Bryson, Distance and the USGA

On his way to a six-stroke U.S. Open victory Bryson DeChambeau was not the longest off the tee on the narrow fairwayed, high roughed, penal test a.k.a. Winged Foot Golf Club. Given all the post tournament discussion, heartfelt angst and hand wringing it may be overlooked the young Californian was seventh in distance off the tee, a full eight yards behind leader Dustin Johnson.

DeChambeau’s greens in regulation, 46 of 72, however was one of the real accomplishments in his victory. His booming drives may have gotten all the attention but his iron play and putting were superb all week.

Since last year and making use of the downtime during the pandemic hiatus DeChambeau added 40 pounds of mostly muscle and pumped up his clubhead speed to a level more often seen on the World Long Drive Tour than the PGA Tour. It also gave him the power to hack it out of the really ugly places he hit it in ankle deep or deeper rough.

The key to his first major victory by a wide measure was raw physical strength. He could hit it most anywhere and muscle it out, often on to the green.

Some are saying this is golf at a new level—the future of the game.

But wait our game’s governing body, the United States Golf Association, is not happy. A Distance Insights Report in February said, “This report clearly shows a consistent increase in hitting distance and golf course lengths over the last 100-plus years. These increases have had a profound impact on costs to build, modify and operate golf courses and they have impacted golfers at all levels. We believe this problem will continue unless this cycle is brought to an end. With collaboration from the entire golf community, we have an opportunity to stem this tide and help ensure golf remains sustainable and enjoyable for generations to come.”

The USGA has tacitly acknowledged the problem is not with average golfers but with the stars, the 0.1% who are professionals and elite amateurs. The Association is set on doing something to rein in this game-changing development and DeChambeau is poster child.

Rather than celebrating the athleticism, dedication and skill of the top players the obvious plan is to add more restrictions to golf ball and golf club performance which seems to ignore that DeChambeau’s performance is a result of his new found strength and intense training to increase the speed of his swing.

The clubs and golf balls have not changed.

Frank Thomas, inventor of the graphite shaft and former Technical Director of the USGA puts it succinctly. “Fortunately, the laws of nature are playing an important part in governing the distance the ball will travel, while the athleticism of the elite golfers – about 0.1% of the golfing population– has changed, as it has in all other sports. Unfortunately — for most of us – this has not been as significant a change.”

Put another way, DeChambeau is six feet, one inch tall and weighs 240 lbs. Are other players to be competitive with this new golf now going to “bulk up” adding muscle and speed. Possibility a few but unlikely for most. As an aside, concurrent with DeChambeau going through his physical transformation this writer was bulking up as well…from the comfort of the family room couch without gaining a single yard off the tee.

The pandemic put the “roll back” of equipment performance until next year but the USGA evidentially plans to forge ahead.

In fact, the present CEO Mike Davis has announced his retirement at the end of 2021 and is on record saying before his term of office ends, he will get the ball “rolled back.”

The inevitable has only been postponed.

Athletes in other sports are encouraged to train harder, gain strength and speed but in golf the rules makers say that is wrong.

It is sad and perhaps the ultimate disservice to our game.

Honma Intros TR21X Irons

A new distance iron from Honma Golf, the TR21X model, is targeted at players ranging in skill level from professionals to mid-handicappers.

Fast Facts Honma TR21X Irons:
Blade-like look
Foam filled hollow body
Internal tungsten weight
L-cup face
$188 per club NSPro 95 NEO steel shafts
$212 Sakata VIZARD graphite shafts

WYNTK:
Honma has completed the TR family with the new TR21X irons that have a hollow foam-filled body and built for use by “competitive to mid handicap players.” These are players-distance category irons with very strong lofts—5-iron 23° and 10-iron (pitching wedge) 38°.

Weighting is low in the clubhead thanks for the head configuration and an internal tungsten bar of 42 grams in the long irons, 50 grams in the mid-irons and 73 grams in the short irons. Honma says even with the strong lofts they produce a high launch and a high resistance to twisting or MOI.

“The distance iron category is the fastest growing iron segment and the TR21X makes a bold statement of looks, sound, feel and flight that will bring a lot of confidence to players who put this full set in play,” says Mark Myrhum Director of Global Product. “Golfers can also take advantage of the exceptional long- and mid-iron playability and combine it with Honma’s high-performance TR20P, V or B irons.”

