Old Toccoa Farm: A Links Mountain Golf Club

By definition, a links-style golf course is one that is built on sandy soil along the coastline; there is very little elevation change other than the surrounding sand dunes. These courses are usually susceptible to strong winds, which is why you will find deep bunkers; digging them deep is the only way to keep sand in them. A true links course has little if any trees; in fact, other than tall sea grasses and gorse – a hearty low-growing evergreen plant – there is little vegetation at all!

Mountain golf is the antithesis of links golf, plenty of rolling hills, dramatic elevation changes and trees everywhere. To many golfers, it offers the ultimate golf challenge.

I submit to you a new category of golf course: Links Mountain Golf. The best of both worlds: sandy soils, lots of sand dunes, steep elevation changes and trees, lots of trees. We’ll leave the strong winds up to God!

Old Toccoa Farm in Mineral Bluff, Georgia is the poster child of links mountain golf. Step up to the first tee and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Everything except the uphill trajectory!

Design and construction on what was originally known as the Blue Ridge Golf & River Club (which began in 2005), was led by Dan Proctor and Dave Axland of Bunker Hill Golf with Jack Dredla as the Master Shaper. In 2008, the hopes of completing the Blue Ridge Golf & River Club were lost as that year’s real estate crash claimed yet another victim.  When the project was abandoned in 2009, 17 of the 18-holes were shaped, but only 9-holes were irrigated, and only 7 holes had been sodded.  By the time the project was foreclosed on in 2012, the grounds were overgrown and unrecognizable as a golf course. In 2013, Current Managing Partners, Kevin Hermetz and Peter Knutzen put together an investment team and were able to purchase the property at a fraction of its original value. They Immediately contacted Bunker Hill Golf and asked them if they wanted to return to complete the project.  The response was unanimous – absolutely.   In 2014 Bunker Hill Golf returned to compete the initial 9-holes and the course was opened in September of 2015.

Ask Knutzen or Dredla what they think of the course and they’ll tell you it’s a “minimalist” golf course, except when it came to moving dirt. According to Dredla, he can’t even hazard a guess as to how much earth was moved. We were standing outside the temporary pro shop and he pointed to the ridge at the end of the driving range. The ridge stands about 20’ high behind the range and according to Dredla, it was all that height at one point. They literally dug out the driving range and moved the dirt around the course. In true minimalist fashion, there are no tee signs with diagrams of the hole and the various yardages; that’s what the scorecard and Visage GPS system are for!

Old Toccoa Farm offers golfers 5 sets of tees and can be played anywhere from 6,707 (73.8/149) to 4,525 (67.2/123) yards. No matter your golf competency level, you’ll find a set of tees that will let you thoroughly enjoy the golf course. Old Toccoa Farm has some pretty impressive practice facilities too, including a full-length driving range, chipping area and a putting green and in the spring of 2020, they will open their Family Par-3 Course located inside the driving range!

As you traverse the course at Old Toccoa Farm, you’ll encounter scenic vistas, fields of native grasses, and thick stands of hardwood trees, each adding to the overall aesthetics of the course. The massive bunkers are very rugged looking and remind you of the traditional links style courses with thick grass collars, and tall-wispy grass edges. Advancing the ball from many of the traps can be difficult. Often – as in Scotland – your best (only) play out is either sideways or backwards.

The greens at Old Toccoa Farm are 007 Bentgrass and feature a great deal of undulation. In fact, undulation may be an understatement; hills or mounds may be more suitable. According to Knutzen, they’ve buried their fair share of elephants out here! As far as speed, they typically run between 8 and 9 on the stimpmeter and can be taken up a notch or two for tournaments and special events.

Hole # 2 is very interesting, playing over 400 yards downhill from the back two sets of tees. Accuracy off the tee is a must, finding the fairway is imperative if you want to score well, or at the very least find your ball so you can hit it again. Push anything right towards the fairway bunker and you’ll have a totally blind second shot – albeit downhill – to a green that leaves very little margin for error. A good drive in the fairway can roll a long way and could very well be that 300 yard drive you’ve been dreaming about and put you in a good position for a birdie.

Several fairways – and cart paths for that matter – are reminiscent of a roller coaster and with over 280 feet of elevation change, Old Toccoa Farm rivals the best coasters out there. The shortest hole on the course (Hole # 12, 116 yards) is followed by the longest hole on the course (the par 5 13th hole at 626 yards), which plays downhill and is, believe it or not, reachable in two. Sometimes looking where you’ve been can be a beautiful thing. Case in point: Stand on the green on Hole # 5 and look back at where you’ve just come from. Downhill off the tee, uphill to the green never looked so good!

