No trip to World Golf Village is complete without a visit to The World Golf Hall of Fame. Golf Historian Dr. Tony Parker and his staff do a wonderful job of keeping the exhibits fresh and interesting. The World Golf Hall of Fame keeps visitors engaged with interactive storytelling and exhibitions featuring artifacts, works of art, audio, video and photography that are meaningful and memorable to the history of golf and beyond. You’ll find genuine artifacts that have been sought out by Dr. Parker and donated or are on loan to the museum in a variety of constantly changing exhibits. The journey through the Hall of Fame starts with a history of the game and how different cultures may have had an influence on the origin of golf and ends with a trip through the Member Locker Room. The Member Locker Room features a locker for every inductee into the Hall of Fame and provides some insight into their personal lives and interests outside of the game of golf. Your ticket price includes all-day admission, a round on the 18-hole natural grass putting course and a shot on the Challenge Hole; a 132 –yard island green reminiscent of the 17th at TPC Sawgrass. You can also take in a movie at their IMAX theater. Group pricing is also available. It’s best to allow yourself at least half the day to wander through and take in all the exhibits.

The Slammer & Squire Golf Course is located on the World Golf Village property, just a wedge shot away from the World Golf Hall of Fame. It’s an 18-hole championship course that was designed by Bobby Weed, with considerable input from its namesakes: Sam “The Slammer” Snead and Gene “The Squire” Sarazen.

The course features two distinct nines with generous fairways, contoured greens, and plenty of water hazards. The Slammer and the Squire provides a challenge regardless of which tees you play from or how good you might be. Low handicappers will be challenged by a number of risk/reward opportunities; successful navigation of these holes will yield a low score. High handicappers will be glad to know that most approach shots have bailout areas and the greens are straight forward with not a lot of hidden breaks and subtle undulations. They are quick, running about 11 or 12 on the stimpmeter.  A full length driving range as well as a large practice putting green and short game area to hone your skills are within walking distance of the pro shop. Should you arrive hungry or get so during your round, the Legends Grille is a great place to grab breakfast or lunch. The food is very good as are the portions. You won’t leave hungry.

Number 7 is a 143-yard par 3 that is truly a shotmaker’s delight. The hole is designed after the famous Redan hole; number 15th at North Berwick. The flag can be attacked either by carrying the bunkers straightaway, or better yet, by fading a tee shot. This allows the ball to feed down to the hole. Miss the green and you could very well be staring at a big number. It’s no wonder The Redan is the most copied par 3 in all of golf.

On the par 4, 371-yard finishing hole, the bunkers in the distance provide a good line off the tee. Even with water running down the entire left side, there is room right of the green to bailout if you feel the need. The subtle undulations of the green will make your last putts quite memorable and the view of the Hall of Fame across the water is quite spectacular and definitely camera worthy.

The King and Bear Golf Course is located a few minutes down the road from the rest of the World Golf Village, with shuttles available to get you there. The course is “a collaboration of two friends,” according to Jack Nicklaus. Arnold Palmer and Nicklaus joined together to create a course where each hole exhibits characteristics of both players. For Nicklaus it is the wide fairways and generous landing areas off the tees; for Palmer it’s the fast greens. At the time it was built, King and Bear was the only course in the world that the two had built together.

The King and Bear meanders around pristine lakes and ponds with beautiful loblolly pines and stately oak trees throughout. These trees are spectacular to look at; that is until they impede your shot! The emphasis here is on a part of the game that both men were famous for – driving the golf ball. Regardless of which tees you play, you will be challenged. A good game from the tee boxes goes a long way in shooting a good score here.

The two most memorable holes are 15 and 16, which happen to be Arnie and Jack’s favorites as well. Number 15 is a short par 4 and is probably the most photographed hole on the course. You’ll need to hit an accurate, controlled shot off the tee to avoid the water on the right and tall loblolly pines on the left. A good hybrid or fairway wood off the tee will leave a short pitch into an elevated green protected by two sand bunkers on the left and rocks and water on the right. The green slopes dramatically from back to front. At only 311 yards from the Blue tees, par is a good score here.

The shortest par 4 is followed by the longest par 4, Jack’s favorite. It’s a long dogleg right with tall loblolly pines and water on the left side of the fairway and more trees right. The hole plays 416 yards from the Blue Tees, so regardless of how well you strike your drive, you’re most likely facing a long iron, hybrid or fairway wood into the green. Try to avoid the large pine tree on the left side of the fairway which has been the downfall of many good-looking approach shots.

Last Word: No matter which course you play, make sure you warm up with some complimentary range balls and get in the grove before you hit the first tee. Once on the tee, grab a chilled apple from the wooden bins on the 1st and 10th tees.

Both courses are over seeded during the winter months which makes for superb playing conditions year-round and a caddy service is available at both courses if you would prefer to walk.

Both the Slammer and Squire and King and Bear offer exceptional breakfast and lunch menus as well. The menu is the same at both facilities with a couple of the names changed, but nevertheless, the food is outstanding. For breakfast, the Eggs Benedict is highly recommended. For lunch or after golf, start with the Classic Jumbo Chicken Wings which are very meaty and tossed in a variety of sauces. Then go for the Buffalo Bleu Burger, Caribbean Fish Tacos or the Fish and Chips. Legends and Champions Grille offer several non-traditional clubhouse menu items that will have you coming back. Both clubhouses have several large screen TVs where you can catch up on the latest happenings in the sports world while enjoying happy hour.

There is just so much to do at the World Golf Village; it takes several days to take it all in. A lot of resorts offer golf and dining which is fine but why settle for a half day’s activities when you can have so much more. After all, an early tee time on either the King and Bear or the Slammer and Squire followed by lunch at either the Champions or Legends Grille and an afternoon at the World Golf Hall of Fame could very well be a golfer’s perfect day.

The King & Bear Course at World Golf Village

The King & Bear golf course at The World Golf Village in St. Augustine, FL is, in the words of co-designer Jack Nicklaus, “a collaboration of two friends, and an opportunity to bring a friendship together.” The “King” – Arnold Palmer – and “Bear” Jack Nicklaus, joined together to create a course where each hole exhibits characteristics of both players. For Nicklaus, it’s the wide fairways and generous landing areas off the tees whereas Palmer prefers the fast greens. At the time it was built, King & Bear was the only course in the world that the two had built together.