Combining with the previously introduced TR20 (P, V, B) models for a mixed set will attract some players or using one or more of the TR21X long irons as a utility club is also possible.

Announced at the same time were the TR21 FTi BIG-LB Fairway ($329), the TR21 F Fairways (($299) and TR1` H Hybrids ($249) all with Sakata VIZARD graphite shafts as stock.

Volvik XT Soft Golf Balls – Easy to Control and Easy on the Wallet

Volvik has over 40 years of experience manufacturing golf balls and is probably best known for some wild, almost glow-in-the-dark colors The company is dedicated to the production of specialized 3- and 4-piece multi-layer high-performance golf balls for players of every skill set . Their patented SF matte coating led to the development of Vivid, the world’s first matte finish golf ball. Volvik continues to expand its product line with the 2020 introductions of the XT Soft, the next generation of Vivid.  The XT Soft uses a 3-piece VU-X urethane cover with a 336-dimple design. The V-UX urethane cover delivers maximum feel, shot-shaping control and spectacular control around the greens. I had a couple of pros play a round this past week with the new Volvik XT Soft and they were amazed at how well the ball performed. They found it easy to move left to right or right to left and they found the spin around the greens easy to control. As your average, once a week golfer, I found the same to be true; unfortunately, they don’t float!

The Volvik XT Soft golf balls have a compression rating of 70. The dual core transfers power from the more solid inner core to the softer outer layer which reduces excess driver spin, increasing the moment of inertia and centrifugal force, leading to more distance and more roll. XT Soft works best with swing speeds between 75 and 95 mph, and has been optimized for low driver spin, excellent wedge spin, and a mid-high trajectory The ultra-soft Bismuth oversized core promotes speed to more distance. Volvik has also added an alignment tracking system with long triple putting lines for easier alignment.

Players using Volvik golf balls have earned millions of dollars in prize money with multiple victories. At $37.99 a dozen retail, they may help put some money in your pocket as well!

Grooves on all lofts are Callaway’s JAWS grind to help generate spin on all types of shots and on the sand and lob wedge extend across the face.

Justin Thomas Inspired Scotty Cameron Phantom X5.5 putter

Four years ago, Justin Thomas had some ideas for a modified putter which have now resulted in Scotty Cameron making the limited edition Phantom X5.5 mallet.

Fast Facts Scotty Cameron Phantom X5.5 putter:
Solid milled 303 stainless steel head & face
Aluminum sole plate
Full shaft offset, 3.5° loft
Hand welded small slant neck
10-gram changeable sole weights
Pistolero Plus stock grip
At retail Sept. 22, $850

WYNTK:
Titleist’s Scotty Cameron putter division has created a new model tagged the “Inspired by Justin Thomas Phantom X5.5 putter.” It is a limited edition of 2,020 and built to the putter specifications Thomas has used for 12 of his 13 wins on the PGA Tour.

The solid face is milled from 303 stainless steel and extends to cover the two side wings and with the aluminum sole plate, helps to provide higher resistance to twisting and impact stability. Shaft length is a standard 34.5 inches and the heel and toe weights of stainless steel can be switched out if desired to customize the setup.

The slant neck is shorter than usual, and each is welded by hand. Markings include a special “Circle JT” on the face heel and Thomas’ signature designed into the sole.

Builder Scotty Cameron said, “Justin Thomas is one of those unique players who only comes around once or twice in a generation. He first visited the Putter Studio as a young amateur when he played a Newport 2. JT loved that traditional putter look. But even after getting his first tour win with the blade, he started to consider a change. He poked around our putter bag on the Tour Van and was initially drawn to the Futura X5 – the compact mallet shape really suited his eye. After some back-and-forth discussions, I welded him a small slant neck as a prototype setup – and here we are, 12 PGA Tour wins later and still counting with the same putter – including a major championship, two World Golf Championships and a FedEx Championship. Players are always asking me for a welded-neck putter like JT’s. It’s a special setup that deserves this kind of treatment.”