If you’re looking to get back to nature, you’ve come to the right place. This private, gated community with semi-private golf, consists of over 420 acres and is located just 5 miles from the charming mountain town of Blue Ridge, GA. The nearby Chattahoochee and Cherokee National Forests offer more than 1,000,000 acres of managed wilderness, for hiking, and biking. Old Toccoa Farm also boasts over 4,300 feet of frontage on the clear-flowing Toccoa River, a world-class fishery.  The river also offers plenty of other river activities including, canoeing and kayaking. Currently, there are 3.5 miles of walking trails on property that meander along the Toccoa River and next to small slow-moving creeks. As the community grows, plans call for an expansion of the trail system.

Old Toccoa Farm is open six days a week and closed on Tuesdays. One way to become a member of Old Toccoa Farm is to purchase property; Property owners must become members. Not looking for a new primary or second home or already have a home in the area? You can apply to become a Non-Resident Member but better hurry, ultimately there will be a cap on the number of Non-Resident memberships. Corporate Memberships are also available.

Not sure if Old Toccoa Farm is a place you want to call home? They have a way to help you decide. It’s called a Discovery Visit and gives you the opportunity to explore the community and preview the upcoming plans for the development. You’ll also have the opportunity to play one of the most impressive courses I’ve ever had the privilege of playing. If you’re looking for something more than golf, the friendly and amenable staff can help you arrange water activities and other outdoor pursuits during your visit.

If you enjoy the game of golf and find yourself anywhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains of north Georgia, you owe it to yourself to go and play a round at Old Toccoa Farm and experience links-style golf in the mountains. You can find them online at www.oldtoccoafarm.com.

Bay Pointe Golf Resort & Club– Golf God’s Way!

Bay Pointe Golf Club in Brandon, MS has been family owned and operated since 1992. Brent Belton and his family have over 90 years combined experience in golf. More than that, the Belton’s are a Godly family and use Bay Pointe as a way to bring people of all ages to Christ regardless of where they are in their spiritual walk. There’s a weekly prayer meeting around 6 a.m. on the first Monday of every month, however Brent’s door is always open. The monthly prayer meeting is attended by staff, regular golfers and business people on their way to work. These meetings are open to anyone seeking the Word of Christ. It’s the family’s way of giving back to the community which has embraced them and help them spread the Word.

From the back tees, Bay Pointe plays 6,713 yards with a par of 72. The course has a rating of 73.2 and a slope of 129. Four sets of tees make Bay Pointe a playable and enjoyable course for golfers of all abilities. Over the years, Bay Pointe Golf Club has hosted several professional tournaments such as The Hooters Tour, The T.C. Jordan Tour and the Tour America Pro Tour.

The golf course at Bay Pointe is recognized for being in excellent condition year-round. The natural landscape, majestic timberlands and native wetlands you play through on the lush fairways lead to small greens which require a precision approach shot.  Many of the holes are lined with trees on either side of the fairway, requiring a certain amount of control off the tee. There are only two bunkers on the entire course – one in front of the green on the par 5, 10th hole and on in the front left of the green on 18. However, if you think this course is a pushover because of the lack of sand, you’re sadly mistaken. First of all, the greens are small. On several holes, the greens are guarded by small, man-made ponds that may not be visible from the tee box. What you’ll find is that there is enough trouble in the form of woods that creep in tight near a couple of greens and natural hard pan areas around a few others provide a challenge.

Before your round, get loose and hit a few balls on Bay Pointe’s full-length driving range and stroke a few putts on the practice green. There’s a fully stocked pro shop with plenty of logoed apparel for both men and women; balls, hats, gloves and just about every golf accessory you’ll need to go out and play your best. After you’ve shaken hands with your playing partners and walked off the 18th green, stop by Bay Pointe’s full service restaurant inside the club house. The culinary staff at Bay Pointe create some of the best food in the area including hamburgers, and their daily lunch specials can’t be beat. You don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy the great food at the 19th Hole Grille. They also offer meeting rooms and banquet facilities which are considered to be one of the best banquet spaces in the region. Your guests will enjoy panoramic views of the golf course and your next banquet, wedding reception or special event will be the talk of the town. In speaking with Brent Belton, plans are to grow the food and beverage side and make the restaurant a favorite among locals.

Memorable Holes

Number 3: Par 3, 118 yards. Although short, this can be a tricky little par 3. There’s a tree right if you push it off the tee and water short left if you try and get cute. Play for the middle of the green and hope you don’t spin it too much or you could find the aforementioned water.

