways during the pandemic, and we plan to capitalize on these innovative solutions to make the PGA Show even better moving forward. Recognizing the increased interest in the game and potential growth in 2021 and beyond, we are excited to return to Orlando in 2022 to combine the best of technology advancements with the invaluable experience of face-to-face connections. Together, we are evolving and have the opportunity to emerge stronger and better connected than ever before.”

Cobra King Tour Irons

The new King Tour players category irons from Cobra Golf are Metal Injection Molded rather than cast or forged as are all other conventional irons.

Stock shaft: KBS $-Taper 120
Stock grip: Lamkin Crossline with Connect
5-iron 26° loft, pitching wedge 45° loft
Available Oct. 30, $1,299 4-iron through pitching wedge

WYNTK:
Last spring Cobra Golf for a first in club manufacturing introduced wedges made by Metal Injection Molding and now they are employing this MIM process for a full set of irons called King Tour. MIM’d heads, even cavity backs such as the King Tours, have the advantage of requiring much less hand grinding and finishing compared to either of the conventional manufacturing methods, casting or forging. The process also gives the King Tours what Cobra describes as an “incredibly soft feel.”

“We’ve used our MIM process over the past two years to deliver softer and more precisely-shaped designs in our wedges,” said Tom Olsavsky, Vice President of R&D for COBRA Golf. “Now, in response to demand from better players and our Tour staffers, seeking the same benefits in a full set of irons, our R&D team delivered the KING TOUR Irons.  These irons are softer than any forged offerings on the market, and like their wedge counterparts, offer better consistency in shaping for more precision shot-making on the course. While soft feel and consistency are important in the short game, optimizing these attributes throughout an entire iron set will give golfers better performance across a wider range of shot selections.”

The MIM process starts with 304 stainless steel metal powder which is heated, injected into a mold and then sintered to 1340°C producing a tight and aligned grain structure leaving only a relatively small amount of hand polishing to create the satin finish. By way of comparison forging of iron heads a requires a lesser temperature, 1200°C, and extensive grinding plus polishing are normal.

Also of note are the internal TPU insert which dampens impact vibration, the tungsten toe weighting to improve off-center hits and the use of Smart grips which automatically provide shot data using the Arccos Golf platform.

WYNTK:
Titleist introduction of the new TSi2 and TSi3 drivers and is placing emphasis on the fact they are not just an update of the previous TS models but make use of a new design with a very interesting titanium alloy for the face. Both TSi models (Titleist Speed impact) are meant to put the company squarely in the premium end of the very competitive performance driver category.

Interestingly with the pandemic-induced increased number of rounds and subsequent increase in the equipment sales the company is following some of the other club companies by raising the prices. The two new models are $50 more than the ones in the Titleist lineup they replace that were introduced in 2018.

The face of both the TSi2 and TSi3 is made from ATI 425, a titanium alloy not used in golf club manufacture until now that was originally developed for aerospace and applications such as ballistic armor and NASA’s Phoenix Mars Lander.

“ATI 425 is an amazing alloy that leads to a lot of performance benefits,” said Dan Stone, Senior Vice President, Titleist Golf Club R&D. “It’s incredibly strong and maintains elongation under high stress. It let us optimize the thickness of the entire face to a degree that was never possible before and generate our highest ball speeds ever at points all over the face – not just heel and toe but also high and low. This is not an easy material to obtain, but the benefits to the golfer are beyond anything we’ve ever seen.”

Head shapes have also been modified and according to Titleist data reduce drag up to 15 percent versus prior generation TS models on the theory that less air resistance will result in higher downswing speed and therefore distance.

“TSi is simply better when it comes to all four fundamentals of driver design – distance, accuracy, looks and sound,” said Josh Talge, Vice President, Titleist Golf Club Marketing. “We continue to make every investment necessary to help players achieve the speed and distance gains they are asking for, without having to make any sacrifices when it comes to performance. ATI 425 is an incredible breakthrough for driver performance, but it’s just one piece of the puzzle. Every aspect of TSi has been optimized to benefit the total package, and it’s the integration of all those parts that drives greater ball speed and an experience at impact that tour players can’t stop talking about.”