The Legacy – The Nashville Area’s Best Golf Value

Golfers in the Nashville area have a plethora of choices when it comes to playing golf and many of them opt to play at the Legacy in Springfield, TN. The Legacy was designed by PGA Hall of Famer Raymond Floyd and opened in 1996. Golf Advisor has ranked The Legacy the #2 Public Course in Tennessee and one round on the course will validate this rating. And according

From the back tees The Legacy plays 6,776-yards; 5 sets of tees provide suitable yardages so that any level of golfer will have a great time. The Legacy is a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, and the course is committed to protecting the local environment and conserving natural resources. There’s no limit to the wildlife you could see as you make your way around.

Before your round, be sure to hit a few balls on The Legacy’s full-length driving range where you can hit every club in the bag. Stroke a few putts on the practice green and head to the first tee.

When building the course, Floyd took advantage of the existing mature woodlands that are spread throughout the lush, rolling hills, and offer tremendous views of the Tennessee countryside and the surrounding area. Although the length of the course won’t overwhelm most players the narrowness may so be prepared to encounter hazards in many forms. Remember I said this as you are reaching into your bag for another ball. Nevertheless, The Legacy is a fair and challenging golf course. Superintendent and General Manager Chet Frazier’s biggest challenge is battling the weather. He says the members are great and do their best to replace divots and repair ball marks. “That really helps the greens roll as good as they do,” Frazier said.

The Legacy has several memorable holes, beginning with Number 2, a medium length par 4 that plays 359 yards from the Orange Tees and is very narrow. Although the fairway gets narrow the farther down your tree shot travels, most players can still hit driver off the tee. Playing down the left side will take the bunkers out of play on the right and leave the best angle into the green. Push anything right off the tee and the severe drop-off may claim your ball! Consider hitting an extra club into the green as it plays uphill. The green is long and narrow with a deep bunker on the right.

Number 4 is an interesting hole. The hole plays 364 yards from the Orange Tees with bunkers on either side of the fairway in the landing area. Find the fairway of the tee and you’ll still need to fly your approach shot onto a small green that slopes left and is protected by a deep bunker across the front.

The run from Number 9 thru 12 can make or break your round. The front nine ends with a long par 4 that plays 405 yards from the Orange Tees. Your tee shot is through a chute of trees and from the tee, it looks like the landing area is small but trust me, there’s a lot more out there than meets the eye. Avoid the fairway bunker on the right off the tee and you’ll have a long to medium iron into the green. Anything that misses the green right will likely find the bunker while anything left will leave a delicate chip shot from grass mounds.

From there you move to the most difficult hole on the back nine. The 416-yard par 4 10th hole requires an accurate drive off the tee with a decent forced carry. Again, an extra club is advised on your approach shot as it plays longer than you think. Anything short of the green will leave a challenging up and down. Par is a good score here.

If I were naming holes, Number 11 would be called “Right is Death.” Regardless of the tees you play from, the tee shot is blind and accuracy is extremely important. Push your tee shot right and you’ll see what I mean! A good line is the flagstick on the 18th green; once you get past the 150-yard marker, the fairway narrows considerably. Your approach shot plays into a two-tiered green that slopes front to back and is well protected with bunkers.

At 171 yards, the par-3 12th hole plays into a well-undulated green that sits at an angle from the tee. With a back left pin placement, the bunker and false fronted green force you to carry your tee shot onto the green. I would name this hole “Longer Than It Looks,” because I hit the appropriate iron well and came up woefully short!

Your round finishes up with the longest hole on the course. The par 5, 18th hole plays 550 yards from the back tees (a mere 509 from the Orange tees). Your first two shots play uphill and fairway bunkers on both sides of the fairway are strategically placed to catch errant layups. Shots that avoid the bunkers will leave an approach of around 125 yards into a green that slopes back to front and is protected by a deep bunker on the right side. Par or better is a great way to end the round and head to the clubhouse grill for a cool beverage.

After your round, whet your whistle at The Legacy Grill where you can grab either a quick bite or a full meal. The Grill is a comfortable place to relax and relive your round with friends while enjoying spectacular views of the golf course. Satisfy your palette with a variety of hot & cold entrees, quick-to-go sandwiches, snacks, breakfast, and plenty of cold beverages.

If you live in the area and enjoy playing The Legacy, you may want to consider an annual pass. All passes include greens fees, cart fees, range balls, and applicable taxes. Call the pro shop for more information.

The Legacy is a great venue for your next tournament or outing and the staff is committed to making your event a success. They’ll take care of everything from planning to implementation to clean up. Choose from one of their hassle free event packages or let them customize one to meet your specific needs.