Number 7: Par 5, 515 yards. A long par 5 that takes a good strike off the tee just to reach the turn. Left center of the fairway is the best position off the tee. Should you have the chance to go for the green in two, play up the right side and play for a favorable kick. The small green is firm so do your best to keep the ball below the hole. Anything over the green can be trouble and lead to a big number.

Number 10: Par 5, 518 yards. Number 10 features one of two bunkers on the course, and it’s strategically positioned directly in front of the middle of the green. Danger lurks when you try to cut the corner of this dogleg left as O.B is very close to the left side of the fairway. The fairway is narrow tee to green, so there’s a premium on accuracy. You’ll need to take the aerial route to the green over the bunker; find it and par just got a lot tougher.

Number 12: Par 4, 360 yards. One of the few straight fairways on the layout. It’s narrow and keeping it in the fairway can be tricky. You’ll need to play your approach shot over a small pond to a small angular green.

Number 15: Par 5, 515 yards. This is Bay Pointe’s signature par 5 and features water on either side of the green from about 150 yards and in. Most players will layup at the bottom of the large hill and then play their approach uphill to a long green. Take an extra club and be sure of the pin position. There’s a few ways to play this hole, which makes it a lot of fun.

Number 18: Par 4, 370 yards. A dogleg right with out of bounds to the right on the parallel fairway. A good drive that leaves you on the left side of the fairway heading into the green is the preferred spot and leaves an easy approach shot into the green. Just be sure to avoid the course’s second bunker on the left. The green has a lot of subtle undulations and can be tricky to read. Make the putt and end the day on a good note.

Each year, the Belton Scholarship Program assists a deserving young man or woman golfer get a good start on the next chapter of their life: a college education. The program is funded from green fees purchases at the club and has been awarded every May since 2016. To qualify, applicants must have at least a 3.0 or “B” average in school and be an active member of their school’s golf team. They must also submit an essay of no more than 75 words, stating the importance of golf in their lives and why they should be considered for the award.

Bay Pointe Resort & Golf Club has one of the area’s best junior golf program, and in an effort to make the game of golf more accessible and enjoyable for other junior golfers, the Brent Belton Golf Academy places an emphasis on a year round golf development program. Their GOLF Initiative – short for Giving Our Love Freely – was created to help young people grow the game of golf in two areas: through the game of golf itself and by the life lessons that can be learned when the game is played properly. This is done by not only teaching golf, but also learning what kind of influence the love of Christ has on all our lives. The GOLF Initiative is proudly sponsored by Callaway Golf and is open to all Junior golfers 11 years of age and older. The program runs from June – August and offer juniors much more including free lessons, golf, practice time, and more.

Kids Golf 365 is designed for year round fun and game development and focuses on teaching the proper fundamentals of the full swing, short game, rules & etiquette, health and fitness, safety, and beginning concepts of the rules of golf. Bay Pointe’s Team Golf Summer and Fall leagues are 6 week programs that allows kids to practice and compete with others, while playing in a fun format designed to introduce and elevate their golf experience and enhance their social development skills.  Parents can get involved with their kids by either coaching or caddying. Bay Pointe also utilizes the United States Kids Golf (USKG) Tee system. These Green tees offer a scaled down golf course for junior golfers and are designed to promote a quicker round of golf for all to enjoy.

One of the best ways to take full advantage of all that Bay Pointe has to offer is to become a member. Bay Pointe offers a variety of membership packages with a plan to suite every golfer, budget and lifestyle. Their new Unlimited Membership is the most affordable in the Jackson-Metro Area and offers unlimited golf 7 days a week, a cart whenever you need it, range balls, swimming, and a full calendar of golf and social events. Walking memberships are also available and if you pay your membership in full, you’ll receive the 13th month free.

The great golf at Bay Pointe is surpassed only by a special brand of southern hospitality and the God-centeredness you find in the staff. To experience this for yourself, visit and play your next round at Bay Pointe Resort & Golf Club, visit their website at www.baypointegolfresort.com.

Putting Stroke. Straight back or arc?

A great description of how the putter moves through space on an inclined plane. Answering the much debated question of straight back or an arc stroke.