The King & Bear course offers five sets of tees, creating an enjoyable time for any level of golfer.  From the back (Stone) tees, the course measures 7,279 yards with a course rating of 74.1 and a slope of 138. Most men will get all they can handle from the Blue Tees (6,506/70.8/131), while the Ladies play from the Green Tees to a yardage of 5,119 (69.1/124). It would be fitting to mention at this point that King & Bear has been ranked in the top 100 Women-Friendly Courses by Golf for Women Magazine.

The course meanders around pristine lakes and ponds with beautiful loblolly pines and stately oak trees throughout. These trees are spectacular to look at; that is until they impede your shot! The emphasis here is on a part of the game that both men were famous for – driving the golf ball. Water hazards are plentiful too. During the winter month, King and Bear over seeds their tee boxes, fairways and greens, producing a brilliant green color which provides a stunning contrast to the dormant Bermuda grass. It also makes for some fabulous playing conditions during the winter months. Another nice touch are the free chilled apples on the 1st tee and as you make the turn at the 10th. If you are inclines to walk the course, World Golf Village recently introduced a new caddy service. Check with the pro shop before your round to get more information.

Not far from the clubhouse is a full length driving range with multiple targets, an impressive short game area and a large practice putting green. Many players come to the King & Bear just to use the practice facilities. Range balls are included with your paid greens fee.

Inside the King & Bear clubhouse, you’ll find a full-service pro shop with all the latest logoed gear from top designers. There are men’s and women’s locker rooms with showers and changing facilities, so you can freshen up before heading home. You’ll also find The Champion’s Grille, with food fit for a King – and a Bear! The restaurant is open for breakfast and doesn’t close until 7 pm, so you can grab a bite no matter when you finish. For breakfast, you can’t go wrong with the Eggs Benedict and for lunch their chicken wings are big and meaty, and their burgers hit the spot. Rest assured, you won’t leave hungry. There are also several large screen TVs where you can catch the latest sporting events as well as a daily happy hour.

Memorable Holes: (All Yardage is from the Blue Tees)

Number 1: Par 4, 381 yards. At first glance, #1 gives you the idea that the landing area is very small, but trust me, there’s a lot of room there. Ideally, a tee shot over the water and bunker towards the left center of the fairway leaves a low to mid-iron approach into a well-guarded green. Par is a great way to start.

Number 6: Par 3, 157 yards.  This par three that has it all: trees galore, water and beach bunkers. A pin placement on the right side is best attacked with a fade. Anything long and left may find the back bunker. The green is long and narrow with substantial undulation. There’s a bailout area short left of the green if you’re feeling overwhelmed.

Number 10: Par 4, 375 yards. It’s time to make a choice. A drive down the left side brings water and a coquina shelled waste area into play. The right side is the easier drive but brings a deep, menacing greenside bunker into play on your approach shot; too far right and you’ve got trees to deal with. The fairway slopes dramatically from right to left, so you may not have a choice. Another hole where par is a good score.

Number 15: Par 4, 311 yards. This is Mr. Palmer’s favorite hole on the course and is easily the most photographed. It’s s a short par 4 that requires accuracy off the tee. With large Loblolly pines on the left side and a lake to the right, a long iron, hybrid or fairway wood is all you’ll need off the tee. From there, you’ll most likely have a short or iron or pitch shot over a stunning rock wall that surrounds the peninsular green; odds are that you’ll have to carry all or part of the water. Beware of the deep bunker long and left. Make your par and thank Arnie.

Number 16: Par 4, 416 yards. Jack Nicklaus has a favorite hole here as well. It’s Number 16, a brutally long par 4, dogleg right. The oak trees down the right side keep you honest while the Loblolly pines on the left catch any shot missed that way. One particular Loblolly sits on the left side of the fairway. Regardless of how well you strike your drive, you’ll most likely be facing a long iron, hybrid or fairway wood into the green. An extremely large bunker guards the front right side of the green and catches many shots short of the green.

Last Word: The best way to derive the most pleasure from this course is to play from the tees that best suit your handicap and playing ability. When in doubt, take Jack’s advice and tee it forward. The King & Bear will surely challenge the skilled golfer while providing player-friendly conditions for the novice.

The traits of both designers are readily visible in this layout: coquina shelled waste areas and rock-fronted greens are found throughout the course. There are no outrageously long carry shots from any tee, but there is a certain amount of strategy required if you want to score well. Having an idea of where to hit you tee shot on some of the par 4 holes is something you will remember when you play the course a second time. And, as mentioned earlier, the emphasis here is on driving the ball. A good game from the tee boxes goes a long way in shooting a good score here. Compared to other Nicklaus courses, the greens are friendly, although the subtle breaks you find throughout this layout can spell trouble on the scorecard. To Arnie’s credit, the greens do tend to run fast.  The course is well maintained and the staff is warm, friendly and anxious to help you make the most of your golf experience at The King and Bear.

World Golf Village, The Slammer & Squire and The King & Bear makes for a great weekend of golf, whether it’s a family outing or a mancation. Throw in the World Golf Hall of Fame, where both designers are members, and the IMAX theater and what else can a golfer ask?

Monday After the Players

The PLAYERS championship reiterated some facts about this game and as with many other things in life it is useful to identify these facts so that when they pop up again we don’t act totally surprised. Here they are in no particular order along with what passes for analysis but could just as well be labelled as opinion:

Number #1: Banning of the anchored stroke in 2016 was not as many opined the kiss of death for broomstick and belly putter devotees nor did it provoke millions to leave the game. Webb Simpson used a long putter to win the 2012 United States Open and was one of the prominent players who had to find a new way to putt. Now the method he employs is to brace the putter shaft along his left forearm with his right hand in a so-called claw grip and at The PLAYERS he found a way to get the ball in the hole with over nine strokes gained on the field for the week. At one point two years ago, Simpson had fallen to 177th in putting but has fought back with grit and determination.