X Forged CB Irons from Callaway

X Forged CB Irons from Callaway Golf are a multi-material forged players performance category model with a large cavity back

Fast Facts X Forged CB Irons:
Forged 1025 mild carbon steel body
MIM’d tungsten weighting
True Temper Project X IO (Individually Optimized) steel shafts
Mitsubishi MMT (Metal Mesh Technology) graphite shafts
Golf Pride’s Z Grip – firm feel
At retail Oct. 29, $200 each steel or graphite shafts

WYNTK:
Even better players often appreciate some added forgiveness from their irons and the new X Forged CBs provide that along with a high level of consistency from the cavity back design and MIM’d tungsten weighting.

The idea behind the making a multi-material head is the ability to precisely locate the center of gravity based on the iron loft which gives the control for hitting various shots with the proper trajectory. MIM’d stands for Metal Injection Molded which combines air-filled urethane microspheres and tungsten shaped to improve impact sound and dampen vibration. The microspheres surround a tungsten weight allowing lower placement of the center of gravity in the longer clubs and a higher placement in the scoring clubs.

The head shaping features a topline, offset and blade length typical of players irons as well as the feel derived from the mild carbon steel forging.

It is worth pointing out the shaft choices are top of the line as is the firm feeling stock Z Grip.

Callaway’s Apex MB Irons

Callaway Golf updates the two-year-old Apex irons with the Apex MB, a classic players category forged blade muscleback iron.

Fast Facts Apex MB
Traditional compact muscleback blade
Thin topline beveled sole
Rear weight
Callaway’s 20V design grooves
Chrome finish
Available October 29
$185 each steel shafts, $200 each graphite shafts
$1,285 for a 7-piece set steel, $1,400 for a 7-piece set graphite

WYNTK:
There is a lot that can be said for having good looking irons in the bag and the better the player the more important the look at address becomes. The new Apex MBs from Callaway Golf certainly past the looks test.

Weighting in irons is a critical performance factor which in large part translates into the location of the head’s center of gravity and a big reason why the average golfer does better with a cavity back model. Apex MBs have a weight in the rear of the head that Callaway says solves the problem in these blades allowing them “to precisely dial in swing weights without sacrificing CG location.”

Look for their staff players on Tour to be playing these soon.

Blackjack Putter by PXG

PXG has announced the initial offering in the Battle Ready putter series, the Blackjack mallet, which the company says offers a high degree of forgiveness.

Fast Facts PXG Blackjack putter
Mallet head milled aluminum head
Two tungsten and two titanium sole weights
Three shaft bend options
Crosshatch variable depth face grooves
Order online or custom built by appointment
$395

WYNTK:
Parsons Xtreme Golf (PXG) has brought to market the first of their new Battle Ready Collection of putters, the Blackjack, which is a top of the line milled mallet head model of aluminum with four interchangeable weights allowing customized to fit the user’s requirements.

Based on the hosel chosen: double bend (half shaft offset), heel shafted (half shaft offset) or plumber’s neck (full shaft offset), the standard head weight varies form 360 grams to 380 grams with a minimum of 330 grams and a maximum of 420 grams. The center of gravity is towards the rear and the weighting scheme provides a high resistance to twisting at impact.

The face grooves are a pyramid pattern of variable depth to give a similar roll wherever impact is across the width.

“From MOI and CG location to balance and stability, we’ve optimized absolutely everything on our new Blackjack Putter,” PXG Founder & CEO Bob Parsons said in the press announcement. “Since putts account for roughly 40 percent of shots taken, why not put the odds in your favor with PXG’s Blackjack Putter?”

A weight kit with eight weight and wrench is included.

Southern Trace Country Club – Destined To Be Louisiana’s Top Country Club

Southern Trace Country Club in Shreveport is a club on the rise and their goal is to become the best country club value in the state of Louisiana. What happened this past July signified the beginning of this transformation.

Southern Trace Country Club in Shreveport, Louisiana opened in 1988. Since 2000 ClubCorp had owned and managed the property. On July 1st, Southern Trace’s members purchased the club’s assets from ClubCorp. It took the entire membership base of about 800 including golf, tennis, and social members to buy into the plan and accept the changes, and once that happened, the changes began to happen.