Breakthrough Golf Technology Announces Product Lines for 2020

By popular demand and new for 2020, the putter shaft that changed the category, Stability is now available in a vibrant red! Two years ago, Stability was launched and replaced the 50-year old unengineered and unchanged steel putter shaft and totally turned the putter category upside down.
The concept was simple; steel putter shafts stress during the motion of the stroke, which resulted in the putter face not returning square to the target line. A putter face square at impact is the holy grail of the smooth, pendulum style stroke and steel shafts combined with today’s heavier putters are in direct conflict of achieving this.
Regardless of which Stability you play, the Original or new Tour model, it will deliver your putter face square at impact so putts stay more on line. Stability will improve your putter’s performance regardless of the brand and have the same look, solid feel and weight as traditional steel putter shafts.
Stability is the first and only putter shaft designed to specifically improve putting performance and will help you make more putts with better distance control. In fact, Stability has a 99% satisfaction rate over steel. If you play Stability in your putter, you will make more putts.

Mavrik Irons for 2020 from Callaway

Callaway Golf’s run atop the iron market has lasted for five years and for 2020 they are looking to extend that streak. The big news is for the first-time engineers were able to gain the advantages of artificial intelligence (A.I.) and machine learning used for the top selling 2019 Epic Flash driver and apply it to irons, the new Mavrik irons.

The purchase of a larger supercomputer effectively doubled the capacity and pushed component design to levels conventional engineering cannot approach. This capacity allowed extending the A.I. process to the three new model irons.

Thousands of iterations were done targeting a specific set of performance goals for distance, spin and playability while factoring in dozens of variables. The resulting face configuration was tagged the Flash Face Cup and they went so far as to create different face configurations for each loft. Callaway says this is a breakthrough comparable to what they accomplished with the Epic Flash driver and point out this is the first use of A.I. and machine learning for designing irons.

Faces of the long irons are biased to provide high launch and ball speed, mid-irons speed and consistency of spin while short irons control of spin and trajectory were optimized. An internal tungsten weight helps to increase the rebound of the face therefore offering the potential of more distance. The tungsten is surrounded by urethane in the form of microspheres and besides fixing the weight’s exact location it also serves as an impact dampener, what Callaway calls the Tungsten Energy Core.

Three models will be available Jan. 23, the Mavrik, Mavrik Pro and Mavrik Max offering the choice of True Temper, Project X, and KBS shafts plus Golf Pride grips. Pricing is the same for the Mavrik and Mavrik Max, a 7-piece set is $799 with steel shafts and $899 for graphite. Mavrik Pro is $899 for a 7-piece set and only steel shafts are available.

Callaway Mavrik Drivers

Callaway Golf’s latest line of clubs is called Mavrik and clearly builds on the success of last year’s models especially the Epic Flash drivers. The purchase of a new supercomputer doubled computational capacity and gave them the opportunity to broaden the use of artificial intelligence (A.I.) and machine learning pioneered last year. They were able to apply this sophisticated system across the entire Mavrik family—drivers, fairway woods, hybrids and irons.

Focusing on drivers, the Mavrik predecessor Epic Flash was the bestselling driver in 2019, the first using A.I. and machine learning, and the new more powerful supercomputer gave Callaway engineers an even more powerful tool. Using the supercomputer is really a game changer and provides the ability to do tens of thousands of simulations taking into account a range of variables in a relatively short period of time. This vastly increases the number of potential solutions and is all but impossible by conventional methods.

The Mavrik driver’s Flash Face SS20 (Super Strength) architecture is the result of this process and compared to the Epic Flash has a thinner face over a larger area which required a stronger titanium alloy to withstand the impact with the ball. Callaway chose FS2S titanium which both stronger and lighter gaining a weight savings of 6 grams that they relocated to improve forgiveness and trajectory. Engineers also made use of their proven Jailbreak technology–two internal titanium rods tying the sole to the T2C Triaxial Carbon crown—that restricts flexing of the crown and directs additional energy to the face for more distance.

Artificial intelligence also came into play to tune the acoustics of the Mavrik by reconfiguring the support ribs of the internal structure. The company says this has created “an immensely satisfying sound and feel,” a big part of golfer confidence for any driver.

Three Mavrik driver models, all carrying a price of $499, will be available at retail Jan. 23 with each having a unique supercomputer-designed head shape and face architecture. Callaway also is introducing Mavrik fairway woods ($299) and hybrids ($249) offering many similar design features to compliment the driver.

New Tour Edge Irons

Two new irons have been introduced by Tour Edge Golf, a game-improvement category model EXS 220 and the super game-improvement EXS 220h.

“These two new irons sets take us into the realm of offering next-level distance coupled with extreme forgiveness in both game improvement and super game improvement designs,” said David Glod who is both Tour Edge’s president and Master Club Designer. “We have long been a trail blazer in hollow-body irons. These two gorgeous iron designs encompass every performance benefit this emerging technology provides.”