Number #2: Even a penal golf course such as the TPC Sawgrass Stadium course becomes manageable—not easy by any stretch of the imagination but manageable–if the wind doesn’t blow and the greens are at least marginally receptive. Simpson won by four after rounds of 66, 63, 68 and a cautious 73. If you need proof, the most talked about 63 over the years probably has been Johnny Miller’s at Oakmont in final round of the 1973 U.S. Open. It is often overlook though that rain the night before plus uncontrolled sprinklers after lightning hit the control box turned Oakmont’s infamously rock-hard greens into the consistency of damp washcloths. Last week the Stadium course was manageable simply because the greens “sort of” held and the wind most of the time was less than 10 mph.

Number #3: The long ball is not a surefire answer to scoring so those who keep beating the drum that the ball goes too far are again missing the point…the object of the game is to get the ball in the hole not how far you can hit it with your driver. Webb Simpson’s distance for the week, an average of 280.6 yards, put him in dead last place in the field. He won because his driving accuracy and putting not to mention a mental discipline were so much better than everyone else…but then you knew that already.

Number #4: Next year The PLAYERS will be played in March when conditions in North Florida will be drastically different. Expect the TPC Sawgrass Stadium course to play longer because it will be softer and the ball won’t run out plus the temperatures will be lower, so the ball won’t fly as far. The largest change though will be in the wind which at that time of year typically is more from the north and stronger, so the players will face a test much closer to what designer Pete Dye envisioned. FYI number 16 plays to the southeast and 17 and 18 to the northwest.

Number #5: Tiger Woods may or may not win another major championship but at times he is playing some scintillating golf which at Sawgrass included a 65 on Saturday to make the cut on the number, 11 shots behind Simpson. Some took his performance as a sign “he’s back.” That would be nice, but The PLAYERS showed Woods has yet to prove he has exorcised all the mental and physical demons that will allow him to be in the hunt for his fifteenth major title. Though he managed ten under par over the weekend he couldn’t play better than middle-of-the-pack golf for the last six holes both days. He has a long way to go for his 15th major.

Country Club of Ocala – A Country Club That Has It All

When potential members are considering a new – or in the case of Florida, another – country club to join, there are several criteria that come into play. Typically, at or near, the top of the list are amenities and dining; price (i.e. initiation fees, monthly dues, etc.) ultimately figures into the equation as well. When taking these features into consideration, you will find that the Country Club of Ocala has it all.

Founded in 1994, the Country Club of Ocala provides its members and their guests a place to gather and share their high-quality lifestyle standards. Members from all walks of life have made the Country Club of Ocala their club of choice and have enjoyed the improvements that Hampton Golf has made since taking over the club in late 2016. I spoke with several members who had nothing but great things to say about Hampton Golf and how they are in the process of taking the club to the next level. Previous management had made renovations to the golf course and left many of their improvements unfinished. Hampton has stepped up to the plate and is seeing things through to completion; as a result, the course and facility are in their best shape in years.

The main clubhouse and banquet center have gone through a complete makeover and the tennis and fitness center are due to be renovated this summer. Tennis plays a big part at the Country Club of Ocala. Tennis enthusiasts will enjoy five clay hydro courts and two hard courts, a well-organized tournament schedule and a constant inter-club play calendar. Whether you are seeking a leisurely game or some intense competition, you are sure to find what you are looking for at the Country Club of Ocala.

The fitness center and pool share the same clubhouse as the tennis center. The fitness center is equipped with lots of cardio equipment and free weights and a staff that will see to it that you get the most out of your workout without hurting yourself. Small group classes like boot camp and yoga are also available to help round out your exercise regimen. A massage therapist is available by appointment.

The centerpiece of the club is the 18-hole championship golf course designed by architect Steve Nugent. This scenic, par 72 layout can play as tough or as easy as you like; it all depends on the tees you choose. Doglegs, well-manicured water hazards and strategically placed bunkers will challenge golfers of all abilities. Sloped fairways and elevation changes add to the challenge. The course favors a well thought out strategy from a straight hitter over a longball hitter although length is a definite advantage on a couple of the par 5 holes. The greens are well-manicured and feature considerable undulation to challenge your putting game. Keep your tee shots in the fairway and your approach shots below the hole and you’re bound to do well.

There are several memorable holes out here, but none more than the closing hole on each nine. Number 9 is a par 4 that plays 405 yards from the White Tees and takes two very well executed shots to reach the green You’ll want to keep the ball right of the tee to avoid the water that runs down the left of the fairway. The water sits well below the raised fairway so, even if you flirt with the left side, you’ll most likely leave yourself a tough approach shot. If you’re playing up the right side, be sure to avoid the pot bunker, which also makes for a difficult 2nd. Your approach shot plays downhill to a large green that is fronted by a big oak tree on the right side and a lake on the left. Anything hit to the right will likely find the sand. The green slopes severely from back to front. No wonder why this is the #1 handicapped hole on the course.

From the White Tees, Number 18 is a short par 5 that plays 468 yards and has a large pond that must be carried to get on the green. The hole plays slightly downhill and has several oaks along the way that hug the fairway. A good drive leaves a great risk/reward opportunity, but you’ll have to carry your shot onto this shallow green. A large bunker on the right side in the landing area in front of the pond keeps you honest and force you to come in from the left side. Number 18 could be an opportunity to write down a low score…or not!

The County Club of Ocala also has an impressive practice facility, with a full-length driving range where you can hit every club in your bag, a separate short game area complete with bunker and a good size putting green. The professional staff is readily available to help you overcome any of your golf game’s shortfalls.

A key component to any private club is the dining and the Country Club of Ocala doesn’t disappoint. Meals are served in one of two dining rooms that overlook the Club’s waterfall and stream. Or you can choose to dine on the canyon style wrap-around porch and enjoy the scenery. If you’re looking for something even more casual, the clubhouse bar offers diners a clear view of the 18th green.

Executive Chef Daphne Garcia and her culinary staff have created lunch, dinner and kids’ menus that feature unique and tasty dishes that are sure to please any palate. For example, the lunch menu includes a Salmon Burger and Kentucky Hot Brown Sandwich. The dinner menu features several seafood and vegan entrees, while the kids’ menu offers choices that any child will enjoy. There’s something for everyone! The Golf Club restaurant offers lunch Tuesday through Sunday, and dinner Wednesday through Saturday.