Southern Trace Country Club turned over course management operations to Troon through 2022, For my money, Troon is the best golf course management company in the country.  Members of Southern Trace Country Club are also Troon Privé Club members and receive exclusive access to extraordinary golf and lifestyle benefits throughout the world. As a Full Golf Member of Southern Trace, you’ll enjoy access to Troon Privé courses around the country as well as access to their amenities. You’ll also be able to experience over 150 Troon Golf resort and daily fee locations at preferred rates, as well as Cliff Drysdale Tennis. Troon Privé club members receive discounts with companies such as Avis Rental Cars, Ship Sticks, and more.

Golf Course Superintendent Graham Kornmeyer was plucked away from the prestigious Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, FL. In his own words, his first order of business was to “try and salvage as much of the course as possible.” It was handed to him in great disrepair. I can personally attest to the fact that the changes have been astounding. Graham is constantly in touch with the members and does daily updates on the Members Only website.

The centerpiece of Southern Trace is the Arthur Hills designed golf course which was voted #1 in the state of Louisiana by Golf Digest on several occasions and for over 30 years has been regarded as the favorite place to play for golfers in Louisiana. Southern Trace offers golfer 5 sets of tees. From the Black (Back) the course spans 7,048 yards with a course rating of 73.9 and a slope of 135. The course can be played as short as 5,026 yards. I found it both enjoyable and challenging from the Blue Tees (6,315/70.2/126). The club has garnered many accolades including hosting the WEB.com Tour’s Southern Open from 1990-2002 as well as multiple State Amateur Championships and the AJGA David Toms Junior Invitational.

This Arthur Hills masterpiece plays through beautiful pine valleys, oak forests, and open meadows. Manicured fairways give way to Champion Bermuda greens that are second to none. Fairway bunkers are strategically placed and catch errant tee shots and approaches and forced carries are easily managed. Several holes offer risk/reward opportunities for better players while less skilled players will have fun and not be totally frustrated.

Southern Trace has several holes that you won’t soon forget. Number 1 is a 465-yard par 5 dogleg right with bunkers on either side at the corner. Longball hitters may be able to fly the bunker on the right, thus cutting the dogleg. Even if you make the corner of the dogleg and you still have a long way home; for most players, it’s going to be a 3-shot hole. Bunkers front both sides of the green so you may have to fly it on.

Looking at the scorecard, the short, 299-yard par 4 3rd hole screams “Grip it and rip it. Take a quick glance to the left and you’ll see a creek that runs down the side of the hole and then wraps around in front of the green. Better put that driver back in the bag! Instead, play a club off the tee that leaves a manageable distance in, hit a good second shot, and make par – or better – that way. Miss your layup shot short and to the right and you may find one of two fairway bunkers over there.

Number 8 is a very pretty par 5, with the creek meandering down the left side. It actually runs all the way back to the tees, but really comes into view – and play – once you get past the trees. The creek empties into the lake which fronts the green and makes up the right side. You’ll need to cross the water at some point during your trek to the green. A good tee shot followed by a good layup will leave a short iron or wedge into the green. It may not be the longest of the par 5 holes, but it sure is fun to play!

The par 3s on the front and back sides are very different. The two par 3s on the front are relatively short at 142 and 138-yards respectively. Both play downhill and almost a club shorter. Number 4 is protected in front and on the left side with water and a bunker back right. The green on the 6th hole is long and narrow with bunkers on either side, so accuracy is at a premium. The par 3s on the backside have a little more teeth to them, Number 13 plays 201 yards and Number 16 plays 165 yards with water on the left and two bunkers in front. Par these four holes and you’re probably going to have a good round.

Number 16 is the best test of golf on the course. This dogleg left par 4 starts from an elevated tee box over a valley to an elevated fairway that slopes right to left. From there, play your approach shot to an elevated green that is large enough to be a 3 club difference from front to back and is guarded by a large bunker on the right side.

Number 18 is a fun par 5 and a fitting way to end a great day on the links at Southern Trace. In addition to the water you see straight ahead of you off the tee, there’s a couple of small ponds to the right that you cannot see from the tee but can easily come into play. They’re a favorite for wading birds and turtles. You’re going to have to play over the water at some point and for most, it’s on the layup. Be wary of the fairway bunkers in the landing area. The green is elevated but a well-played pitch shot can yield a low score.

Before your round, warm up on Southern Trace’s double-sided range where you can hit every club in the bag. There’s a large putting green as well as a chipping green with two bunkers.