A set of the EXS 220 model (in a good-looking platinum chrome finish) consists of the long and medium lofts (4 to 7) made with a hollow body construction and a forged maraging steel 450 Cup Face to help playability for average golfers. The higher lofts (8 to GW) are cast 431 stainless steel cavity backs. All have a 19-gram tungsten internal weight that provides a couple of benefits including extreme toe weighting for more forgiveness and a larger sweet spot to help maintain ball speed when impact is not exactly in the center of the face.

The EXS 220h irons are 17-4 steel hollow bodies with a confidence-building brushed black satin finish. The ‘h’ stands for a “hybrid” iron set designed to meet the dual goals of providing less skilled players with the distance and forgiveness of metalwoods while having the feel and control of a progressive offset forged iron. The center of gravity is deep in the head for higher launch, resistance to twisting is enhanced by a wide sole and perimeter weighting while cup face construction gives added ball speed.

SpeedTested Shafts are stock for both the EXS 220 and EXS 220h and after extensive robotic testing matched to the heads for three levels of swing speed.

“This new way of looking at how to pair custom shafts is unique to the industry,” said Glod. “We have invested heavily in R&D and one of the first things we did with our new in-house swing robot was to test at different speeds. This has led us to do a bit of pre-custom shaft fitting for anyone buying EXS 220.”

“Our testing showed that the performance of a shaft at a certain swing speed performed much better than at another speed in almost every speed test we did,” said Glod. “It made perfect sense to us to offer the best performing stock shaft per flex and speed, instead of the traditional approach of assigning one family of shafts to all flexes that perform differently at different speeds.”

Up to 85 mph driver swing speed: KBS TGI Tour Graphite 50g Ladies or 60g A-Flex.
85 to 95 mph driver swing speed: KBS TGI Tour Graphite 70g Regular, 80g Stiff, TrueTemper XP85 85g Regular or TrueTemper Elevate 95 95g Regular

Both new iron models have Tour Edge’s SpiderWeb Variable Face Thickness design on the face’s interior surface that helps to preserve ball speed over a wide area of the face. A TPE polymer inside the clubhead has a gel coating to absorb impact shock and increase face rebound.

Bobby Jones & Rule 18 – Dress Your Best on the Course

Bobby Jones’ Performance XH20 Collection features a timeless stripe jersey polo you’ll enjoy wearing on and off the golf course. The Alberti Block Stripe Jersey Short Sleeve Polo features a moisture management system as well as anti-microbial properties and UPF sun protection. Now you can look your stylish best with the St. Charles Brushed Chino Pants. What sets these pants apart from other chinos hanging in your closet is their exceptionally soft and brushed texture that gives you added comfort. They’re extremely flexible and move with you through your entire golf swing with no pinching or binding. The quarter-top front pockets and button-through welt back pockets are big enough to hold all of your golf necessities. The St. Charles Brushed Chino Pants are available in sizes 30 – 44 and in several colors: Charcoal, Midnight Ink, Khaki, White, Stone and Kapers.

There are button down Oxford dress shirts and there are Bobby Jones button down Oxford dress shirts. What sets this timeless solid oxford cloth shirt apart is the iconic Bobby Jones Player sewn on the placket. Tuck it in and wear it with a tie as a dress shirt or untuck it, undo the top couple of buttons, show off the placket and where it as a sport shirt. This 100% is a versatile classic with its button-down collar, chest pocket and long sleeves. It’s available in sizes S – 3XL and in White or Blue.

When it comes to outerwear and layering, Bobby Jones offers several pieces that can easily become your go-to choices. If you’re going to put a sweater on when the temperature cools down, you might as well look good and with Bobby Jones’ Box Jacquard Button Placket Sweater you can do just that. This garment is crafted from BJ’s 1930 20% baby alpaca, 30% extra-fine lambswool, 50% polyamide blend and the micro box design on the front creates a textural contrast and strikes a chord between modern refinement and lasting menswear. The Box Jacquard Button Placket Sweater has a stand-up collar and a three-button placket that is soft on the inside. It’s available in sizes S – 3XL and in Charcoal or Navy.

Another great cool weather piece from Bobby Jones is the XH20 Crawford Long Sleeve Quarter-Zip Pullover. It’s another layering favorite and the stretch fibers and raglan sleeves let you swing away without pinching or binding. The zippered chest pocket keeps valuables safe and secure. The Crawford Long Sleeve Quarter-Zip Pullover is available in sizes S – 3XL and in 11 vivid colors.