Even though the Country Club of Ocala is a private club – and plans are to keep it that way – it’s very family oriented. Once renovations of the tennis and recreation center are complete, there will be a kid’s area, complete with TVs, games and other activities. Kids also revel in the junior Olympic-size swimming pool, which offers year-round enjoyment for members and their guests.

The Country Club of Ocala offer several membership plans for families, individuals and corporations; tennis and social memberships are also available. Monthly dues are low and initiation fees are currently being waived, so now is a very good time to join. For more information on how to become a member of the exclusive Ocala club, visit their website at www.thecountryclubofocala.com.

The PING G400 Driver – A Lot to Like

The chance to play the latest drivers, irons and putters is a great part of writing about golf equipment and after a lot of years the approaches by the various manufacturers are fairly predictable.

In the case of family-owned PING, they were among the first promoting the idea each golfer should be fit for the proper clubs and this was back at a time when only touring professionals put an emphasis on the right shafts and heads. To me PIING’s essence is expressed by a tag line they use for their game-improvement category G400 irons…game-enjoyment irons.

But turning to drivers, after a professional fitting it was clear the new PING G400 driver was the best match top my swing and specifically the LST version.

The LST is one of four in the G400 driver family and they share features such as the weight-saving crown constructed with titanium ribs and carbon fiber in between so that it looks like a dragonfly’s wing. In the G400 the “dragonfly wing” wraps around the skirt area towards the sole which both shaves a little more weight from the crown to be repositioned in the sole and gives the clubhead an “infinity edge” for a confidence-inspiring look at address. The other distinctive feature of the G400s golfers will notice right away are the “turbulators” or vanes on the crown which redirect air flow on the downswing. These are more prominent than on the G model driver and help reduce aerodynamic drag on the downswing.

Three of the G400 models, the standard, SFT and LST, have 445cc head sizes while the clubhead of the fourth version G400 MAX has 460cc. Head weights are subtly different with the G400 MAX and the standard at 206 grams, the SFT 203 grams and the LST 208 grams. All share PING’s very thin T9S+ forged clubface and the company tells me when added to the improvements in aerodynamics can produce nearly 2 mph more ball speed.

The GMAX 400 is a super game-improvement model and with the larger clubhead has the highest resistance to twisting (MOI) of any of the drivers in the family. In fact, PING says it has the highest MOI of any driver they have ever made. The center of gravity in the standard model is deep in the clubhead which improves accuracy and reduces dispersion. The SFT model (Straight Flight) has heel-biased weighting and a lighter D1 swing weight to help those who slice to more easily square the clubface to straighten out that left to right curvature.

The G400 LST (Low Spin) is for better players and the model played by PGA Tour pros such as Bubba Watson. By moving the internal tungsten weighting closer to the face ball spin has been lowered so trajectory and carry for those with higher swing speeds is improved giving more distance.

Not wanting to bore you with a bunch of numbers, just enough to highlight the differences, Trackman showed the average clubhead speed swinging the G400 was 97.2 mph compared with 96.1 for the previous driver in my bag. The difference in ball speed was exactly 5 mph and the ratio of ball speed to clubhead speed (smash factor) was 1.46 for the G400 and 1.39 for my old driver. Significantly ball spin was between 200 and 300 rpm less depending on the quality of the hit.

Of course, the $64 question is how does this translate into carry distance? The answer is 9.6 yards. In my mind that’s significant. Also, significant after playing with the G400 for a while is the feeling I’m going to hit a good if not great drive every time

Bottom line the entire G400 family from PING are very good and the G400 LST is still in my bag.

San Soleil – Keeping the Sun’s Rays at Bay

Translated from French San Soleil literally means “sunless”. And that’s what these garments are, they don’t let any of the sun’s harmful rays through to your skin. Their 2018 Spring collection of sun protection tops have a number of technological features in common. The most important is true UPF 50 Sun Protection. Most companies that claim a similar UPF factor use a topical “plastic spray” to create their sun protection, which washed out after several washes. SanSoleil’s sun protection never washes out during the life of the garment.

Another important factor, especially on hot summer days, is SanSoleil’s Permanent Cooling feature. The fabric pulls moisture away from the body for quick evaporation to create a cooling effect that provides great comfort. Many of the tops also feature Mesh Venting; inserts that are sewn into the sleeves and create a billowing effect while you walk. This helps you stay cool and comfortable during your round.

One of the nicest features of SanSoleil is that these garments are easy to care for. The SolCool fabric is lightweight and feels like silk, yet it can be washed and dried on a regular cycle.

SanSoleil’s Print Zip Tee SolCool top offers the best of a print and color blocked world. The sleeves, collar and placket are fashioned in the What Knot print and the front and back of the body are available in either Pink or Blue. As with all zipped SanSoleil garments, the Print Zip Tee SolCool top features a Swarovski crystal pull on the zipper. It’s available in sizes XS – XL and retails for $96

Whether you’re a golfer, tennis player, a walker, biker, or runner, San Soleil’s SolTek Crew Neck top provides the ultimate in sun protection. It’s a great garment for sports that require fabrics that move and are lightweight for exertion in the sun’s heat. This crew neck top is available in sizes XS – XL and in several solid colors and prints including Looped Turquoise and Pink and Match Play. Retail price is $88.

Bright, sunny days often start off cool, so if you’re tee time is in the cool of the morning, look no further than the SolCool Full Zip Jacket, designed to keep you warm and protected from the sun, all at the same time. This full-zip garment features a mock neck that zips all the way up and two deep, secure pockets. The SolCool Full Zip Jacket is available in sizes XS – XL and in White, Black, or Pale Aqua. The Ocean Course at Hammock Beach

In 2016, Hurricane Matthew reigned terror up and down the East Coast, from Florida north to the Carolinas. Although the storm never made landfall in Florida, it did leave its calling card along the coast.