Whether you’re looking for an elegant sit-down meal or just want to relax with your favorite libation, stop by Arthur’s Bar and Grill, which overlooks the 1st hole. Arthur’s has an upscale feel with a down-home vibe. There are three extra-large big-screen TVs, perfect for catching the biggest games of the year. There are usually six beers on tap, two of which rotate seasonally, and a fully stocked liquor selection. Dine-in or take it outside on one of two patios and experience the beautiful Shreveport weather. Southern Trace’s Executive Chef is always cooking up new and exciting things with a gourmet menu that will satisfy even the most discriminating of tastes.

Southern Trace offers a wide variety of memberships so you can experience the ultimate Shreveport country club lifestyle your way; there really is something for everyone. Membership is by invitation only so if you’re bent on joining, make friends with a current member!

In addition to a fantastic golf course, Southern Trace helps its members get involved in the club through fitness. They offer a well-equipped fitness room as well as group classes such as Pilates, yoga, cardio kickboxing, and Tae Kwon Do. After an invigorating workout, relax in their resort-style pool, which is sure to be a hit with the entire family. There are two slides for the kids – or the kid in you – and adult beverages and a full menu is available at the snack bar.

If you’re looking for a country club with Southern charm and flair, Southern Trace should be on your list. With all of the good things happening at the club, it is sure to dominate future country club conversations. For membership information, visit them online at www.southerntracecc.com.

SST PURE – Take Your Clubs to the Next Level.

I think it’s safe to say the golfers will do almost anything within moral, ethical, and legal bounds to gain extra yards, especially with the driver. We’re constantly swapping out clubheads, adjusting face angles, changing shafts, whatever it takes. And manufacturers goad us on, promising that their new technology will deliver extra yards. If all of their claims were true, we’d be hitting our drives 400 yards! It’s rarely the arrow, most likely the Indian.

Fear not fellow golfers, there is a proven technology that can help you add distance to your driver and every other club in the bag. It’s called SST PURE and it involves repositioning your golf shafts to minimize bending and twisting. Rotating the shaft into the clubhead with the hard side or stiffest side toward the target cuts down on the total amount of variation.

Despite what you may think – or have been told – golf shafts are neither perfectly straight nor perfectly round. Studies show that the irregularities in the structure of your golf shaft can cause off-line bending and twisting during the golf swing. This can cause an increase in shot dispersion and inconsistent performance from club to club.

The SST PURE process identifies those asymmetries that exist in every golf shaft and locates each shaft’s most stable orientation. What you get is a more consistent performance and a uniform feel from each club. Golfers typically see and feel the difference immediately! It works on any shaft, steel, or graphite, in any flex.

Now for the good news, several studies have shown that PUREing a shaft leads to greater clubhead and ball speeds which leads to, you guessed it: increased distance! In some cases almost a full extra club in distance! Players who PURE their shafts tend to shrink their shot dispersion and hit more accurate shots.

If you’re an obsessive-compulsive person and prefer all of your shaft labels in the same place – usually up or down – consider this therapy. Odds are that because of the way your current shafts are made, the weak side isn’t going to be in the same place on all of them, hence that perfect look will be no more. But your shots will look and feel a lot better.

I read somewhere that almost $2 billion has been won on the PGA TOUR by golfers playing shafts that had their shafts PUREd. The process is quite easy, simply decide which clubs you’d like to have PUREd and ship them to SST PURE. There’s no need to disassemble them, SST PURE will do that for you. Once they’ve taken your club apart they’ll analyze your shaft with the SST PURE machine and rebuild your club to its original specs unless you tell them in the comments section you want something changed. They’ll put a new grip on it and send it back to you. You’ll receive an email from the company showing how each shaft was rotated.

Once a shaft had been PUREd, it will never become unPUREd, unless of course, you snap it in which case it can be used to stake tomatoes. PUREing a shaft usually costs between $30 and $40, depending on location.