The Liquid Cotton Stretch Long Sleeve Mock Neck Shirt is the perfect layering piece whether your dressing up or dressing down. It’s available in sizes S – 3XL and in Black, White, Summer Navy, Charcoal Heather and Heather Grey.

Every golfer knows who Bobby Jones is, but they may not be familiar with Rule 18. In 1925, while playing in the U.S. Open, Jones called a penalty on himself (Rule 18-2) that ended up costing him the tournament. He was a man of uncompromising principle and unwavering integrity and those same qualities live on in the Rule 18 Collection from Bobby Jones. The designs are a little edgier while still maintaining the same high quality craftsmanship.

Paisley meets plaid in the newest offering from Rule 18 by Bobby Jones in a golf polo that’s is as suitable for work as it is for play. The Tech Hickory Ridge Short Sleeve Polo Shirt features a large scale plaid print laid over an outline of paisley patterns, creating a multi-dimensional design. And you get a classic golf look with the button-down collar and three-button placket with a solid contrast inside. The polyester blended fabric has tremendous moisture wicking properties as well as a UV and anti-microbial finish to keep you dry and smelling fresh. The Tech Hickory Ridge Short Sleeve Polo Shirt is available in sizes S – XXL and in a Charcoal Heather color.

Keep warm on those cool fall mornings with Rule 18’s Luxe Pima Grid quarter-Zip Pullover. It’s another garment from Rule 18 that isn’t limited to just the golf course, you can wear it just about anywhere. The Luxe Pima Grid Quarter-Zip Pullover is available in sizes S – XXL and in Charcoal Heather and Evergreen.

Tour Edge EXS 220 Metalwoods

Following up on the enthusiastic acceptance in the marketplace of last year’s Exotics EXS models a new family under the Exotics brand has been announced by Tour Edge Golf, the Exotics EXS 220 which includes a driver, fairway woods and hybrids. All make use of the companies MAX M.O.I. and Diamond Face technologies.

“We have taken a substantial leap forward in design innovation with the entire EXS 220 line,” said Tour Edge President and Master Club Designer David Glod. “We set an all-time record for Exotics metalwoods sold with the original EXS line and based on the initial reaction to the performance from our partners and tour professionals, we feel we will shatter that sales record with the EXS 220.”

“Our goal is to make anyone who hits these side by side to clubs that cost twice as much to question why they would ever think about spending the extra money,” said Glod. “These clubs are that good. We will have a large amount of EXS 220 in play on the professional tours and we will penetrate bags of the better players across the globe due to the extreme performance benefits of these clubs. Truly, pound for pound, nothing comes close to the EXS 220 metalwoods.”

Diamond Face technology is a pattern of thick and thin diamond shapes, what the company is calling “mini-trampolines,” on the interior of the face. This unique construction increases ball speed with less loss of ball speed on off-center hits and helps to reduce spin for added distance. To produce higher M.O.I. (resistance to twisting at impact) the family has new head shapes with sophisticated repositioning of weight.

Among the significant comments from the company they tell me these are “the most forgiving and stable metals ever produced by Tour Edge.”

Adidas Frostguard Jacket For Men and Women – No More Excuses For Not Playing

adidas is at again; creating golf apparel that is appealing and functional. Their new Frostguard jacket is designed to keep men and women warm when the weather gets cool, while at the same time, keep them in style. In fact, the tagline on the inside of the collar tells it all: One Less Reason To Stay In When The Course Is Calling You Out!

My initial take of the Frostguard jacket was not a good one; I couldn’t fathom a warm, down jacket with knit arms. My thinking was: My body is going to stay toasty warm but my arms are going to freeze. I also had some hesitations about being able to swing the golf club covered in something that appeared to be so bulky.

My doubts were dispelled after playing my first round with the Frostguard jacket. First of all, it’s very lightweight thanks to the quilted duck down insulation in the front and back body with bonded no-stitch seams. Secondly, the knit arms and side panels have a lot of stretch and give you unrestricted motion. They’re also fleece lined to keep the heat in. Frostguard also has a water-repellent finish that keeps you dry in light rain.

The Frostguard jacket has a regular fit that is wider at the body, with a straight silhouette. The jacket is made with recycled polyester to save resources and decrease emissions. The stand-up collar zips all the way to the top for added protection from the elements. There are two front zippered pockets on the outside and two deep inside pockets, a great place to keep your scorecard dry.