During storms like this, nothing is spared. The Ocean Course at Hammock Beach in Palm Coast, FL was one of Matthew’s casualties. The storm surge breached the barrier between the beach and the golf course, pouring thousands of gallons of salt water into the course’s irrigation system and ultimately rendering the course a total loss. Management was faced with a major decision: do they patch up the course and get it playable ASAP or close the course for a significant period of time, and do some major renovations.

After considerable deliberations, a major renovation was planned, and, on October 6th, 2016, the course was closed, with a scheduled reopening set for October 2017, one year after Hurricane Matthew paid a visit. Salamander Hotels and Resorts, the owner of Hammock Beach Resort, contacted Nicklaus Design, the course’s original architect, and plans were set in motion. The renovation was to include re-grassing all fairways, greens and rough with salt water-tolerant Platinum Paspalum grass, reconstructing each tee box, bunker and green complex. Essentially, rebuilding the entire golf course. The renovation and Platinum Paspalum was put to the test several weeks ago when Hurricane Irma paid the area a visit. Remarkably, the course came through with flying colors.

Last week, on November 2nd, The Ocean Course was opened up to local and national media, government officials, as well as a number of members. You can still see some remnants of Matthew’s wrath on the property. The scrub brush that separated the beach and golf course was hit hard, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. According to Director of Golf Brad Hauer, about 10,000 golf balls were blown into the fairway by Matthew’s hurricane force winds, showing that the course is played by all caliber of golfers.

With a lot of the coast scrub brush gone, the course has been opened up and the ocean views are better than ever. Sure, the winds blow a little stronger and are more noticeable, but I think it’s a fair trade off. The Ocean Course is still the same beautiful and challenging course it was before Matthew. Other visual enhancements to the course include bright white Angle-G sand in all the bunkers. This new sand adds even more brilliance.

Water comes into play on at least twelve of the holes; more if you spray it. Several holes require forced caries, but nothing that can’t be handled if you’re playing from the right set of tees. The green complexes are marvelous and, since being redone with Platinum Paspalum grass, the greens are some of the best in the state, if not the country. There is quite a bit undulation in them, but not as radical as what I have seen on other Jack Nicklaus designs. To me, this is one of Nicklaus’ more player-friendly golf courses.

Most Memorable Hole: Number 6, 485 yards (White Tees). This dogleg left features two lakes down the left side separated by a waste bunker. Off the tee, hit the fairway or pay the price – in the way of a cluster of pot bunkers on the right side of the fairway. Unless you’re a long hitter, you’ll want to layup short of the water rather than go for the island green in two. The green has two tiers with the front sitting well below the back. Although this is a short par 5, par is a good score here.

Favorite Par 3: Number 8 or Number 17. Take your pick. These two holes are pretty similar. Number 8 plays 154 yards and Number 17 plays 138 yards; both play toward the Atlantic Ocean, so club selection is crucial. The waste bunker between the tee and green should not come into play; if it does, check with the PGA professionals in the pro shop for a lesson! Number eight’s green is elevated and guarded by three deep bunkers on the right and a nasty little pot bunker on the left. The wind typically blows in from the left, so consider an extra club and aim for the left side of the green. A ridge bisects the green and holding it off the tee can be a challenge. Pars are well earned here.

Number 17 plays 138 yards from the White Tees, back into the teeth of the winds blowing off the Atlantic Ocean. Your tee shot plays over water and a large waste bunker between the water and green. The putting surface is elevated and flanked by bunkers on either side. Ranked the easiest hole on the course, 17 offers a great chance for birdie.

Favorite Par 4: Number 9, 437 yards (White Tees). Even from up here, this is a long hole. Head to the back tees and the hole stretches to 468 yards, a whopping par 4! The hole parallels the Atlantic Coast line and usually plays into the wind. Avoid the fairway bunkers on either side off the tee and your half way there – as long as you hit it about 250 off the tee. Your approach shot will typically be a long iron, hybrid or fairway wood into a long and narrow elevated green that features two distinct tiers. Deep bunkers and grass hollows await any errant approach shots, making a difficult par that much tougher.

Favorite Par 5: Number 10, Par 5, 482 yards (White Tees). A favorite of mine because of the risk/reward, although the reward far outweighs the risk. The green is definitely reachable in two with a good drive down the left side; just avoid the fairway bunker. The two-tiered green is elevated and may require an extra club; it’s also well-guarded with four bunkers. Number 10 offers a great chance to get you back nine off on the right foot.

Last Word:  As Sheila Johnson, Salamander’s Founder and CEO, so eloquently put it at the reopening ceremonies “Today, the Ocean Course reclaims its position as one of the finest golf courses in the country.” And rightfully so; it’s everything I remember and then some. The new Platinum Paspalum grass is a golfer’s delight from the tee box through the green. The course is always impeccably manicured, and the staff is passionate about what they do.

Before your round, be sure to visit the full length driving range where you can hit every club in the bag. Not a bad idea, since you’ll most likely use every one of them at some point during your round. There’s also a large practice green where you can get a feel for what awaits you on the new putting surfaces.

Tee times on the Ocean Course are not available on any of the online discount tee sheets. Basically, there are only ways you can play here: as the guest of a member or as part of one of Hammock Beach’s reasonably priced golf packages. For more information or to book your next golf holiday at Hammock Beach, visit their website at www.hammockbeach.com.

The Golfing Bee – Teaching Kids About the Game of Golf …and Life

First was the Spelling Bee, a contest that dates back to the 1920’s. There’s also the Super Bee, a high-performance muscle car produced by Dodge from 1968 – 1971. Now there’s the Golfin’ Bee, a fictitious little guy named Wendell who, with the help of his friend and mentor George takes up the game of golf.

The Golfing Bee is the creation of author Steve Kranz, who grew up in the Miami, FL area and was enthused with the game of golf at an early age.  In his own words, Steve came up with the idea for the Golfing Bee as he drifted off to sleep one night. It represents something magical yet unconventional when we think about playing golf. It provides readers the opportunity to ponder how a bee can participate in the game while also allowing them to use their imagination. From what I read, there’s so much more to it.