A lot of golfers these days are realizing the value of having their golf clubs custom fit. It’s the best way to get the most out of your equipment. Club Champion is one of the top club fitters in the country and has been PUREing clubs for a while. Nick Sherburne, the Founder of Club Champion saw so much value in SST PURE that he bought the company! SST PURE is currently licensed by golf club fitters in about 39 states in the U.S. and 19 other countries including Australia, Bahamas, Canada, England, Germany, Holland, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, Northern Ireland, Scotland, South Korea, and Switzerland. For more information or to begin the pureing process, visit them online at www.sstpure.com

Timberline Golf Club – A Fabulous Golf Course and Golf Entertainment Facility

Timberline Golf Club has been offering golfers of all calibers a challenge since opening its doors in 2002 and now the course has even more to offer. More about that in a minute. The course is not without its share of accolades and has been pegged as one of Alabama’s Top 10 Courses You Can Play by Golf Week Magazine.

Timberline is located near Calera, AL in Shelby County.  The golf course was designed by PGA TOUR professional Jerry Pate who does a great job of blending the golf course with the natural landscape to create an aesthetic experience that inspires and delights every golfer. The routing of the golf course takes advantage of the terrain’s existing vegetation, wetlands, and views allowing players to take in and appreciate the layout’s natural beauty. But it’s the mature hardwood and pine trees throughout that gives the course its name.

Timberline plays to a par of 71 and with four sets of tees, making it an enjoyable course for just about any caliber of golfer. Yardages range from 4,808 to 6,745 yards; a fifth set of tees (Black) have been added to the scorecard to produce a yardage of 6,444 yards using the Blue and White tees.

As you wind your way around the layout, you’ll encounter many changes in elevation and the occasional narrow fairway. Pate has created a shot maker’s course that often requires shot accuracy and placement over length to score well. What Timberline lacks in bunkers it makes up for in mounding with longer grasses in the mounds around the greens. While you can probably skate by with an adequate sand game, a good short game could save you several strokes. For the most part, greens are good sized, well-undulated and roll fast and true. Several have multiple levels and severe slopes.

Timberline takes you on a roller coaster ride, up and down fairways, teeing off from elevated tee boxes and hitting blind shots into elevated greens. This is evident on the 4th hole which is handicapped the hardest on the course. Number 4 plays 404 yards from the Black Tees and starts with a blind tee shot, followed by a long uphill approach shot to a well-undulated green. The hardest course is followed by a good risk/reward opportunity. The 5th hole is a par 4 that plays 267 yards from the White Tees and for many, a reachable green. A well struck drive over the fairway bunker on the right with a slight draw may very well find the putting surface.

According to Superintendent Bill Wilson, tee boxes are overseeded in the winter and aerified in the spring and early fall to ensure the best possible playing conditions. Although the fairways go dormant in the winter, Wilson and his staff utilize all modern golf course management techniques that keep the course in pristine playing condition year round.

What separates this course from others are the par 3 holes; there are 5 of them! At 153 yards, the 2nd hole is the shortest and with a slightly elevated green, it’s definitely not a pushover. Given the position of the bunkers, you’ll have to fly the ball on to the green which has a lot of undulation. The 205-yard 7th hole (Black Tees) plays considerably less thanks to the downhill trajectory. The nasty little pot bunker left of the green can ruin a thus far good round!

The back nine opens up with a long par 3 – 180 yards from the Black Tees. The green is long with a ridge in the middle and well protected by sand. The toughest hole on the back nine is Number 13, a par 3 that plays 191 yards from the Black Tees with trees on either side. The hole starts out from an elevated tee box, downhill into an elevated green that is well protected by sand left and in back. It’s imperative that you’re on the right level of this multi-tiered green if you want to score well. The 16th is the longest par 3 on the course, measuring 207 yards from the Black Tees. Woods on the left claim anything that is pulled and a large pine tree on the right can wreak havoc with your tee shot. The hole plays slightly downhill, however if you come up short of the green, you’ll have an uphill chip shot.  If you can master Timberline’s par 3s, you can score well! They are some of the tougher holes on the course.

Practice makes perfect and Timberline’s new TrackMan Driving Range is the perfect place to practice. Up until this year, the practice area at Timberline was one of the most comprehensive in the area. It featured an expansive hitting area with well-defined target greens, two practice chipping greens, multiple practice bunkers and a putting green. Recently Timberline unveiled their new TrackMan Range and it’s a comprehensive practice facility on steroids! There are two large Trackman monitors that sit about 50 yards behind the hitting area, one on each side and it can accommodate about 24 players at a time. Here’s how it works: Download the TrackMan Range app for either iPhone or Android before you arrive and open it up once you get there. Get your supply of golf balls in the pro shop and find your spot on the range. Hit a few balls, look at the app and select your bay based on the number of balls you’ve hit. Now you’re ready to have some fun! You can practice and track your performance with distinct parameters such as ball speed and carry distance or bring your friends and play entertaining games like Capture The Flag, Hit It, and Bulls Eye.