The Legacy’s pro shop offers a wide variety of competitively priced golf equipment and logoed apparel. Their professional staff can also help you out with club repair or take advantage of a certified custom fitting when you purchase a set of clubs. You can test your new clubs at The Legacy’s practice area, which features a full length driving range with grass tees and target areas and separate chipping and putting area to practice your short game. In case you need help getting the most out of your new gear, The Legacy’s professional staff is available for both private and group lessons.

I played the course with a couple of local guys, Steve and Randy. They play at The Legacy quite a bit and were extremely helpful when it came to advising me where to hit the ball, especially off the tee. When I asked them their favorite feature of the course they mentioned two things, the value, and the people. Randy said that he plays all over the area and there’s no better course for the money than The Legacy.

You can experience the course for yourself by giving them a call at (615) 384-4653. Tee times can also be booked online at www.golfthelegacy.com.

Fast Facts Soft Feel Golf Balls:
Two-piece ionomer 338 dimple cover

Fast Facts Soft Feel Lady Golf Balls:
Two-piece ionomer 338 dimple cover
58 compression
Gradient firmness core
Color choice of white or Passion Pink
$21.99 per dozen

WYNTK:
Srixon’s share of the golf ball market continues to grow and according to Golf DataTech from January through June in their U.S. ball sales on and off course sales grew by 30%.

A portion of the growth has been due to the Soft Feel models which are in the low-price or value category and now the 12th Soft Feel iteration has been released. The new ball continues to be a two-piece construction with a thin ionomer of 0.063 inches while the Soft Feel Lady cover is an even thinner 0.057 inches.

Thin covers and low compression are part of the formula to help generate spin on scoring shots and the gradient core – softest in the center, firmer at the edges – Srixon says has high rebound properties that produce distance off the driver.

Brian Schielke, Marketing Director at Srixon was quoted in the press release, “This is our 12th generation SOFT FEEL golf ball, putting us at the forefront of the low-compression distance ball category. With this new model, we’re excited to give golfers our longest SOFT FEEL to date, in a ball that maintains the signature feel golfers expect from a SOFT FEEL.”

The Soft Feel Lady, which has a slightly lower compression rating than the Soft Feel, is the 7th generation of the model.

Aquabrush Provides Easy Solution For Cleaning Clubs and Golf Balls

Pitchfix USA, a global market leader in divot tools and other golf products, is now providing golfers with an easy and effective way to clean club heads and golf balls with its AquaBrush spray cleaner.

AquaBrush is a small, portable device with a brush and water reservoir that is used to clean club head grooves and golf balls. Press the button on top of AquaBrush and a spray of water shoots out and on to the clubface or the ball. Just use a towel or cloth to wipe equipment clean.

Clean clubhead grooves are essential for great golf shots. Leftover dirt and grass in club grooves can cause loss of spin and distance because the moisture from the course grass cannot be dispersed. The water spray is ideal for club grooves that contain dried out dirt and other debris. Simply spray the grooves, brush them clean and wipe clean for a perfect hitting surface.

AquaBrush is a critical accessory for every golfer during these Covid-19 times where golf courses have eliminated ball washers and towels to keep your equipment clean and efficient,” said Bart Fokke CEO of Pitchfix.

“With limited options for maintaining equipment on the course, AquaBrush enables golfers to clean their club heads and golf balls in a quick and efficient way. This is a handy device for golfers and a great gift idea for friends and clients,” he added.

AquaBrush, available in four colors, is lightweight and durable. It comes with a disposable brush head which can be replaced for optimal cleaning and it attaches to your bag. AquaBrush can be customized with your or your client’s logo on the cap.
More information about AquaBrush, including available colors, can be found at www.pitchfixusa.com.

Big Bertha REVA Driver

Callaway Golf is urging women to “unlock their inner distance” with the just announced Big Bertha REVA driver.

Fast Facts:
Super game-improvement  driver for women
A.I. designed titanium Flash Face SS21
Jailbreak internal rods tying sole to triaxial carbon crown
High resistance to twisting (MOI)
Draw Bias
10.5° or 12.5° lofts
RCH 40 shaft stock
Lamkin Women’s ST Soft Grip stock
$499.99

WYNTK:
Callaway Golf says, “if you want to hit the ball farther, you have to hit it straighter,” which of course is as true for women as for men. The new Big Bertha REVA driver especially designed for women addresses the problem of hitting it straighter combined with proved features to produce distance as well.