The Golfing Bee is currently a series of three children’s books, aimed at teaching them life lessons while introducing them to the game of golf. In the first book, we learn that Wendell who at this point is unnamed, is different from his siblings. Lesson #1: It’s OK to be different. He’s a curious little fellow and as he’s flying home one day, sees a bunch of people “swinging shiny sticks at white objects.” A simplistic way of looking at the game. He befriends a golfer named George after George hits his ball in the woods and Wendell helps him find it. The two strike up a friendship and at the end of the first novel George has made him a bee-sized set of golf clubs. Lesson #2: Acts of kindness lead to friendships.

In book #2, entitled Wendell Learns a Lesson, we learn that Wendell has the golfing bug (pun intended). His bee-sized clubs are with him all the time; he evens sleeps with them. His first introduction to the game starts with a rainy day, and he learns that golf is a game played regardless of weather conditions. He learns what a “bunker” is and that the ball is always played “where it lies.”  He learns this lesson the hard way, after trying to move George’s buried ball in the bunker. George sees what’s going on and yells at Wendell not to move the ball. Embarrassed, Wendell flies away, only to watch George hole out from a bunker. George apologizes for yelling at Wendell and all is good. Lesson #3: Never be afraid to say you’re sorry.

In the 3rd book, Wendell’s Scoring Adventure, we find Wendell eating a healthy breakfast before brushing his teeth and heading off to the course to meet up with George. Lesson #4: Don’t forget your Wheaties because breakfast is important as is personal hygiene. The rest of the book is devoted to golf, primarily the rules. Although George seems to have a hard time keeping the ball in the fairway, he is careful to count every stroke and teaches Wendell the importance of sportsmanship. Wendell learns that when someone yells “fore”, it’s probably a good idea to duck and what penalty strokes are all about. Lesson #5: Play by the rules and count ALL your strokes.

The Golfing Bee teaches children not only some of the rules of the game of golf, but some simple rules to live by while going through this game we call “life”.  Thanks to the talents of the illustrator of the book Mike Motz, Wendell is also a loveable little guy that children will adore. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Wendell toys and stuffed animals popping up once he gets a little publicity. In fact, if you go to the Golfing Bee website (www.golfingbee.com), there is a 6” plush Wendell toy for sale as well as children’s tee shirts, hats, golf towels and, of course these loveable little books that will teach you about the fun of the game, the integrity of the game, and just how far a simple act of kindness makes us all better people.

10 Rounds with Titleist Tour Soft

Potentially forgotten in all the coverage given the introduction of the AVX, its latest premium golf ball, is the fact Titleist has also brought to market another very good ball this year the Tour Soft.

While some may lament the passing of Tour Soft’s predecessors, the NXT Tour and NXT Tour S, my analysis is the new 2-piece Tour Soft is a combination of both and the description of what Titleist accomplished is very straightforward.

Looking at the golf ball market the company saw “soft-feel” golf balls becoming a factor with the Bridgestone Tour B RXS, the Callaway Chrome Soft and the TaylorMade TP5 gaining traction. With Titleist being the dominant ball brand, their strategy is to not only make the top selling model in the premium price category but to effectively compete in each of the less expensive categories as well. The three competitors soft-feel models listed are all premium priced at $45 per dozen, a notch less than Titleist’s flagship Pro V1 and Pro V1x (plus now the AVX) selling for $48. The old NXT Tour and NXT Tour S were less expensive at $35 per dozen so the new Tour Soft carries the same price.

The goal then was to make the best ball at the mid-$30 price point to perform at the top of that category.

To do this the core of the Tour Soft was made very large, in fact larger in diameter than any core Titleist has ever made. At the same time the core had to have lots of rebound to be able to produce high ball speed and formulated to retain the required soft feel with relatively low spin. The cover, while not the urethane of those models in the premium category, is very thin and made with a blend of four materials so it can provide greenside control. The other part of the story are the dimples.

According to Titleist the pattern is a “spherically-tiled 342 cuboctahedron” design which is beyond my ability to describe so won’t try, but the bottom line is the configuration delivers a penetrating trajectory especially off the driver and long irons.

On the course after more than ten rounds we can say the Tour Soft performs as advertised. Reviews were mid-handicap players and two of them, one a 12-handicap male and the other a 17-handicap lady, said the Tour Soft was significantly longer off the tee. “I know it goes farther than any of the balls I’ve been playing,” according to the male with the lady echoing her approval of the distance from the Tour Soft. Other reviewer comments were almost 100% positive saying the Tour Soft driver distance was in the range of or better than what they were used to from the golf ball they usually played.

My personal experience with the Tour Soft mirrored the distance comments and that it was very consistent on pitches and chip shots. Once gaining familiarity of how it played, distance and trajectory on those two types of shots was easy to achieve. All the rounds were played in Florida where the wind is a constant factor and not one drive or iron shot produced a “balloon ball” even when contact wasn’t exactly pure.

The bottom line is simply if you want to bring to your game the advantages of a low- compression, lower spin, soft-feel ball with good trajectory so it stops on the green the Titleist Tour Soft is one you must put on your list. It is available in both white and optic yellow.

River Greens Golf Club – A Truly Unique Golf Course in Central Florida

The Sebring, Florida area has a number of interesting golf courses in the area, but nothing as unique as River Greens Golf Club.

What makes this course so different is that it wasn’t built by any big-name golf design firm, it was built by its owner, Rodney Davis, although that may not be totally true. Davis and his partner Jeff Harstine own a golf construction company and own/manage another course in the area: Lake Placid Golf Club in Sebring. Their golf construction company has done work for some of the biggest names in golf at some of their best designs including the Tom Fazio-designed Black Diamond Ranch, Pine Barrens at World Woods in the Brooksville, FL area, Greg Norman’s TPC Sugarloaf in Minnesota and the Jack Nicklaus masterpiece, El Dorado in Puerto Rico. They have also built a course for the Crown Prince of Bahrain, in the Middle East as well as the two courses that they manage in the Sebring, FL area.

River Greens Golf Club is located in Avon Park, FL and was originally designed by Jack Kidwell. The course opened in 1969 and can be played from as far back as 6,400 yards or as short as 4,200 yards with a number of choices in between.