General Manager Joe Kruse has big plans for the new TrackMan Range. There is plenty of room behind the hitting bays for a number of tables and chairs and will function as a golf entertainment venue which can be rented out for corporate and private events.

For more formal instruction, Timberline is home to the Hank Johnson School of Golf and a member of the Golf Channel Academy network of instructors. Johnson and his team are some of the best instructors in the game, so whether you’re a beginner, weekend golfer, or an experienced tour professional, they can custom-tailor a program to suit your needs. Their students average over 10 strokes improvement every year.

Timberline Golf Club’s pro shop is stocked with many name brands including Ping, Calloway, Titleist, Foot Joy and Under Armour. Stock up on logoed golf polos and hats for both men and women as well as all of the golf accessories you’ll need on the course. Not sure what to get that special golfer in your life? Cherokee Valley Headlines ‘Can’t Miss’ Upstate S.C. Courses

Cherokee Valley No. 18

Cherokee Valley, the premier family and community-focused club north of award-winning Greenville, has been named one of Discover South Carolina’s “Can’t Miss Upstate Golf Courses.”

The popular state tourism website, published by the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism (SCPRT), cited Cherokee Valley’s “thoughtfully sculpted and masterfully designed” P.B. Dye-designed layout, as well as its “top notch golf with stunning mountain vistas.”

“There are so many outstanding golf facilities in this region, and we’re honored to be recognized by such a trusted and respected source as the SCPRT and Discover South Carolina,” says Cherokee Valley owner and director of operations Matt Jennings. “With so many exciting things coming up this fall and next year, we feel like we’re just getting going.”

Cherokee Valley was one of six courses highlighted for their design pedigree, playability and representation of Upstate South Carolina’s diverse topography. The other venues are The Preserve at Verdae (Greenville), Woodfin Ridge (Inman), River Falls (Duncan), Village Greens (Gramling) and The Rock (Pickens).

Earlier this year, the course’s par-3 8th hole was named one of the “Best Par-3 Holes in South Carolina” by Discover South Carolina. It highlighted the hole’s stunning Blue Ridge mountain views, 70-foot drop from tee to greens, and massive putting surface.

Ideally located 30 minutes north of award-winning downtown Greenville and 45 minutes from the craft beer capital of Asheville, N.C. Cherokee Valley is the perfect basecamp for exploring the beauty and adventure of the Upcountry. Onsite cottages are available for multi-day stay-and-plays, and the club recently announced additional golf packages with Greenville’s only AAA Four-Diamond hotel, the Westin Poinsett.

This fall, Cherokee Valley will open its full-service restaurant, Core 450, featuring a contemporary, engaging and casual theme with a diverse menu ranging from small plates and pizza to chef-driven, five course meals. The culinary program is led by executive chef Todd Warden, who studied under James Beard award-winning chef Bob Kinkead.

Core 450 sits atop Cherokee Valley’s new golf shop, which will feature a wide selection of golf apparel, a curated collection of golf equipment, craft beer cooler and flat screen TVs. Golfers can check in, grab refreshments, and choose from one of the club’s new GPS and Bluetooth speaker equipped golf carts or exhilarating Finn Cycles (battery-powered scooters) for their round.

Riverwatch Golf Club – New Ownership is Making Big Improvements

Most people look forward to retirement; they see it as a way to wind down and take it easy. Many retirees like to travel and spend more time with the kids and grandkids. Some take up hobbies and low-impact sports; for many, it’s playing more golf. Some get really involved in the game and take it serious, others simply buy the course.

While it may be a great way to get that preferred tee time on a regular basis, most people would eschew the idea of owning a golf course, especially during their golden years. John Fitzmartin does not fit this narrative. His initial goal was to invest in his neighborhood golf course in an effort to keep up property values in the area. He was a member of the course, enjoyed playing it, and knew it well. To make a long story short, one thing led to another and he became the owner of Riverwatch Golf Club & Resort in Sparta, TN a couple of years ago.