Frostguard Jacket is available for both men and women in two colors: Legend Earth and Black. Men also have a choice of Collegiate Navy. Available sizes for women XS – XXL https://www.adidas.com/us/frostguard-insulated-jacket/DZ6408.html  and for men S – XXL. https://www.adidas.com/us/frostguard-insulated-jacket/DX4800.html

Canebrake Country Club – A Club the Whole Family Will Enjoy

Set among the stately trees in Hattiesburg, MS, Canebrake Country Club embraces the traditional Southern landscape and provides its members with championship golf, quality dining, and all of the country club amenities one would expect, all in a relaxed, resort-style setting that is perfect for both individuals and families.

At the heart of Canebrake Club is an 18-hole, par-71 championship golf course that plays 7,003 yards from the back tees, with a course rating of 73.6 and a slope of 137. Five sets of tees let golfers enjoy the course from yardages of 6,553, 6031, 5,716 and 5,140 yards. Canebrake was designed by Jerry Pate Golf Design and is the home course of the William Carey University Golf Team. The Club has hosted events for the Mississippi Golf Association, the Mississippi Women’s Golf Association, and the USGA.

Canebrake is a tale of two nines. The front nine plays like a links-style design with generous landing areas, some wide enough to land an aircraft on! The backside is more of a parkland-style course, winding its way through towering pine trees which form the boundaries on either side of several holes. The course is built adjacent to a 250-acre man-made lake, with a good deal of elevation change that requires golfers to think about each shot.  The Champion Dwarf Bermuda greens roll quick and true. Within each bunker on the course is a round mound of grass which has become the Club’s trademark.

Canebrake has several unique and memorable holes. Although it’s handicapped as the 7th hardest hole on the golf course, Number 1 plays tough and is a great starting hole. The hole stretches out to over 400 yards from the Blue tees and starts off with a blind tee shot uphill, followed by an approach shot that plays slightly downhill into a large, angled green that is well protected by a bunker front right.

Number 11 is a fun par 4 that plays 380 yards from the Blue tees. Carry the ball over the hill off the tee and catch the downslope and you can easily find yourself less than 100 yards from the green. A deep bunker on the left guards the green which has a lot of undulation and is a lot wider than it is deep.

The par 5, 13th hole starts off with a blind tee shot followed by a semi-blind layup shot with fairway bunkers coming into play. The large green is hidden behind a deep trap on the front right and a trap on the left about 50 yards short of the green. A back right pin placement can be tricky and will require a precision approach shot.

Number 18 is a good finishing hole that plays 429 yards from the Blue tees. The tee shot plays slightly uphill with a fairway bunker in play on the left. The approach shot plays downhill to a very large green that is a lot wider than it is deep. Bunkers front both sides of the green as does water on the right, which shouldn’t come into play but will definitely intimidate some players.

If you don’t have time to get in a round, take some time and work on your game at Canebrake’s impressive practice facilities. There’s a dual driving range, where you can hit every club in the bag from either side, chipping greens, two practice bunkers and a separate practice putting green. Canebrake’s Pro Shop carries the latest brands and equipment to keep you up to date on the latest trends and technology; they’ll even fit you for the right set of clubs or repair the ones that didn’t treat you so nice. You can also store your golf bag at the Club, with cleaning, bag tagging and shaft labeling.

Expanding the game through young golfers is a priority at Canebrake and their junior golf program is designed to make learning the game of golf fun and memorable. Students of all ages and skill levels are taught creative and fun methods of instruction in a structured, yet relaxed environment. The Junior Golf experience ranges from playing in tournaments to a more relaxed environment of full and half-day summer camps. Junior clinics are offered from March until October to children ages 5 and up and the Canebrake Junior Golf Academy is held at various times throughout the year and is designed to teach the basics of the game to younger golfers. By testing students quarterly, the experienced staff can make sure each student is properly placed based upon their skill level.

The dining facility is best described as casual dining with a modern flair. You can enjoy a quick hamburger after your round or make a reservation for a sumptuous meal with friends and family during the Club’s evening dining hours. They’re open for both lunch and dinner, with a full cocktail menu and wine list. Tuesday nights are Flying Pasta Nights – not a food fight but rather an opportunity to pick your own ingredients and let the chef blend them together into a fabulous pasta dish. On Sunday mornings there’s a Brunch Buffet from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and many other themed meals throughout the year.

During the warm summer months, Canebrake’s Members can relax and enjoy the Club’s Junior Olympic-size pool. There’s a wade-in entry area for the little ones and a dancing fountain play area to keep the kids entertained. If toning up from the winter hibernation is more your goal, you can get a workout by swimming laps. The pool also hosts many great activities such as “Flick on a Float” Movie Night and themed pool parties just for the adults. At the pool grille located adjacent to the pool you can enjoy a variety of casual food and snacks, cold beverages and hand-spun, old-fashioned milkshakes. The pool opens on Memorial Day and closes on Labor Day.