The course is in tremendous shape and the TifEagle greens are absolutely amazing. They look great and roll fast and true. Water comes into play on about half the holes. Several of the water hazards are not visible and, unless you know where they are, they can wreak havoc with what you thought was a great shot.

The front nine plays to a par of 35 and boasts several interesting holes. The par 3, 5th hole plays only 150 yards from the back tees but with a road to the left and water to the right of the green. It’s a very narrow tee shot, so accuracy is extremely important. And the wind is usually blowing, either from the left or from the right. Number 7 is a great par 4. It plays 362 yards from the blue tees and is a dogleg right with trees that guard the right side, forcing you to play the entire length. Should you mishit your tee shot over the trees on the right, don’t despair. Unless you find the water that is way to the right, there’s a good chance you’ll find your tee shot in the fairway of the seldom used 9th hole’s secondary hole location. You’ll be left with a long shot over water into the green, but at least you won’t incur a penalty stroke.

Number 8 is a drivable par 4 that plays 260 yards from the back tees. Water on the right catches short, errant drives. Since it’s all carry off the tee, a drop near the water plays substantially uphill. The same road from Number 5 creates an out of bounds on the left and a bunker short right make for an interesting tee/approach shot.

Number 9 is far and away River Greens’ most interesting hole; it’s also the #1 handicap. There are two greens on this hole; one plays 557 yards and the other 442 yards. The reason the shorter green even exists is that the longer, original green sits very low and has a tendency to flood. After hearing numerous times from disgruntled members that the best hole on the course was unplayable, Mr. Davis decided to build a temporary green on higher ground. This new green was so well received by the member that they decided to make it a permanent fixture and give players the option. Number 9 is a true risk/reward tee shot; successful navigation over the water off the tee will give you the opportunity to go for the green in two. Should you be playing to the longer green, you’ll need to cross the lake twice. Getting on the green in two is a lot tougher with this green.
What the back nine lacks in character it makes up for in distance. The par 37 back nine plays almost 400 yards longer than the front, with 3 of the final 4 holes being par 5s that all play more than 500 yards. Water comes into play on all 3 and forms a boundary to the left on number 15. It’s also in play to the right on Number 18 off the tee. The fairway bunker on the left off the tee on 18 sees a lot of action.

In case your hunger gets the best of you after your round, River Greens offers a lot of clubhouse favorites including hot dogs, hamburgers and gilled cheese sandwiches. They also make a mean Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. All are served with your choice of potato chips and a pickle; they also offer daily specials. To quench your thirst, The Plantation Grill offers all of your favorite post-golf libations.

Deer Run Golf Club at Sun ‘N Lake – Sebring’s Most Challenging Course

Sun ‘N Lake in Sebring FL has it all, especially if golf’s your game.

The Sun ‘N Lake of Sebring Improvement District was created by Highlands County in 1974. It occupies about 12 square miles in an area just north of Sebring on Route 27 and has grown from what was wilderness 30 years ago to around 5,000 residents. Although the development was once considered a retirement community, it has evolved into a melting pot of both older adults and younger families. And according to the master plan, there is still plenty of room for growth.

Sun ‘n Lake is home to two championship golf courses: Deer Run and Turtle Run. Deer Run is considered the tougher of the two. The par 72 Deer Run Golf Course at Sun ‘N Lake Golf Club was designed by Don Dyer and opened for play in 1976; in 2003 architect Ron Garl redesigned the course, including the conversion of Number 18 to a par three with an island green.

The Deer Run Course has 6 sets of tees with yardages to fit every level of golfer. From the Black Tees, the course plays 6,919 yards with slope 134 and a course rating of 73.7. Ladies can play a manageable 4,446 yards or challenge themselves at 4,992 yards. Most members play from the White Tees which measure 6,170 yards with a slope of 128 and a course rating of 70. A seventh set of tees adorns the scorecard and combines the White and Gold Tees for a distance of 5,847 yards (68.5/118). Out here, there’s something for every golfer.

At 364 yards, Number 1 is a fairly easy driving hole; hit a decent shot off the tee and none of the trees on either side should come into play. The green is elevated and holds well hit approach shots nicely. Finding the bunker that sits on the front left could prove to be a costly start. Number 2 is a medium length par 3 with another elevated green. Miss the green on either side and you’ll be facing a tough up and down. Number 3 is another straight forward par 4 that plays 385 yards from the White Tees. The water on the right shouldn’t come into play off the tee, however the bunker that guards the left side of the green seems to attract errant approach shots.

Number 4 is a dogleg left par 5 that is reachable in two if you can hit your tee shot past the large oak tree that juts out into the fairway on the left side. If you need to lay up, try and set up so your approach shot is from the right side of the fairway. This takes most of the large bunker on the front left out of play. The 5th is all about accuracy and distance control off the tee. Many will choose to hit less than driver as a large lake comes into play at about 240 yards off the tee. Water and a bunker guard another elevated green.  Favor the right side off the tee. Keeping right seems to be the theme thus far as water guards the left side of the fairway on Number 6 as well. The fairway is fairly narrow, so accuracy is a must if you want to hit an approach shot from the short grass. The green is elevated and smaller than usual and guarded on both sides by bunkers.

The 7th hole is a short par 4 that plays 333 from the White Tees. Keep right to avoid the large waste bunker. The green is long and narrow and guarded on the right by sand.  Number 8 is a straightforward par 3 that plays 183 from the Whites with no trouble to speak of. Number 9 is a long par 5 dogleg right, 554 from the White Tees, over 600 yards from the back. Large oak trees protect the right side with one in particular that keeps you honest right at the bend of the dogleg. Favoring the left side off the tee and on your layup shot will go a long way in scoring well on this hole. The green is one of the smallest on the course and guarded by a small pot bunker on the left.

The back nine starts off with an innocent looking short par 4 that plays 316 yards from the White Tees. You may need to hit something less than driver to stay short of the pond straight away. Approach shots can be tricky into this small, elevated green. Miss your tee shot wild left and you may be surprised that you still have a shot into the green. Number 11 is a par 5 dogleg left with a large oak tree sitting on the left side of the landing area and sand to the right, so you’ll need to decide to hit short or go over. Getting past the tree and sand gives you a chance to go for the green in two. The green is well protected on either side and for most, risk outweighs reward. Number 12 is a 377-yard par 4 dogleg left that is best played down the right side and takes many of the hazards out of play.