Riverwatch sits perched high above Tennessee’s largest body of water, Center Hill Lake. The course is cut from the natural landscape and the holes tend to follow the contours of the land. The rolling hillsides and picturesque plateaus paint a picture on each hole and do a great job of melding golf and nature. No two holes are alike, many of the holes are tree-lined, with sharp drop-offs if you push your shot beyond the tree line. Dramatic elevation changes, testing doglegs, well-manicured Zoysia fairways, and well-placed bunkers lead to Bentgrass greens. Bunkers have been strategically placed and come into play off the tees and around the green complexes. Many of the bunkers are still a work in progress while the greens are incredible; lush, well-maintained and roll true. Each hole seems to get a little more challenging as you make your way around the course.

Riverwatch offers golfers 5 sets of tees and can be played anywhere from 6,850 – 4,629 yards, so there’s a distance for every level of golfer. The emphasis is on accuracy rather than length. For the most part, this 18-hole championship golf course was designed by PGA TOUR professional Peter Jacobsen and his course architect partner Jim Hardy. The original owners deviated from the course’s original routing: what is currently the 3rd hole was designed to be the first hole and the current design’s first and second holes were added to the layout. When you play the course the integration is seamless; it’s hard to believe the first two holes weren’t part of the original plans. The 3rd hole is one of the tougher holes on the course. It’s an uphill par 5 dogleg right that requires an accurate tee shot and a layup shot that finds the narrow tree-lined fairway. Had this remained the first hole, I think it a lot of golfers would have been extremely challenged right out of the gate and it may have soured them on the rest of their round.

Before your round, head to Riverwatch’s full-length driving range where you can hit every club in the bag into a variety of target greens.  There’s also a short game area and putting green that entices you to work on those often neglected parts of your golf game.

Riverwatch has several memorable holes. The front nine ends with a testing par 3 that plays 183 yards from the gold tees. There’s water and sand left so if you’re going to miss, hit it right. The green sits at an angle and the difference between a front and back pin can be 2 or 3 clubs.

Holes 11 – 15 can make or break your round and includes two or the course’s three toughest holes. Number 11 is a 329-yard, slight dogleg right with a blind tee shot. Hit a good drive down the left side, catch the downslope and you may find your drive on or close to the green. It’s a great chance to put up a low number and get the back nine going early. Number 12 is a 500-yard par 5 with a slight dogleg right. It’s a semi-blind tee shot and anything left is probably gone. You can bail out to the right if need be but if you hit it down the hill on 13, pack a lunch; it’s a long hike back up the hill! Hit a good drive, avoid the bunkers on the right and you can conceivably get home in two. The green is protected by a single pot bunker front left. Par or better is a great score here and gets you ready for what’s next.

Number 13 is Riverwatch’s toughest test. The hole plays 416 yards downhill off the tee and the entire fairway slopes right to left. Play down the right side and it’s pretty much a given that you’ll be playing from the left side of the fairway. Anything hit down the left is pretty much gone. A good drive will leave a mid to short iron uphill over a stone wall to an elevated green protected in front by bunkers on either side. Take a par – or bogie – and run!

Now that you’ve survived 13 it’s on to a 146-yard par 3 that is all carry over a creek with a bunker in the front middle. The green has some good undulation in it. Anything left is likely lost.

Number 15 is a dogleg left, 375-yard par 4 that is the course’s #3 handicap.  The hole starts to turn around the 200-yard mark so unless a draw is in your shot repertoire, you may want to consider something less than driver off the tee. Your approach shot plays downhill to a medium-sized green. Finishing the hole with the same ball you started with goes a long way in posting a good score on this hole.

Your round ends on another scenic Riverwatch hole. Number 18 is a 458-yard par 5 that requires tremendous accuracy off the tee. Hit a good drive down the middle of the fairway off the tee and you could find yourself with the opportunity to get on in two. The green sits at an angle to the fairway and is protected by a large bunker front right.  Par – or better – is a great way to end your round.