Health and fitness have become a big part of any country club. Canebrake features a 3,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art fitness center with 26 pieces of cardio and weight training equipment including TechnoGym treadmills, ellipticals and recumbent bicycles, all with LCD monitors wired with cable TV, web apps and vital statistics.

Once you start feeling good it’s time to look good, so head over to Shoots Salon & Spa, located within Canebrake Country Club. Shoots provides guests with a full-service, luxurious spa experience. Services include massage, hair treatments and styling, manicures and pedicures, and more.

You will find that the membership at Canebrake Country Club is made up of families, young professionals and individuals who want to experience everything the country club lifestyle has to offer. Throughout the year the close-knit group of Members join together for special events, holiday parties, golf outings and more. Names like Brett Favre and Jonathan Papelbon grace the membership list.

Canebrake Country Club offers a wide variety of memberships including Full Club Memberships, Junior Memberships, Out-of-Town Memberships, Corporate Memberships, Clubhouse Memberships, Military and College Memberships. Full Memberships are the most popular and include full access and use of all golf swimming, dining, and clubhouse facilities including range balls. Out of Town Memberships are available for prospective members who live more than 50 mile from the Club while Clubhouse Members have access to everything Canebrake offers with limited access to golf.

Canebrake takes good care of the men and women of the military by offering them an affordable membership that includes access to Canebrake’s 18-hole championship golf course, driving range, pool, and dining rooms. A one-year membership is available with no initiation fee and $225 monthly dues. College students can become a member while enrolled in school at a very nominal rate as well. Contact Canebrake’s Membership Director, April Leonard.

Canebrake Country Club is a great place to host your next golf outing, tournament, corporate event or wedding. The elegant clubhouse at Canebrake features a copper bar and an exposed wood-beamed, 40-foot ceiling with panoramic views from the terrace overlooking the 18th green. Many wedding ceremonies are held on the terrace. Canebrake’s talented chef and the culinary team will prepare a special meal designed exclusively for your event, everything from a full-course dinner to a delightful buffet, with full beverage service and enough room for up to 600 guests.

TaylorMade SIM Drivers

TaylorMade Golf’s entry in the ‘metalwood wars’ for 2020 is the SIM model which seems to be a logical progression from the previous M-series that introduced both the Twist Face and resin injection with the new family placing increased emphasis on aerodynamics.

It starts with the name SIM that refers to “shape in motion” and comes from a unique asymmetrical sole with a rail, vane or what TaylorMade calls an Inertia Generator that does not run down the centerline but starts in the center and points towards the toe at the trailing edge. This along with a higher crown of carbon fiber means air flow around the head generates less drag.

Normally when even a carbon fiber crown is made higher and rounder to improve aerodynamics the head’s center of gravity becomes higher also. TMaG got around this in SIM by putting a steel weight in the very end of the sole vane to keep the CG low and towards the trailing edge.

At the SIM announcement Tomo Bystedt, TaylorMade’s Senior Director of Product Creation said, “The history of driver design has been about prioritizing tradeoffs. You could have great launch conditions, but poor forgiveness. You could have great forgiveness, but at the sacrifice of distance. You could have an aerodynamic shape, but with less than optimal launch conditions. But through the use of multi-material technology, we’ve developed a new shape that optimizes performance in all three areas. It’s forgiving, fast and promotes the ideal launch conditions.”

The SIM’s Twist Face, slightly closed at the heel to straighten slices and open at the toe to correct hooks, has resin injected behind it to individually adjust the amount of rebound after testing of each face. There is also a sliding sole weight to adjust left/right tendency and when combined with the adjustable hosel loft (+/- 2°), face angle (+/- 4°) and lie angle (56° to 60°) the SIM can be customized to almost any golfer’s need.

There are also the SIM Max model with added forgiveness weight and higher launch plus the SIM Max D with even more heel weighting to promote a draw for those who tend to come across the ball with and out to in swing path.

The three models have progressive face heights with the SIM Max D having the largest so off-center impacts don’t lose as much ball speed.

Bystedt: “We know that the player who generally purchases a draw-bias driver commonly has the widest area of dispersion across the face. So we wanted to give that golfer the biggest face possible. Using all the data we collected in the development of Twist Face – and learning how big the mis-hit zone is based on handicaps – we really tried to design them for the golfer who’s likely to purchase each of these drivers.”