Thirteen is a medium length par 3 at 148 yards with sand guarding the front left of this elevated green. A well struck tee shot can help you quickly make up a shot or two on your partners. Number 14 is one of the prettiest golf holes out here. It’s a long sweeping dogleg to the right with trees dotting both sides of the wide fairway. At only 496 yards from the White Tees, it’s tempting to go for in two, however water and four bunkers guard the green. Best to layup and take your chance with a short pitch shot. Number 15 is a narrow par 4 with trees infringing on the fairway on either side. This hole is all about control. The green is small with a little bit of room on the left to bail out if need be.

That bring us to the make or break part of the course; the last three holes. Number 16 is a dogleg right that plays 348 yards from the white tees and requires you to at least make it to the corner. Favoring the left side takes many of the trees out of play and gives you a good look into the green. Be careful of the water and sand that guard the green. Number 17 is the toughest hole on the inward nine and with good reason. From the White tees it plays 389 yards with a pond in the middle of the fairway. Most golfers can hit driver off the tee and should favor the left side off the tee or risk being blocked out by trees. A good drive is still going to leave a long to medium iron into an elevated green protected on either side by sand.

Number 18 is truly a unique hole to end your round; after all, how many courses end with a par 3? From the white tees, the hole plays 145 yards to an island green. Choose your club wisely, hit a good shot and success can be yours. Or else, you’re just another statistic!

Last Word: The Deer Run Course at Sun ‘N Lake in Sebring FL will challenge golfers of all abilities. For the weekend, casual golfer, there is a lot of room off the tees on many holes. For the skilled golfer, it takes accuracy and precision to hit and hold the elevated greens. Many of them are small and have a good deal of undulation. Finishing the round with an island par 3 is truly a memorable event.

Sun n Lake Golf Club is a proud member of the Citrus Golf Trail, who have done a wonderful job of making the Sebring area a golf vacation destination. Swing Control – Look Your Best, No Matter What!

In case you’re not familiar with the brand, Swing Control is a Canadian company that specializes in women’s golf apparel, specifically bottoms in the form of skorts, capris, pants and shorts. They have a special relationship with San Soleil, another Canadian sportswear company that specializes in women’s tops. Keep following The Golfin’ Guy to learn more on San Soleil in a separate article.

The inspiration for the company came from a love of both golf and fashion. Their skilled team of designers spent years turning “active wear” into “anytime” wear. This is golf wear that can be worn anywhere on anybody and looks as good in the office as it does on the putting green!

Two features set Swing Control’s bottoms apart from the rest of the field. The first is the slimming tummy control waistbands, which are available in two models: Basic and Masters. The major difference between the two is the width; the Basic is 2 ¾” wide, the Masters waistband is 4 ¼” wide. The Masters also adds an extra layer of tummy control the entire way around the waistband. Both are sewn from a polyester/spandex blend fabric with moisture-wicking to keep you cool and dry.

The Masters styles seem to have a little more detail to them. For example, while the legs on the Basic garments will have slits on the legs, the Masters models have eyelets and lacing. The front pockets are cut at a different angle as well.

The second differentiator of this clothing line is the colors and prints, there’s nothing like it available on the market today.  The colors and prints are bright and vivid, without being over-the-top and obnoxious.  Soft Florals and brilliant solids are what their spring collection for 2018 is all about.  Their designs have style and class, something every gal would be happy to wear on the course. No matter the style or pattern you choose, you’ll find them all available in sizes 0 – 16. There’s always a Swing Control logo above the front left pocket.

The Skort:  Now you can have it both ways: sporty and chic. This easy to pull-on design is made from a stretchy fabric that moves with you and won’t pinch or bind. There’s plenty of pockets with two in the front and two back pockets as well. Swing Control’s skorts are made with built-in shorts, giving you freedom of movement, as well as an extra dose of confidence; they’re also lightweight and breathable. Swing Control Skorts are available with both a Basic or Masters waistband for as much tummy control as you need. The Basic Collection is available in 4 solid colors and 1 print while there are 8 solid colors and 7 different prints available in the Masters Collection including a couple of knit skorts. This may very well be the most comfortable skort you ever put on.

The Shorts:  Swing Control’s Shorts feature a 13 ½” inseam, 9 ¼” front rise and a 9” leg opening. These are true Bermuda shorts that fall to just above the knee. The Lycra fabric adds two-way stretch for freedom of movement and comfort and is quick drying; wicking moisture away from your body quickly for quick evaporation. The comfort of these shorts is second to none. These shorts are available in either a Basic or Masters waistband; each in 4 solid colors and 2 prints.

The Ankle: These sporty pants feature a 28” Inseam, 9 ¼” front rise and a 4” leg opening. The polyester/spandex blended fabric is moisture wicking and moves with you as you move through your golf swing. Two front and two back welt pockets provide ample room for all a gal’s on-course essentials. With an attention to detail, this popular garment is a popular length to fit any size body; Swing Control’s Ankle Pants could easily become your favorite “go to” pants. They are available in 3 solid colors and two prints in the Basic Collection and 5 solids and 6 prints in the Masters Collection.

The Crop/Capri: Soft, sleek and stretchy, these pants are just the thing to add some pizzazz and style to your golf wardrobe. They feature a 24” inseam, 9 ¼ front rise and 7” leg opening. The legs are designed to fall mid-calf. The polyester blend fabric has plenty of stretch, breathability and moisture-wicking. Swing Control’s Crop Pants are available in 3 solid colors and 1 print in the Basic Collection and 4 solid colors and 3 prints.

The Slim:  These could very well be the most flattering full length pants you will find. Anywhere. The Slim features a 31” Inseam, 9 ¼ front rise and 4” leg opening. Slim legs, side pockets, and a comfy wraparound tummy control in a great variety of colors and prints; 5 solid colors and one print in the Basic Collection and 4 solids and a print in the Masters. What else could you ask for?