John Fitzmartin takes a considerable amount of pride in his golf course and why shouldn’t he. He’s probably the most actively involved course owner I’ve ever met. He’s done just about every job imaginable on the course, from running mowers to overhauling tractor engines to building the beautiful railroad tie steps up to the 3rd green. Did you know a railroad tie weighs 200 pounds? Fitzmartin gives a lot of the credit on Riveratch’s resurgence to Course Superintendent David Phillips. “When I bought the course, many of the greens were shot. The maintenance staff we had in place at the time was not getting the job done. Since bringing David on board, all of the greens are now in pristine condition, hold approach shots and roll true.” The pair are currently overhauling most of the bunkers and have eliminated some that were extremely high maintenance. As you make your way around the course, you’ll see these improvements for yourself. The more you play, the more improvements, you’ll see!

If you haven’t played Riverwatch in a while or had something less than a memorable experience the last time you played it, I suggest you give it another try. Golfers from Nashville to Crossville have found their way back to the club and are amazed at the renovations that have been done. If you’re traveling from farther away, Riverwatch has some amazing accommodations available right off the first tee with spectacular views of the first 2 holes. Choose from three styles of condos: Studio, Deluxe Suite, and the luxurious Grand Suite, a 2 room villa with a walk-in tile shower, a separate soaking tub, leather club chairs, and a leather sleeper sofa. There’s also a 55” 4K Smart TV to watch your favorite game. There’s also a covered patio with a great view of the golf course. Check out their website for some remarkably low rates. www.riverwatchgolfclub.com.

WYNTK:
In recent years Tour Edge has seen strong sales growth due in no small part to the popularity with the average player of their easy to hit Hot Launch brand. In our view the company’s commitment to quality clubs making use of the latest materials and technology for the type of clubs played by the majority golfers is only surpassed by the reasonableness of their pricing. For example, the preceding Hot Launch HL4 series from 2019 included a driver retailing for $200 with performance comparable to competitive drivers at twice the cost.

In addition to the drivers described above there are two entirely new Hot Launch club lines, the E521 and C521, comprised of fairway woods, hybrids, iron-woods and irons.

The E family is targeted for play by those wanting the maximum help in launch, forgiveness and distance while the C series is for those with higher swing speeds who need some features in their club’s design to help their swings but not with the extreme weighting and offset of the Es.

The two lines have a wide selection of standard clubs encompassing 46 right-handed lofts and 20 in left-handed all with a black PVD finish.

“We have designed the new Hot Launch 521 series to offer both sides of game improvement in one colossal launch,” said Tour Edge President and Master Club Designer David Glod. “This is the biggest launch in our 34-year history.”

“What we’ve found is that the Game Improvement market falls into two distinct categories,” said Glod. “One side for players who want extreme ease of use and launch to the maximum degree and those who want the benefits of game improvement clubs, but with classic head shapes.”

Advanced, crystal-clear optics, target Lock capabilities and optional slope functionality (for calculating elevation-adjusted distance) have made ULT-X one of the most popular rangefinders in the world.

The nifty slope calculation feature is an added bonus, incredible, really, considering the price point. And the yellow band around the ULT-X means you can use it in tournaments as long as said band isn’t showing.

More CNCPT Irons from Titleist

Titleist has added to the premium priced CNCPT line two new players-distance category irons, the CP-03 and CP-04, joining the CP-02 blades first seen last year.

Fast Facts CNCPT CP-03 irons:
Muscle back hollow head
Progressive profile
Minimum offset
Tungsten weighting
5-iron 25°, pitching wedge 48°
$500 per club (3-iron through pitching wedge)

Fast Facts CNCPT CP-03 irons:
Midsize hollow muscle back
Moderate offset
5-iron 25°, Pitching wedge 48°
$500 per club (4-iron through pitching wedge)

WYNTK:
The L-shaped face insert of both the new CNCPT models is made from a forged high strength supermetal which allows for a very thin unsupported area of constant thickness to promote higher ball speeds. The tungsten weighting and shaping of the hollow head CP-03 and CP-04 are said by Titleist to provide forgiveness plus stability at impact.

“CNCPT is the dream project for our engineers,” said Marni Ines, Titleist Golf Club R&D’s Director of Irons Development. “We’re on the journey to not only design the ultimate iron – but actually figure out how to make it. We’ve made a huge leap forward with the discovery of this supermetal alloy – the material is so strong and resilient that we’re able to forge iron faces even thinner than we once thought possible. It’s difficult to obtain and extremely challenging to implement into the manufacturing process, but the benefits to the overall construction in terms of ball speed, launch, distance and trajectory are just astounding.”

All CNCPT iron models are available only through a Titleist fitting appointment.