The center of gravity is closer to the face to help create lower spin and the draw bias head has a high MOI, both of which help to hit straighter tee shots because of less side spin.

The product announcement summed up their approach to the Big Bertha REVA saying, “With Big Bertha REVA, we’ve used significant research and testing with women to create optimized lofts, swing weights, shaft lengths, and a forgiving head shape to help you hit it a lot farther. This driver promotes high launch and low spin to take the slice or big miss out of your game. And a straighter ball flight means more distance, so we’ve developed a total ball speed package with our A.I. Designed Flash Face SS21, Super Strength Titanium, and our innovative Jailbreak Technology.”

In addition to the driver the Big Bertha REVA family includes fairway woods ($299.99), hybrids ($249.99) and irons (7-piece graphite $999.99), all focused on providing additional distance for women players.

Apple Valley at Rumbling Bald Reopens with New Champion Bermuda Greens

Apple Valley, Rumbling Bald Resort

The Dan Maples-designed Apple Valley Golf Course at Rumbling Bald, the 36-hole golf resort on stunning Lake Lure, officially reopened on Aug. 24 with new Champion Bermuda greens on all 18 holes.

With the National Weather Service predicting a warm fall season across much of the Eastern U.S., golfers have plenty of time to enjoy prime golf weather on the resort’s two 18-hole layouts, Bald Mountain and Apple Valley.

“With everything that’s happened this year, we feel incredibly fortunate that Apple Valley is reopening ahead of schedule,” says Rumbling Bald General Manager Jeff Geisler. “We now have the entire fall golf season ahead of us with 36 holes available, and we look forward to safely welcoming golfers from around the region.”

Apple Valley in the Fall

The course’s transition from bentgrass to Champion Bermuda began in June, as play was shifted to Bald Mountain. Ample rain and sunshine throughout the summer, coupled with the agronomic expertise of Director of Golf Course Maintenance Matt Lovell, allowed the popular Southern turfgrass to flourish out of the gates and quickly take root.

“Champion Bermuda is naturally heat tolerant, easier to maintain in this climate than bentgrass and has speeds up to two feet faster than other ultradwarf turf cultivars as measured by a stimpmeter,” says Lovell. “Golfers are going to love putting on it and will appreciate the speed and consistency it provides.”

Rumbling Bald has completed several golf-focused enhancements across both courses over the past two years, including tree removal and replanting, upgraded landscape, and new E-Z-GO golf carts with USB ports, complimentary coolers and bottled water.

The resort offers golf packages combining rounds at both courses with 150 sparkling clean vacation rental homes, condos and studios. Ideal for social distancing, they feature golf course and mountain views. Golfers can grab to-go meals from Legends on the Lake, the resort’s casual dining restaurant on Lake Lure. And once Apple Valley reopens, so will Pinnacle Southern Kitchen, serving up comfort food favorites.

To learn more about Rumbling Bald’s golf courses and packages, visit www.rumblingbald.com, or email jdoran@rumblingbald.com. To book packages directly, or to speak with a golf vacation planner, call (828) 694.3072.

A Mountain Golf Retreat

Tucked along scenic Lake Lure and surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, Rumbling Bald is secluded yet eminently accessible from myriad metro areas. Charlotte, Asheville and Raleigh, N.C., Knoxville and Nashville, Tenn. and Greenville and Spartanburg, S.C. are all between one and five hours away. The resort features two contrasting 18-hole layouts: W.B. Lewis-designed Bald Mountain and Dan Maples-designed Apple Valley.

Rumbling Bald’s marquee course, Apple Valley, stretches to nearly 6,800 yards and features expansive views of Bald Mountain and the surrounding Lake Lure area. Maples estimated 75% of shots at Apple Valley are either level or downhill, virtually unheard of for a mountain course. Shimmering mountain lakes adorn 12 holes, but water only occasionally comes into play.

Bald Mountain

Bald Mountain, at 6,300 yards, is renowned for its unique configuration of five par 5s and five par 3s. Movie buffs appreciate the 16th green, the backdrop of a scene from the movie “Dirty Dancing.”  A protégé of golf course architect George Cobb, Lewis is known for his traditional approach to course design. This philosophy is reflected in Bald Mountain’s playability from tee to green.

The resort’s 150 vacation rental homes, condos and studios are ideal for golf groups of various sizes and feature golf course and mountain views. Post round, golfers can relax at Legends on the Lake, casual dining along the shores of Lake Lure, or grab a hearty sandwich and cold drink at Pinnacle Southern Kitchen at the Apple Valley clubhouse.

Rumbling Bald is rich with amenities and activities, including scenic Lake Lure boat tours, boat rentals, tennis, pickleball, a full-service spa and hiking trails. Families enjoy the Trout Stream Pool and Lazy River, winding its way through the outdoor pool area where guests relax under fan-cooled covered seating. It’s the perfect “base camp” for exploring the natural wonders of western North Carolina and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Mizuno ES21 Wedges

Mizuno Golf steps up their wedge game with the new ES21s with a sweet spot located in the center of the face to improve impact consistency.

Fast Facts ES21 Wedges:
Two-piece stainless steel with hollow body
Forged boron infused steel
Center of gravity in center of face
High toe/low heel profile
CNC milled grooves & vertically etched microgrooves
Standard or wide sole option
$199.95

WYNTK:
Mizuno Golf has a reputation for making some of the best irons and wedges available and they have been especially popular among better golfers including Tour players. The new ES21 wedges build on their previous experience with the goal of increasing consistency of spin which, on wedge-length shots, is the secret to scoring.

Most wedges are constructed so the sweet spot closer to the heel than the center which hampers consistent impact so the ES21s are constructed with the sweet spot higher in the head and behind the exact center of the face. Mizuno says this dramatically increases repeatable results shot after shot.

Mizuno’s Director of R&D, David Llewellyn, said in the official announcement, “We’ve taken a very Mizuno type approach to the ES21 by keeping the top line very sleek – despite the technology inside. Our testing showed that there’s a lot of good golfers out there who will be surprised at the gains they could make by having more predictable spin numbers.”

WYNTK:
Last winter when Honma Golf brought the TR20V (players category) and TR20P (players distance category) irons to market the expectation was we would be seeing the blade model made for their tour players and now it’s here in the TR20B.

“It’s important that Honma delivers a purpose-built iron design that both fits and excites players within every skill set. With the TR20B, skilled players who rely on accuracy and true feel now have more than just another boring blade. The TR20B brings inspiration every time you pull it out of your bag or set it on the ground. It’s a thing of beauty as well as top-end performance,” said Honma’s General Manager Chris McGinley.

The TR20B (Tour Response 20 Blade) are good-looking forged muscle backs with both progressive blade length and bounce with the higher lofts have more bounce than the longer lofts. These blades, according to the company are ideal for making blended sets when combined with the TR20V or TR20P filling in the long iron slots.

“The pyramid design on the back of the TR20B honors beautifully-crafted Honma iron designs from the past, both aesthetically and in the way that our Takumi can control the club’s center of gravity by adjusting the height of pyramid shape and, thereby, the amount and location of that section’s mass on the muscleback configuration,” said Mark Myrhum, Director of Global Products.

WYNTK:
For 30 years the Big Bertha brand name from Callaway Golf has struck a positive chord with golfers but the most recent driver using the name was the Great Big Bertha in 2017. Now, extending what has become a franchise marketing tool, Big Bertha is back with the Big Bertha B-21 family which is billed by Callaway as being both easy to hit and very forgiving.

Looking specifically at the B-21 driver the weighting is biased for high launch but with low spin in order to produce the best distance and there is a significant amount of weight placed towards the heel to help straighten out the most common swing error, a left to right slice. Callaway’s engineers used the company’s supercomputer programmed to take advantage of machine learning and artificial intelligence to design the clubface with the goal of retaining high ball speeds over a large area. The Big Bertha B-21 face is backed with the now familiar Jailbreak rods tying the carbon fiber crown to the sole which concentrates energy on the face rather wasting it by allowing the crown to excessively bulge at impact.

The same easy-to-hit philosophy using the supercomputer was employed in the Big Bertha fairway woods, hybrids, and irons. The company also noted this is the first time an A.I.-designed face cup has been used in a Big Bertha iron.
